Hi,

I did something very stupid and let a guy stick his unprotected penis up my ass.  I only allowed him to fuck me for maybe 30 seconds and then stood up.  I've never done that before protected or not.  This was a man about 32 years old who I met via a man to man hookup site and I'm 43.  Yes, stupid I know.  He obviously was really into this and I got the impression regularly sought sex with multiple men and there was even another guy in his house at the time that said he was there the previous night.  He did not come inside me and he was not in me long. 

This happened near the end of April.  This week I had a lot of pain in my left hip joint Monday, then Tuesday I ran a small fever and a fever blister began.  Wednesday rather than my left hip joint hurting it was both of leg's muscles ached greatly and I had a higher temp of at least 101 and I had night sweats and even sweated during the day some both Wednesday and Thursday.   I also had a very sore throat Wednesday and Thursday.  Tuesday is when I first started to get the sore throat and today, Friday, it seems like my sore throat is leaving and I feel much better and seem to have stopped sweating.

3 questions: 
1)  Am I realistically at risk for HIV?
2)  Is the sickness I experienced this week consistent with ARS?
3)  If I need to be tested, then where can I do that confidentially in Indianpaolis, Indiana and how long will it take to receive the result?

Yes, you were at risk in that incident although given what you have described I would say it was a very, very low level of risk. You do need to get tested. Get in touch with any AIDS service organization in Indianapolis and they will be able to direct you to where you can have reliable and anonymous testing. For a final, reliable result you should do the test at 13 weeks after the most recent unprotected incident.

Nothing you are reporting symptomatically is HIV specific. That's no surprise since symptoms are never the way to gauge HIV status. Only an HIV test can tell you that. It would be unlikely for you to be having ARS this long after your incident, which is also encouraging.

For the future you have to remember you are responsible for your own health. You may not be thinking about having anal again right now, but it might happen. You can do it the safer way with anyone regardless of the other person's HIV status. It just means that whoever is the insertive partner must ALWAYS without exception be wearing a latex condom.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I will let you know my test result.  I feel so much better today, that I'm hopeful it was just a random severe virus that got me down this week.  I will definitely be tested to be sure.  I can't believe I was so stupid.

Hey, I got my result back and I an NOT infected!  Thanks for the advice earlier.  I was totally freaking out.  What a coincidence I had flu-like symptoms, but had nothing to do with aids.  It is very important to not overreact, but very difficult not to.
