Credit / Debit Cards
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:52:52 am »
I called my bank the other day about exchanging US Dollars to Peso's.  The lady I was talking to said that she would note in my account that I was going to be in Mexico.  Otherwise, it's likely that my cards would have been disabled or locked or whatever you call it.  It might be a good idea for those going to the AMG to contact their banks about this.

I did that this morning. I didn't when I went to Montreal and had a very difficult time paying for my room or getting money.

I will do the same. It is very important to keep track of your card.  Do not surrender it in restaurants (I do that here) but always keep it in sight.  I plan to only use it at the hotel.  Also, it is best to use debit cards only when you keep the card in your hand the whole time and at a safe ATM location (a bank...not a freestanding machine.)  The banking industry is able to detect fraud pretty quickly...but everything we can do to help can prevent problems.

I plan on using the debit card for cash (ATM's) and credit cards for other purchases.  If I'm not mistaken, there is a 'cash advance' fee for getting cash from an ATM using a credit card.  Plus, using the credit card for most purchases will cut down on the handling of my debit card.  If there's going to be any fraud, I'd rather it be on a credit card.

I think there's just a currency conversion fee tacked on when you use an ATM, not a huge cash advance fee.  That's how it is in Europe or when I've gone to the Caribbean.  It's not much, but yeah you should withdraw more than $20 each time.

What I found in Montreal was that there was an ATM fee for the local ATM, a currency enchange fee from my bank (which was miniscule) and then the non-bank ATM fee charged by my bank, which is up to $2.50 here but was $5.00 per transaction in Montreal (Wells Fargo.) I was very pleased to use ATMs in SF, where there's a Wells Fargo on every corner.

Yeah, that sounds about right -- I knew about the ATM machine fees.  You encounter that when you travel in the US and have to use a bank that isn't yours.  You just need to get used to carrying around larger bits of money, or using a credit/debit card at the point of sale.

It's really not that big of a deal.

I guess I'm the odd one out - we'll be traveling with cash and exchanging money as we need it.  Our debit cards are linked and we're only allowed so much money withdrawn / day.  I don't want to leave Hubby home with 5 kids unable to use his card and vise versa.

Later today, we'll be off....See you in just over 24hours!
