Title: Resistance question
Post by: wtfimpoz on July 01, 2010, 02:47:15 am
As I understand it there are six categories of HIV drugs, with several drugs within each category.  If drug resistance occurs to one drug in a category, does it occur for all drugs within that category?

The answer is no.

But, resistance to one drug in a class sometimes means resistance to additional drugs in that class. Sometimes this is a strong association, eg the mutation which commonly causes complete resistance to Sustiva also causes the same resistance to Viramune (both drugs in the NNRTI class), but in many cases the picture is more complex.

Thanks a lot!  Do I automatically inherit all of the resistances of the guy who infected me?

perhaps

your doc should do a resistance test on diagnosis and/or before starting treatment
