And the hits just keep coming...
« on: April 23, 2008, 12:05:12 pm »
Howdy Peeps---

I guess I am needing some support or advice about now. It just seems like the hits keep coming in my life. Let me tell the story....Back around Easter, I had severe stomach cramps and vomiting. I chalked it up to food poisoning after looking over at WebMd and talking to a nurse here at the hospital. But after the stomach pains were over I noticed that I had two lumps on the side of my stomach. I decided I would mention it to my primary doctor when I saw him which was just on the 14th. He wanted me to get a abdominal cat scan done which I had just got done this past Monday. The results are back...

It seems that I have a legion on my liver, I guess that explains the elevated liver results. I also have a cyst on my left lung. Now in my mind, I am thinking my meds are the culprit. I have been on them since last September. I have made up my mind that I am going to stop them until I find out what's going on. I am waiting to get appointments with two specialists. I am in utter shock because it isn't like I abuse my body. But I am concerned because my mother did pass from cancer even though my primary doctor is telling me NOT to worry, I just can't help but worry. Now I seeing they are going to have to cut on me and this concerns me being poz and diabetic.

I am trying not to think the worse but maybe I should get my will in order.

Queen, please don't stop your meds, it's unlikely they're the culprit so soon after starting. You're a smart cookie, you know you need to sit down and discuss the test results with your doctor before you decide to do anything.

We're here for, you know that.

I agree with Doxie.  I'd definitely NOT immediately draw the conclusion that HIV meds caused this.  This issue could easily pre-date your starting meds and you just weren't aware of it, or be purely coincidental.

At any rate I'm going to be thinking of you lots and lots this week.

Sorry to see you are being hit with more "stuff".  It sucks. But there is time to relax and be good to yourself.  This is what Betty means when she says "day at a time".  See, they aint cutting you today ...and not tomorrow.  So you got time to relax and figure this thing out.  Perhaps there will never be any incision...such a nicer word than CUT.

Your Royal One,

Sorry to hear of this report. Whenever someone I care about is facing a similar situation I always tell them not to jump to conclusions.  Wait and see what the specialists have to say and what additional tests show.  We will all hope for the best.

Thanks Guys. I am waiting to hear back from my ID doc. I am sure he is going to say he doesn't want me to stop  the meds either. Nurse Leah seemed to be concerned for my mental health but I assured her I am not suicidal and I'm not. I am just in shock and wondering how am I going to deal with it all.

M. honey,

I sure hate to hear this report.   Sweetie, you need to lean on your friends, and on us here....we're here for you.   I won't say "don't hit the panic button" because I am like you, I would probably have already mashed it.

I agree with the other folks, I'm not sure stopping your HIV meds is the right thing to do.   Just hang on honey, you are a strong person, and you will get through this 'crisis', or whatever it turns out to be.

love you much,

Alan   :-*

Queen-
I am so sorry all this crap has been thrown at you.  I agree, that you should definately keep taking your meds, you don't want to mess up your numbers.  Talk to all the docs and make the decisions with them .
Stay strong!

Your Majesty,

I just wanted to add my name to the list of people who are concerned about you.  Stopping your meds suddenly doesn't really seem like the best idea to me but it's understandable to want to have something to blame this on.  As everyone has already said take a deep breath and really pause for thought.  Talk with all your doctors to make sure everyone is on the same page.  Remember we are all here thinking about you.

All the best!

Sorry you got that bad news.
It's already been said here, but I'll put in my 2 cents anyway:
Learn about the lesion. Learn about the cyst. Don't stop your meds unless you have some real evidence that meds are the cause.

Hi Queenie -
you don't deserve this - no one does - your "family" supports you  in every way and we are all hoping for you to get better.
Don't blame it on the meds - keep taking them - they are important to the rest of you.

Queen, I'm so sorry to hear about this. (and don't know how I missed it yesterday...)

As so many others have said, please try to not panic and please don't stop your meds! They're unlikely to be the cause. Hopefully this will turn out to be nothing serious - I've got everything crossed for you and will be keeping you in my thoughts.

Thanks Again Everyone. I really do need all of your support. I feel like I am falling apart and I am no long in this world. Not that I want to kill myself but that my body is starting to give out. My emotions are getting the best of me and I have been everything from angry to tears. I hate that shit because I pride myself on being logical and some what emotionless. I guess it's the Trekkie in me, while everyone was wet for Captain Kirk, it was Spock for me...Must've been the ears and those eyebrows... ;D I didn't take my meds last night, I just didn't want to but you guys made some good and logical points so I will take them tonight, I promise. I still haven't heard back from the nurse with the appointment dates to the specialists. I'll give them til about 1 or so then I will call and find out myself. I am still trying to wrap my head around it all but then I am so tired of asking why. I have done it when I lost my hearing, became poz, and now this. I am to the point of why ask why but I insist that I am angry and my anger is directed at my God/dess.

Jan--- Well, if YOU say it then it is official. I rule the forums, Peter and Tim just do all the dirty work... ;D Funny, you mentioned Queen Victoria, that was my mother's name.

Ann-- Also funny you mentioned that Queen Victoria partook of the good green. So did my mother, she smoked her first joint when she was 29 and pregnant with me. So my habit is hereditary, I knew it and I am sticking with that story.. ;D

Hermie-- So good to hear from you. I like that avy too. Wishes I could be there to toke some of the green you got over there.

Aunty D--- I love you beyond words. I love that Poak Chop video too. I think I am going to learn that dance and when I get past this, that will be my celebration dance and song... :-*

I love you all and I thank you for your support. Please keep sending the good vibes because I am running on E about now and I will draw my strength from you all. I will continue to keep you updated with my emotions and with the specialists. I have been through a lot in my little 39 years but this is the hardest fight I have had to take on and believe me I am not going out without a fight. I am ghetto, thuggish, logical, strong but most of all I am a Queen. Love ya's... :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

My dear Queen,

I think it's perfectly normal to want to stop everything (treatments etc.) when there's a possible looming malady.  But, you don't want things to get much worse and spiral out of control.

Your anger is validated.  When my 1st husband died, a therapist asked me if I was angry at God.  I said "I can't be.  I might get struck by lightening or something."  He replied "Don't you think God is big enough to handle your anger?"  So, I allowed myself the anger.

I hope you're getting some answers.  We're still here for ya, and waiting on the news.
   Luv,
Betty

No news yet, I called my primary doctor's office and spoke with the nurse. The one specialist was closed yesterday and the other one never got back with her...So she says she will call them back today and let me know. I still have not heard back from my clinic nurse with what my ID doc is wanting me to do. Maybe it's just me but it seems like everyone is just sitting on their asses. I know it's only been a day but hey, I want to just get all this over with. :-\

EDITED: My appointments with the specialists---one is one April 30th and the other is on May 12th.

First, I will stick with the original topic and mention that I have been doing some research on biopsies. From what I have found out when one has a cyst on a lung it is likely a pocket of air on the lung. I am hoping this is the case with me. As for the liver, well that was a bit more complicated and not sure if I was comprehending totally what I was reading. But it sounds like to me that if it a biopsy of the liver than they are looking to see if it is cancer or few other things. What I am not thrilled about is a needle going through a tube and them sucking a piece of lung or liver out. I know it must be done but I am scared of needles, it took me a long time to just get use to getting my blood drawn or shots. I use to get light headed. I know, go figure with all the horror movies I love to watch. What I am hoping is that I can be put to sleep for these procedures. In the case of the lung biopsy, if I move or anything, it can lead to a punctured lung. I jump when I get blood drawn, ok. I want to be put to sleep. My sister suggested that since they may have to do biopsies for both that the doctors do them both on the same day to make for less trauma to my body. I am going to suggest this to both specialists.

Now since the title of this thread is the hits keep coming, I feel I can add this new event here too. My youngest son went to jail yesterday. He is only 17 yrs old. He has 11 charges against him including attempted homicide and 7 counts of reckless endangerment. If you want the details, peep in the Women's Dating thread, I posted the local news article there from today's paper. It made the local tv news yesterday. He called me a few times today. I am trying not to stress too much about it because at this point, I really feel I can't afford to. All I can do is vent which what I have been trying to do. How much more am I suppose to take? I seriously feel like I am at my breaking point but something just keeps pushing me on. Maybe it is my guardian angels... :'(

I think all the prayers and good vibes must be affecting me. I woke up today feeling rather calm about things. I guess I am accepting things and will just go from there. Not like I have much choice in the matter, is it? I thank you all for your support and keep it coming. The appointments are just the beginning, I am aware of that and I have taken everyone's advice and started back on my meds. I figure if there is bad news, I am going to need all the strength I can muster to overcome whatever it may be.

Dear Queen:

I have had this disease for approximately 26 years.  There was no test for it when I was first infected.  I started antiviral treatment in February 1992 and have lost most of the sensation in my lower extremities and other parts of my body from the neurotoxic class.  I don't know anyone else who has lived as long as I have unless they were undetectable.  Unfortunately I have never been undetectable.  I just started a six drug regimen and a bit concerned about whether my liver and kidneys will hold up.

I am inclined to agree with the other commentators about not stopping the drugs.  However, I would also not listen to everything clinicians tell you as well.  If you stop the drugs, you may never be able to use them again.  That is hiv.  You have a one shot chance of going undetectable and if you don't go undetectable you will develop class resistance.

There are things you can do to help your liver.  There are published papers that recommend adding one teaspoon of ground milk thistle seeds with your evening meal.  This is not the preground milk thistle you buy in the store.  You need to buy a bag of unground milke thisle.  Milk Thistle seeds are commonly used in the hindu cooking and were used by early americans on their quest west.  Another thing you can do is add 1-2 teaspoons of L-glutamine powder on an empty stomach.  There are also published reports on this.

If all else fails, and your liver croaks, one of the hospitals in England has been doing liver regeneration studies and they have a 60% success rate for people with liver failure.  If you get desperate and need more info, ICQ me at ICQ 118179171 in invisible mode.  You need to find out what the liver cyst is from.

After 26 years, the only drugs I would caution you about is the neurotoxic class.  You should avoid DDI, D4T or DDC unless it is the only option available to you.  Although not as toxic and commonly prescribed, 3TC and FTC can also cause problems.  I wouldn't quit taking your drugs yet.  If your doctor doesn't have an appointment slot available, you should march into their office and demand to be seen.

There is no question that the drugs are a problem for all of us, but I come from a generation when people commonly died within 6-9 months after being diagnosed.  For all the hell the drugs cause, they are definitely better than not taking them at all.

Drink lots of water during the day, avoid alcohol  (more than 1/4 cup of wine) once a week.  Try and get as much sleep as possible; this means going to bed at 9am and getting up with the chickens.  The best thing you can do is to get active and involved with others and try and change the political situation.

I have multi-class resistance.  I am on the last regimen available to me.  I am taking Abacavir, Viread, Duranavir, TMC 125, Norvir, and Raltegravir.    I can't take 3tc or any of the neurotoxic drugs.  Don't stop your drugs without getting more information.  When seeking a provider, check to see that your provider is dual board certified with both an Infectious Disease Credential and also a credential from the hiv association.  My experience with clinicians is that those who seek extra credentials have a tendancy to be more qualified.  Another thing to look for is someone that has mainly hiv patients and a lot of experience and hopefully patience to work with you.  I empathize with you, but have some faith

Rita Reports used to be a good source of information, but they changed their format in February and I no longer like their newsletter.  That is one of the reasons I am logged on to here tonight.

Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.  ICQ 1181791717 (invisible mode)

I really don't think this was so much about Queen stopping meds, as to what she's dealing with-the noticeable cysts on her liver and lung and her son's recent trouble.

Hi Queen~

Forgive me for the late reply.  I'm sorry to hear about all of the shit that's on your shoulders now.  I agree with the others here, please don't stop your meds.  If your defenses are down you don't need to add to it by not adhering.

Its a good sign that you can see a doc this week, usually you have to wait forever to see a specialist.

I am keeping my fingers croseed!

Wow, what a post by ZCorker.  Well, it sounds like you know your stuff, Z but a lot of what you said went right over my head. I am not familiar with the classes of drugs and what not. I just know what I take and how I am suppose to take them. I did start back on my meds like a good little Queen. I am hoping my liver will not give out on me but if it did, it's not likely I make it to England.

I really don't drink much at all. It is in spells and usually consists of nothing more than a glass or two of wine. If it is beer then one of those usually with a shot of tequila. But it not often that I drink. You must be doing something right since you are still here after 26 years of living with your virus. Congrats on that. I haven't had ICQ in years but am available on Yahoo.

And Betty, you are on point as always. Cindy, yeah, I appreciate the quick dates with specialists because I am feeling like time is of the essence here. I just hope if they both want to do biopsies that they can do them at the same time. It would be easier for me and I mos definitely want to be sleep for the procedure.

Not really much to report. It would seem that I have some type of thickness on the lining of my intestinal wall and a shadow of something. They are not sure what to make of either from the cat scan. So now I am scheduled or will be for next week to get 2 sonograms done, one of my liver and the other of my gallbladder. I also have to have a colonoscopy done on June 5th. If you want the details of the visit then I suggest you check out my blog(shameless plug). But I did have a bit of fun with the intern who was cute in a Jewish boy sort of way.

I try to flirt with all the medical staff I see.  I want them to be nice and take real good care of me.  Or maybe I'm just a big tease ... either way it seems to be working.  I hope everything goes well with your other tests and appointments

The last sonogram I had was of my thyroid a few years back. I am overdue for a colonoscopy and I had been putting it off. The thought of something going up my ass just wasn't appealing to me but maybe I should've gotten it done sooner. Hindsight and all that junk.

Fearless, you noticed that too. What gets me is the shit is usually uncalled for when it comes down to it and I am the one who never starts shit. And it is never my shit but other people's shit that they expect me to deal with or take care of. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttt!!!!! >:(

Just a brief update---MRI is scheduled for Wednesday, same day as my appointment with my ID doc so I should have a bit to report or hopefully not. Then the coming Friday is the sonogram. My nerves haven't kicked in yet, I expect that to happen closer to appointment time. Just sending out a memo is all...

Not much of an update but an update...Went and had the MRI done today, I guess results will be back in a few days. I went to my ID doc too for an appointment. Here is where I need some advice. Viral load was not back yet but my cd4 was at 705 and percentage at 26. Sounded great to me but my doc thinks because I missed a week of meds that it is not accurate. You can look at my sig and see what my counts have been since I started the Atripla. I don't think it is a mistake but we decided to do another cd4 and viral load in about a month to see who is right...me or him. I know I am not a doctor but if my cd4 damn near doubled from the time I started and within 3 months time, why is it so hard for him to believe that my cd4 could actually be 705?

I decided to go with it until the next draw. I have had enough bad news when it comes to my health in other areas so I'm going with it and believeing this is not some kind of blip. But I would appreciate some input from you guys if you feel up to it.

I see no reason why your CD4s couldn't go up.  But, I suppose your doctor is just being cautious.  Good luck.

Tomorrow is the appointment with the lung specialist. I will post what I find out. I haven't heard anything back from the liver specialist about the MRI but I think I will call my primary tomorrow and see what he can find out. I just wish they would keep me in the damn loop. You would think they would think I would want to know the results.

Hey queen.....

I think you're right on ("You would think they would think I would want to know the results.")

One thing I've realized is that this virus is so many different things to different people.  Some have been positive 20+ years and still not on meds. Others start meds well above 300 t-cells and never seem to move.  Still others start meds with a hand full of t-cells and take quantum leaps to respectable numbers.  So, yeah, I think it possible and I'll keep my fingers crossed that is true.  I've also been keeping up on everything else and am hoping for the best.

Back from the lung specialist. It would seem that the nodule on my lung is very small. So small that the specialist is even surprised that the cat scan picked it up. He doesn't know what it is but says it is not cancer. The only thing he can do is monitor it for the next 2 years and get scans done every 4 months. Now the liver specialist says that there is indeed a lesion on my liver but now he wants to send me to UPMC in Pittsburgh or some clinic in Cleavland depending on which one will accept my insurance. That gives me cause to worry because it makes me feel that it must be something serious if they want me to go out of town to get it looked at. But it also leaves the problem of how in the hell am I going to get there? My car is still not legal yet and I can depend on my friend who takes me to all my other appointments to drive me out of town. I swear if it isn't one thing, it is definitely another. But that is pretty much it and they still haven't gotten all my lab results back yet.

Hey!!
Lets assume that its all good news so far.  Your lung specialist is giving you a " pass" on the lung problem.  I'd say thats really good.
So I'm hoping for more good news.

Queen -- I'm impressed with how much effort you are putting into having all your health issues looked into and dealt with.  I joined this thread late, but am hoping all your tests end up with relatively easy solutions.  Stay strong.

Joel---Yeah, the news from the lung specialist was good news but can't help but feel the news from the liver specialist as bad. Whenever something is wrong in these parts they ship you off to Pittsburgh or Cleavland.

Peter--- My late case manager at my ASO encouraged me to be proactive with my health. I remember when I wouldn't even go to clinic appointments and he had to bribe me to get me there. Since then, I have made it a point to stay on top of things regarding my health. I usually go along with what my doctors say but best believe I ask a lot of questions. I learned that since being a part of these forums. The nurses love that I do but I think it kind of gets on the doctors' nerves. I already have enough health issues working against me and if I can live with this virus for over 10 years, I refuse to let anything else take me out without a fight.

Good news that they aren't worried about the cyst and hopefully the liver lession is something that can be easily dealt with.  Rather than being worried about being sent to PIT or CLE be happy (or try to be -- I know easier said then done) that they are trying to get you the best possible care.

I hope you have great news to post soon!

I'm not complaining about them trying to get me the best possible care but if the doctor I saw was suppose to be a specialist then why the hell do I have to travel to Pittsburgh or Cleavland? Just because a trip for them to those places is probably not a problem, it may well just be one for me. I am not made of money---so it's not like I can go rent a car and just go.

I sooo understand.  I have to travel 3hrs each way every few weeks to see my GI people since the ones I had up here told me my case was too complex for them.  The gas alone is driving me further into the poor house.  I was just trying to put a positive spin on it ... but yeah it sucks.

congrats on the lung news!1 down and 2 more to go. when is the appt with the other dr? hey, how far is it? i know your state is small as hell. here in big ol cali from sd to sf can be a good 10 + hours. i know, its a really irrelevant example and 30 minutes away without a car is a bitch.  but, with that said, maybe if your appt is far enough in the future you can plan things out to your advantage.

now, how do you feel? i hope the lung prognosis has brought a lil calm into your life and allowed you to focus more of your energies elsewhere. keep up posted qt : )

I wish I had something to report, sweetheart. They have not called me back to let me know where I am suppose to be going. I did contact my ASO for assistance but I won't find anything out til next week sometime because my case manager only comes in twice a week. I will give them a call tomorrow to see if I can find out anything. I haven't even gotten the blood work results back. I guess it must have been a busy week for them and honestly I am catching my breath from all these scans and tests that I had done. Something tells me that wherever they decide to send me, I'll probably be making a few return trips.

Another update...I am scheduled to go to UPMC Preb on June 3rd. Now I have to figure out how I am going to get there. I am thinking of trying to rent a car, that would be the easiest option if I can come up with the money.

Queen, do you have a friend or relative with a car who might be willing to drive you if you paid for the gas?  (and maybe bought them lunch?)  I'd sure take you if I was close enough honey....

I  know what it's like.  I'd be up the creek without a paddle if I didn't have my vehicle, because all my medical care is one hour south of me.

Hope you are able to work through it....

love & hugs,

Alan

Well, let's see...train is not an option because none would get me there on time, I didn't bother with how much it was when I saw what the schedule was, there was no point. The hound leaves before banks open so I wouldn't make in time to buy a ticket and the next one would get me there too late. My case manager at my ASO is trying to contact my case worker to see if she can do anything which I doubt she can. The only option I see is renting a car and even in that case I would have to take money from one of my bills to pay for it. But I need a CC, I have pre-paid one but not sure if the car rental place will accept that. If they don't then basically I am stuck like Chuck.
Frustrating to say the least and am hoping for a miracle. At this point, I need something to go my way for a change.

I don't understand the "bank" excuse.  Why can't you withdraw money the day before?

Why do you consider it an excuse? I am simply telling the truth. I am not made of money and don't have but a few dollars, literally in my account. I can not withdraw my money the day before check day? If it was in there at a time when I could then I would purchase a ticket the day before. My money does not get into my account until the wee hours of the morning and by then the greyhound station is not open. Not everyone can jet set around the world like you do, dear!

You didn't explain it in those terms the first go around.  How am I to know every intricacy of your life?  Jebus.

So, why don't you try and change the day of this appointment?  Though I don't know why I'd bother suggesting something because you're just going to bite my head off.

Well, excuse me for being a bit frustrated. Things don't come as easily to me as they seem to for you. I don't have long distance to call Pittsburgh and reschedule. And I'm quite sure if I could they wouldn't schedule on check day like they did this time. Which would allow me to have some change to eat with or whatever. But I am sure that just sounds like another excuse to you, I am sure.

I am not here pan handling for money but thought I was updating those who seem to give a damn. But since it appears that I am whining, at least to you, I will keep my thoughts to myself or express them elsewhere.

So if any moderators would please lock this thread, I would appreciate it.

Hi Queenie
Is there anyway you can use your credit card at an ATM and withdraw your money before the greyhound station opens, so you can have the money for when the station opens and be able to purchase your ticket for the early bus?...have you heard anything from your ASO regarding getting help from your case worker?.

I called Enterprise's national number and based on the conversation I had you would be well-advised to call them, explain what you have and don't have. They sell damage waiver insurance, personal liability insurance up to $1 million and have policies/procedures that come into play when someone doesn't have a major credit card. When they ask you to bring a utility receipt and pay stub, don't stop there, explain the disability component and keep moving forward. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Make some calls! If they can't help you, call another agency, but Enterprise has distinct advantages including the pick you up at your door service.

I understand that my use of the word "excuse" was clumsy and misconstrued.  And certainly no where did I, or anyone else for that matter, imply that you were asking for cash donations from the board.  Not sure where that one came from.  I understand that you are frustrated, but it wasn't just me that didn't understand the "June 3rd" factor instantly.

It's unfortunate that you feel the need to lash out at others that are trying to help you, and I for one know that I've helped you in the past with information so frankly I'm a bit appalled at the supposition you have made.  Like I said, I apologize for my wording and hope you sort out this situation.

Hello your majesty

Sorry to read how difficult things are recently.  I was inspired by Emeraldize's post and did some additional checking into greyhound, since you had mentioned it as your initial choice above.  They have a web site that appears to accept credit cards and provides that you can either pick up the ticket or have it mailed to you.  It might be worthwhile to see if they would accept your credit card over the internet (the non-refundable fare appears to be $47 round trip if I have your itinerary correct)

Hope this is useful and not just sending you down a path you've tried already

I think she noted in a post she has a pre-paid credit card which is what people are referring to as a credit card.

One other possibility to check out is Craigslist...I did. Found the following poster who periodically makes runs from Pgh to Erie and back. Why not contact them, see if their schedule jibes with yours? And, make your own Craigslist post saying you need a ride on a certain day/time. Heck, if you can get one way knocked out that will save you some money and all you do is contribute to their gas.(even though this person sounds willing to just be eco-conscious) Your return trip could be by bus because you don't have the same restrictions as to arrival time for an appointment. Copy of post follows. Please don't speed read this person's post. I know it says May 11 or 12th, but it also says this person makes this trip fairly frequently and encourages contact to discuss other dates.

Offered - Ride to Erie (Pittsburgh)

I was just wondering if anyone wanted to carpool with me or just needed a ride to Erie on Sunday May 11th or really early Monday May 12th. I just hate to waste my gas on only myself when I can carpool if someone needs to. Additionally I make this trip somewhat frequently so if this doesn't work you can ask me if another time is good.

Um, part of Queen's problem is that she does NOT have a credit card.

Just sayin...

And basically having a prepaid credit card is not worth anything either. I did call Enterprise, Em. And for me to use my prepaid card, I have to put down a deposit as well as the money for the rental, along with 2 bills(utility) with a zero balance. I don't have any bills with a zero balance though they have been getting paid monthly.

And riding with a stranger even if they are posting in Craig's list does not sound safe to me. Would you really do something like that? So, I don't consider that an option, the world is too crazy to be jumping in a car with someone I wouldn't even know, my ass could end up in a ditch somewhere. And I don't consider that exaggerating.

And the hound with my prepaid would not work because I could not purchase it in advance. Have to have money on the prepaid and can't do that til the day of and once banks open which would conflict with the bus  schedule. I appreciate those of you who are trying to think of options for me.

Philly, I owe you an apology. I shouldn't have snapped at you the way I did. I am running on pure frustration at the moment. I know you were trying to help. And I am woman enough to admit when I am wrong. So, I apologize to you.

To answer your question, yes, I really would, but not as a result of the scenario you envision.

Frankly, there's something to the tone of the first Craig's list that struck me it was a woman author. But, it really doesn't matter what I would do---you don't want to contact someone, you won't.

Most everyone here has taken a risk at one time or another far, far greater than finding out if someone on Craigslist is legit. You don't just jump in a car. You correspond/talk to the person, you get information, etc. and so do they. Do you think they'd take "just anyone" on a 2-1/2 hour ride without some due diligence?

Don't you think that person is taking an equally great risk? Hell, you could hijack their car AND kill them.

Anyone's ass can end up in a ditch, or raped in a motel, and it quite often happens when someone is kidnapped in a store parking lot getting into their car. If I had no viable alternatives that pleased me, I'd look seriously at the next tier of options and figure out if any were viable.

Well, I'm so curious to see if my hunch is correct, I'm going to contact the author to see if it is a woman. And, no matter who it is, female or male, I'm going to learn how a Craigslist interaction would go in case I ever want to contact someone on Craigslist who's selling an item, offering babysitting or tutoring, needs an employee, or, needs a ride to a city I'm headed to----'cause with the price of gas at $4.00/gal---ridesharing is a very intelligent thing to do--financially and ecologically.

You'd be amazed how people get around in the developing world. The risk is the ride itself due to terrain, vehicle condition, war, politics-- not the because of the driver or the complete strangers one is jammed up against in the back of an open-bed truck.

Good luck finding a ride.

Honestly, what I said doesn't seem far fetched to me. Good Luck corresponding with whoever about getting a ride. I will not risk my LIFE riding with a stranger and Craig's list has had it's share of rip offs or whatever. I believe that someone on the forums got a room mate from there and it turned out badly.

I will wait and see what else my case manager will come up with, if nothing then I won't go, simple as that.

well qt, i hope something comes up for you soon.

one of my friends used her vehicle to pick up people from airports and drop them off places. i don't know if she used craigslist to advertise her services, but nothing bad ever happened to her.

i also got my last roommate from craigslist, big mistake. he was a lil weird, but he paid his bills ontime.

haha, guess im no real help : ) -- but i do hope this works out for you. how much will it cost to get from point a to point b? since you are getting paid that day, is there any way you can borrow funds for a week or so? maybe one of those usury pay day advances or something similar? what about wired money? what abour rescheduling? im sorry if you posted answers to these responses elsewhere, i apologize in advance if that is the case.

best,

Having succeeded in causing utter amazement with my admitting I would actually ride with someone who advertised ridesharing on Craigslist, and making it quite clear I would determine if that person was someone with whom I would travel, I thought I'd do a little more research to see if I'm unusual in this regard. Am I crazy? I'd better find out!

So, I Googled Craigslist and rideshare and carpooling and it seems I have lots of company in the land of daredevils gone wild. For the skittish or glazed-eyed, Craigslist publishes the following on their site which jibes perfectly with what I would do IF I were shopping for a ride, or moving into a new apartment, or dating --none of which I'm doing. To clarify, again, I noted I would contact a poster to learn firsthand how the interaction can go and what their experience has been, too. I've already sent two e-mails and await their replies.

Personal Safety Tips       Avoiding Scams & Fraud       craigslist help forum

The overwhelming majority of craigslist users are trustworthy and well-intentioned.

With billions of human interactions facilitated through craigslist, the incidence of violent crime has been extremely low.

Nevertheless, it's very important to take the same precautions online as you would offline.

When meeting someone for the first time, please remember to:

Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe

Tell a friend or family member where you're going

Take your cell phone along if you have one

Consider having a friend accompany you

Trust your instincts

Taking these simple precautions helps make craigslist safer for everyone.

For more information about personal safety online, check out these resources:

http://getsafeonline.org

http://wiredsafety.org

I've ridden in commercial planes, private planes, buses, cabs, usually with a complete stranger at the controls. I'm trusting they haven't had a drink; that their licenses are current; their cardiac profile is good; that there's not a terrorist on board or some other lunatic to throw in a variable of danger; and that the vehicle or aircraft has been inspected (Ha! these days given the tightness of the FAA and airlines) and is in good running condition---but they've got a customer service desk, so I should trust 'em. If I ride in a car with a family member or friend, I'm trusting they aren't gonna have a seizure or embolism; I'm trusting there won't be some drunk driver out that night or a deer beating a path to a stream or away from hunters on the move. And, if I opted to use Craigslist, or the Yellow Pages list, I'd do it with an amount of caution that would get me to the point where I'd know if it was a go or a no go. But, at no point did I write nor imply a complete stranger would pull up to my house and I'd jump into the car. I have more sense than that although it might not seem so given a protracted and gently ridiculed attempt to assist, but I do.

This exercise has made me aware of how much trust we place in "complete strangers" every day and that many of them treat us better than family members and alleged friends. Whether they're cops, firemen, ER nurses and docs, lineworkers, cable installers, train conductors, pilots, or cabbies---bottomline, they're complete strangers. Oh yes, and I further trust that the chef hasn't dipped his hair in my soup, the waitress hasn't fingered everything I'm going to eat or drink from with filthy hands, and that the bus boy hasn't wiped his snotty nose before depositing my glass. Enter the complete stranger...who can give me Hepatitis, a nasty cold, food poisoning or worse. All of these complete strangers I let into my life, every day. I should know better by now. It's sometimes an unfortunate part of trying to get from point A to B that I must let them in. From being hungry to sated, bleeding profusely to stitched, from breathless screaming to 911 there's a guy breaking into my house now to thank you officer, I'll be okay and on and on.

And, with a note of clarification...there isn't a person who signs on to this site, oversees this site, lurks this site or doesn't know they're headed to this site who doesn't have struggles of some sort. It is an integral part of life! Whether it's Sharon who was stricken with polio in the 50's and HIV in the 90's, or Tendai whose life is affected dramatically by politics---we all get a ration of crap for varying periods of time--some seem to get an entire lifetime's worth. Even Kennedy clansman, Ted, winds up with a glioblastoma, oh yes, after he's buried parents, brothers, Mary Jo and nephews and also been buried alive by media over time. Struggles are part of everyone's life and hopefully everyone gets some measure of joy or comfort to counterbalance.

This brings to  mind that age-old concept of if everyone were to put their troubles and woes in the center of the table along with everyone else's, they would soon, almost happily take their lot right back seeing what others must awaken to each day.

You are right about everyone having their own lot of troubles, not sure if that was a jibe at me or not. And certainly there are some, Tendai was the perfect example by the way but I can only comment on mine. Sorry, I do not agree with those so -called dare devils of Craig's list. If you wish, you can blame it on the countless horror movies I have seen...ie Texas Chainsaw or how about CSI, that would probably be more credible to you.

And I assume that you will be lining up rides from here on out from those dare devils on Craig's list. You have my addy, send me some post cards so I know where you have been. You, know since Craig's list recommends letting someone know where you are.

Just another update. I am going to my appointment to see the specialist in Pittsburgh tomorrow. My gay friend is driving me and I am paying for the gas...Good deal and right on time. He had his car checked at the garage today so everything should be a GO.

Since I haven't been out of town in a long while. I figured I would take my trusty little cam and take pictures. I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

I figured I bitched long enough about how I was going to get there, now that I am going, I plan to have some fun along the way. And you know it about the blog, I will put something up tonight before bed and post some pics and blog some more when I get back.

My dear Queen, you know I'll be thinking about you tomorrow.  And waiting to hear what happens.

Thanks Betty, Snow, Sharkie and Alan. I will carry those good thoughts with me. I will post the outcome here,in the Women's thread and do a blog. Well, if I am not too tired when I get back. On the way back, we have to stop at the Grove City Mall because my gay friend's dog, Ginger only eats the dog bones from there. What a bitch, she would eat what I gave her.... :D

It turned out to be an interesting trip, we got lost trying to find the hospital but finally ended up getting directions. By the time I got there, I just knew they were going to reschedule me, I was 30 minutes late and they didn't.

What I did find out is that I have a fever of 100, not sure what that is about because other than being tired from the trip, I feel fine. What was weird to me was the specialist asking me why I was there. I said,"Uh, because the local specialist did the MRI, not sure what he saw but I was asked to see YOU." The specialist went on to say that though there is scaring as he called it which could be caused by the meds I am taking, it is nothing to worry about, he said. He also went on to assure me that I did not have cancer but said it could possibly be the beginning stages of liver disease but did not want to say it for sure until I get more blood work done. If the blood work gives him reason for concern then he would do a biopsy. And he just kept saying he didn't know why they sent me down there.

So once again after going through hysterics, everything seems to be fine. Irritated that I had to go into a frenzy to see a specialist I really didn't need to see but also feels relieved at the same time.

----Insert Jeopardy theme----- I'll take, "My local specialist played me for a 1000 Alex"

I am due to go back to Pittsburgh on August 5th.

Queen- That must have been a huge relief although it must have been totally frustrating at the same time.  Does your local guy usually deal with poz people?  I am glad everything turned out alright.  I have to rob Peter to pay Paul every month :) what can you do, you definately made the right choice.  Get some rest.

Ok, refresh my memory here, last situation? My son? Still locked up and still hoping for a hail mary to get him out the mess he got himself into. My colonoscopy has been pushed back to August 1. Meeting a therapist on the 11th....*scratching head and wondering what you are talking about* But hell, I am tired so I am not thinking straight at the moment.

I hate when one hand does not know what the other is doing, seems like it happens a lot with doctors and referrals

Hi QT
Hey thats good news! Its just what the doctor ordered so to speak. Now, if the Dr in Pittsburgh could talk to your Dr in Erie by phone or fax or cell or whatever they do these days...YOU wouldnt have to go to Pittsburgh.  Just a thought.

*enters the room, walks up to the mic and starts singing Pat Benatar's Hit me with your best shot*

Well I called when I got up to see what my new cd4 and viral load was since I haven't been 100 % adherant with my hiv meds. At one point I stopped for about a week and then got back on. But then I had stopped one and kept taking the other, not to worry I went back on the other last night after the news from Pittsburgh. My cd4 is now at 775 from 705 and still undetectable. So, hell yeah, I am on cloud 9 and these are the best kinds of shots to get....the good ones.

You would think they would pick up their cells and talk. But I need someone to talk to me after or if they ever talk.
