Title: Are You Using An iPhone App For Meds?
Post by: WindySkies on October 20, 2012, 10:41:49 am
If so, which ones?  I looked at a few and some looked really cool.  There was one for birth control that you digitally pushed the pill out of the packet to keep track of how many doses you had left.

As a male, that would be funny if someone was playing with my phone and wondering why I had a birth control pill counter!

I use the iStayHealthy app. I like it. But I would like a way to keep track of how many pills I have left. Sometimes I have a brain fart and I can't remember if I took my pill. Then I have to count my pills and count back the days on the calendar to be sure I don't miss a dose or double dose.

You could also use a pill box.  They are about $1.99 at Walgreens and considering how simplistic they are they are very effective at keeping track of your meds and determining if you took today's medication.

Pill box is a great, simple recommendation for sure.  I guess with an App, it might make it more fun, and I'm sure that can't be a bad thing!

Lol. I guess I am truly a blond at my roots! Of course a pill box duh! I use them for my vitamins, ha! Well I use the app mostly to track my progress, plus I like the little graphs. It has a place for notes if you're having side effects too.

Who doesn't like graphs!  They are colorful and they mean stuff!

I use Isayhealthy as well..I like having the charts and my numbers at hand. It also sends an alert to remind me to take meds.

But for my meds, I use a pill box..its easy and give my kids more material to make fun of my age...

yeah MrMO, i think that is the reason i dont use the pill box.  I see my mom and dad using them, they have every pill in the world in it from viatamins to medications.  i just refuse to carry one of those around at 41yo.....haha.  i'm not ready to resort to it yet.. i only have 3 pills to take so i can keep up with that pretty well

I've been using Dosecast on my iPhone. I don't know if it available on Android or not. It doesn't track labs but it is the most complete electronic pill box I've found. It will send alterts when it is time to take a dose, track how many pills are left, send an alert when it's time for a refill, track the number of refills, and the Dr, pharmacy and script #. It also logs when you took the doses so you have a record of your treatment compliance.

There's a little bit of data entry initially. But once that is done, you only enter what and when you take a dose.

But I still use a plastic pill box too. It's easier to carry than whole bottles. The one I have each day can pop out and fit in my pocket if I'm going out.

Me thinks some of you all are over complicating it.  Then again, I'm from a medication era where we had to set alarms to take meds precisely every 4 hours, day and night.

I just take my morning meds with my coffee and my evening ones with a glass of wine.  There is great latitude with the schedule and preciseness isn't required.

I also carry a pill fob on my keychain in case I'm out later in the evening (which doesn't happen often ;D) than I expect.

I agree my fair Wolfie -- seems like a lot of work with these phone apps. I have nine bottles of pills and supplements and don't even use a pill box or alarms. Never have.

For folks that are new to taking medication daily, I can see where a pillbox alone may not be enough.  Sure the pillbox will tell you that, yes, you took that dose or NO, you did not take it -- but it can't build the habit of taking it.

Early on, I used my phone as an alarm to take my evening pills -- I was already in the habit of taking my Zocor and multivitamin in the morning.  Now -- it is a habit and I don't require reminders.  I think I've missed, maybe, 2 doses in nearly 7 years.

So....  do what you must to get a good habit established.  Personally, I don't see why anyone would NOT use a pillbox -- it will tell you point blank if you missed a dose.   I don't carry mine around, so no one, besides my partner, knows I have one.  Hell, I even use a pillbox for my cat's meds!

Good luck,
Mike

Please dear -   you can't keep track of your debit card if there is a cute twink rubbing your hiney--- you expect me to believe that you track your meds out of a bottle.  ppffffft..

Yeah im with Willy, i just grab my pills out of the bottle when i get up and go! i do use the IStayHealthy App on both my tablet and my phone to chart my lab results and set reminders to take my meds, but now that im in the swing of taking them they are more annoying than anything. And someone mentioned the little keychain to keep pills in, my pharmacist gave me one, and at first i was skeptical, pulled an adam sandler and said something about keeping my weed in there, but it has been the best thing if i cant get home to get to my bottle, but just beware if u jingle ur keys too much, the pills WILL bust apart and those keyfobs are a beast to clean out.
I will say tho, that i have learned to pitch the smaller pill bottles and put the labels on the empty larger ones, that way i can just keep 4 LARGE bottles in the nightstand instead of 12 that are all diff shapes and sizes, its easier when i go to re-up at the pharmacy too bc i can just come home, put the new label on my big bottle and dump the pills in, then pitch the empty bottle.
Another thing, if you carry the keychain or your pills in your pocket, MAKE sure to keep one of those cards in your wallet or purse that proves you are supposed to have that pill on you, the pharmacy gives them to you with your script, the local yocal cop was telling me one night at work how he could pull me over and if he found that and i didnt have that paper on me he could ticket me, so i hide all my script cards behind my kroger card in my wallet

I dose straight out of the bottles. Yes, I'm that good.  8)

moi... and that's a dozen bottles twice a day :)

Every two weeks, I count out my pills and dump them into one handy sized pill bottle.  It takes about 5 minutes tops to do.  From then on, I dump out the daily dose and chug em down with breakfast every day almost without thinking about it.  It's just something that I do at this point like brushing my teeth when I'm finished with the coffee and eggs.

Not to say HIV is no big deal.  Just the opposite - to point out that, with minimal real effort, you can learn to integrate meds requirements and that eventually all the whistle and bell tricks can fade away.  Trust...when I started out, I did all the cell phone alarms and all that.  Of course, those old pills required that I carry around a cooler in the car, too, so pill life is all around easier these days.

We've come a long way, baby.   8)

Hardcore hoes.  Not me, girls.  No, no, no.  Remembering to take these pills is such a difficult task  ::).  I even keep an excel sheet, a blog, and feeds on both Tumblr and Twitter of the times when I take mah meds.  I'm also considering a YouTube daily video-diary to make sure that I don't forget.

I wonder how them chirrens remember to go to the lab for blood work or their appointments with the ID doctor.
