Four years gone in 5 minutes!

    I've cut myself and done so severely..... I have to interview for the RN program this Fall and well... the dreads are gone.  I ain't gonna lie, it was tough.

   Sucks being a ball head again...

It will be worth it skeebs --- and you can always grow them back - in the meantime, there is a good beauty supply store near me that sells extensions.   ;D    I'm just sayin.....

Judging from the bald spot I have growing in the back I highly doubt I'll ever grow them again.  Hell, I can't even go back to my hightop fade because one side of my hairline is making my forehead seem larger.  And to think I thought I threw out my vanity long ago.... depressing. (j/k)

Well, it could be worse --- you could be experiencing all this in Florida ----- oh, that's right, you are in Florida  ;)

Preserve them in wax and then do lost-wax castings of them later--they will make wonderful trinkets and conversation pieces.

Awww, Skee, sorry you had to give up the locs but it is for a good cause. I have been considering getting locs. I have not put a perm in my hair for a few months trying to grow the perm out. But I am nervous I may have to get my hair cut off if the perm hasn't grown completely out. Any helpful tips?

They were taken away with this mornings trash already.  I did it last night without letting my wife or kids know what I was doing, needless to say, they were shocked as hell when I came out of the bathroom with no hair.  I figured there would be a bunch of garbage trapped inside of them however, I was surprised they were completely clean.

Not really sure Michelle, it really depends on what kind of hair you have.  My hair is straight.  I used the natural method as opposed to what they call the backcombing method.  Once my hair reached about 7 inches I started washing every two days with a shampoo that strips out all the natural oils in my hair and stayed away from conditioners.  This allows the hair to tangle and eventually lock up.  It's a long process that took about two years before I was even proud of them.  

If your hair is naturally curly you can use the twist and rip method.  You should consult a loctician in your area to discuss the best method for your hair type.  Going natural is a journey and tough on ones pride, but in the end generally looks the best in my opinion.

If you want uniform and even sized dreads natural is definitely not the way to go.  And some of the other methods can give you nice looking locks in a matter of months, again depending on your hair type.  People with curly hair generally lock up twice as fast as people with straight and they also tend to look better as well.

Well being mixed like I am, I don't have the typical nappy black hair but yet I don't have the ultra straight puerto rican hair either. I am kinda in between but my hair is thin, not cuz of age but always has been. I want to go see a loctician in the future. How much does it cost to maintain? I am sure it prolly costs to see a loctician like any other salon. I was paying up to 150 at one point getting my hair done in micros braids or sew in.

This is all new to me. Netta, helped me out by giving me a site to check out which I have been doing. But I have been amazed seeing white boys with locs. Any tips you can give would be helpful.

The sight Netta provided you might have the best advice regarding your hair-type.  I'll be honest, the shampoo I used was from Dreadhead and I would not put that stuff in my daughters' (who are "mixed") hair.  They do have a wax that is one of the best on the market.  I couldn't use it because of my hair type but you would be fine using it.  I know certain hair types (like mine) have to keep the hair as dried out (no oils) as possible , where as, African Americans need to condition their locks to keep the hair healthy...

not really sure about it though...  It would be best to at least consult with a loctician so you can know the best route for you.  

I have a lady friend who has locks and is African-American.  All she did was twist her hair into locks.   She says she only sees the loctician for maintenance every 6 months.  One thing I will advise though, regarding a loctician, if they so much as talk about interlocking find a different loctician, it causes damage to your roots and the dreads may fall out when they gain length.

You can check out various videos on youtube about it as well.  There are so many different ways and arguements about which is the right way, it will all leave you confused.  In my opinion the only thing you need is patience really, it takes a little while for them to do what you want.  And in my case that was pretty much whatever they wanted to do...lol if that makes sense.

Regarding the price of a loctician-call one in your area and ask how much they charge for a simple consultation.  It shouldn't be much, perhaps even free if you act like you are going to use them..lol
