What can I do ?
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:31:57 am »
Im over in the UK on a visitors visa for the next 6 months ... I am American ... Im still treatment naive but i feel my body succumbing to thins not even a full year after infection and have no idea what my numbers are currently ... Could i just be going through a "bad phase" right now or am i really rolling the dice not getting my numbers done ? would they do my numbers here under NHS ? and if i am really fucked up will they prescribe me any meds ? The alternative is flying back to America and "dying in line" ... Even if i got meds here how the hell would I continue them in the states with no healthcare ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks ...

I'd suggest that you go to your local hospital and go to the GUM clinic (genito-urinary medicine), get an appointment with an hiv doc and get some labs done. You'll probably have to go through being diagnosed again, unless you have paperwork with you that proves your prior diagnosis.

Getting labs done is definitely your first step - and you should have no problem having them done. Hiv is always taken care of here, regardless of your residency or visa status.

Don't put the cart before the horse by worrying about how you'll get meds back in the States. You might not even need meds yet - one step at a time!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
