question about OIs and HIV meds

my boyfriend recently told me he was HIV positive after being together for three years..so im still researching and figuring out what hes taking all the meds for and im also trying to figure out what exactly qualifies as an OI. Hes had shingles twice in the past 2 yrs and this january, he was in the hospital for about 2 wks with HIV fungal meningitis; when i got tested, i asked the HIV counselor if his meningitis was considered an OI and noone knew if it was. As for his meds, hes currently on Bactrum, Zithromax, Diflucan, Viramune, and Combivir. i know the viramune and combivir is for his HIV..but i guess im scared bc hes on so many meds and i dont really know exactly why and i cant even talk or vent to anyone bc he doesnt want anyone to know about his status. im sorry if this made no sense..i guess if anyone has taken the meds hes on..what was it for? and if anyone has any knowledge of OIs please share.

Why can't you ask your boyfriend what each medication is for?  Are you both not discussing his medical ins and outs?

The Bactrum serves as a preventative measure against PCP (type of pneumonia) infection.  Diflucan is often used to treat thrush or some other fungal infection -- so perhaps it's related to the meningtitis.  I think I took it once for a urinary tract infection in addition to thrush.  Zithromax is another anti-biotic so I'd guess it's for some ailment he's recently had.  And yes, meningitis is seen in HIV infected individuals, though I'm not sure I'd call in widespread.  Meningitis is a very serious thing though if one gets it so I trust he's staying on top of his treatment.

Overall I would say that five medications is not a lot for someone who has had his recent medical history.
