Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:10:34 pm »
Very strange story...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7522952.stm

NZ judge orders 'odd' name change

A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.
Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.
He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples.
Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay had been allowed.
One mother wanted to name her child O.crnia using text language, but was later persuaded to use Oceania, he said.

'Social handicap'
The ruling, in the city of New Plymouth on the North Island, was handed down in February but only made public now.  UNUSUAL NAMES
Allowed: Violence; Number 16 Bus Shelter; Midnight Chardonnay; Benson and Hedges (twins)
Blocked: Yeah Detroit; Stallion; Twisty Poi; Keenan Got Lucy; Sex Fruit; Fat Boy; Cinderella Beauty Blossom; Fish and Chips (twins)

The name issue emerged during a custody hearing for the young girl - who had refused to tell her friends her name and went simply by "K".
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," Judge Murfitt wrote.
"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's name has now been changed and the custody case resolved, court officials said.
New Zealand does not allow names that would cause offence or that are longer than 100 characters, Registrar-General Brian Clarke said.
Officials often tried to talk parents out of particularly unusual choices that could embarrass their offspring, the Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

What were they thinking, those parents.  They could have called the child Tahlulah but in reality it reminds me of a shopping day in Los Angeles.  A woman (overheard in one of the shopping malls) called her daughter "Vinyl Dinette"

Take my parents, they were too poor to afford nick names for all of us.  My older brother was commonly known as "Butch"  I have a younger sister who was called "Muff".  If they had enough money for a third nick name, I wonder what they would have called me?  ;D  Have the best day

Then there was the two guys who owned a bar together, they had the same first name.  They were known as "Big Dick" and "Little Dick" to their customers.  Little Dick probably would have preferred being known as "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" or... "Butch" but probably not Muff  ;D  Have the best day

While my father was still a police officer he met twins names Lemongello and Orangello.

No joke.

Guess mom really loved her jello.

I know a girl named Lucinda and I think that's a horrid name.  It sounds like a wicked witch's name.

I was talking about witch names yesterday.

No kidding!

I am Wendy of course. Wendy was a witch on the Casper cartoon. My son's current girlfriend's name is Sabrina. Sabrina played by Melissa Joan Hart was a character on the show Sabrina the teenaged witch.

When we lived down south, a family had a baby girl they named Athiest Revolution.

Micheal, speaking of nicknames, poor Mini is called "Bubba" and "Moo-buger".  It's funny to hear her friends yelling "moo-buger" acrossed the park - even funnier to hear her answer.

Explaination, but remember, you asked for it!

When she was born, she had 2 older brothers.  We were used to saying "bubba", so it stuck.  None of our boys is called bubba, but she is and will answer to it.

When Mini was born, we called her Mimi.  A friend of mine was also called Mimi, so wee one became mini-mimi, shortened to Mini (we still call her Mimi, and only here is she called Mini)  When she was a baby, she had TONS of issues including eating.  She couldn't coordinate suck-swallow with her bottle.  She would suck and suck until her mouth was full of formula, then let it run out.  BUT, she would chew her tongue - even as a newborn.  She looked like a cow chewing her cud, hence Moo-Moo.  I'm not sure when the booger got added - probably one of her brothers.

And, just to keep things confusing, we also call her "rooty-tooty boney bootie".  She's the only 1 who has a nick name..lol..maybe that's why she has so many.

Mum (who really did give her child a proper, but rather long, name)

I was in the Witch Store the other day.  It does not have any signs and is on a 1 lane dirt road but we have a witch store which serves Hoo Doo, Voo Doo and Wicca.  I was looking for some Valerian Root and really freaked the witches out.  ;D  Have the best day
Michael

Valerian is also called Vandal Root.  Its majikal reputation is evil and protective.  It can be used to jinx and hex and has been known for being secretly being placed in an enemys car causing them to wreck or the car to break down.  It can be wrapped in foil with a photo to stop fights and it is sold as a curio only.  It is also used as a calming tea

Why Thank You Lucas,

I have always wanted to do Stand Up but I have little attention span problems.  This comes from years of working in Advertising and having :60 or :30 to sing the praises of the Pearless Washerless Faucet and comedy requiring a 5 minute routine.

Being with about 50 friends in a basement bar, in San Francisco, with a cocktail in hand is the true definition of heaven on earth  ;D  Have the best day

I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!!!!

When I was a wee child, going to the Garden Street Elementary School, in Brewster, N.Y. the Chief Custodian there was named Richard Head, but of course, everyone called him Dick. He was actually cruel enough to name give his son the same name, albeit, with the suffix of "JR"

My brother (the one with the nick name Butch) had an identity crisis by age 12.  His proper given name was Richard, and he had outgrown Butch.

He didn't like Dick, couldn't stand Rich... after awhile he settled with the name Rick.  I forget if it was his second or third wife but she would stand at the back door saying "Rick" and it would sound like a squeaky, schrill thing.  Like the chalk board in school.  He could have been happy with Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.   ;D  Have the best day

Sabrina was also Samantha's (on "Bewitched") cousin.

Actually Sam's cousin was "Serena," but there was a "Sabrina" around the same time--she was the teen-aged witch from the "Archie" comics.
