Question about weight
« on: April 07, 2011, 12:33:41 pm »
I was dx October of last year. I have always been around 180-190 until infection, which time I dropped too 150. After being on meds since December, I am UD and I still need to get a copy of my paperwork from the DR. but according to him my cd4 count is around 460 up from 251. Well I am eatting healthy and have cut cokes from 4 or so a day to maybe 1 a day, lots of water and now jogging/walking 1-2 hours a day as well. Well my weight is staying at 160, is that normal for weight to not go back to what it was before infection, or possibility of something else going on my doc has been missing?

BTW since December, Isentress and Truvada

If you are exercising AND consuming fewer calories, maybe your new weight is the natural point for this lifestyle. Do you want to be heavier?

well doc did say that around 160-170 is healthy for a man 33 5'8, but I hate seeing myself and I feel that I should weigh more lol. I guess when I see him in May I will ask him again and we can see what my weight has been doing for past 4 months.. (again) I feel that I should weigh a little more, and while I do have a bit of a belly, my arms are thinner, legs are as well, and the belly just came back after starting meds. I am guess with the wasting (after infection and before meds) when I was dropping all the weight, I did lose it (and its back .sigh) but nothing else is getting any bigger, so was just wondering is all if weight gain can be and should be something to look forward too

You eliminated 450 calories a day cutting out 3 cans of coke and with 1-2 hours of walking that brings it up to 1000 calories less a day - assuming you were not so active before, when you weighed more.

If you want to put on some flesh it will have to be through calories but try to consume healthy ones. If you want to put on weight as muscle, I'm sure this is quite possible as well.

Sounds like its the thinness you find striking and unnatural.  So be prepared to discuss with the doctor what you really want - more meat (fat) or more muscle.

160 lbs is a perfectly acceptable weigh for a male who is 5'8" -- 180-190, unless you were a contestant for bodybuilding, is overweight... obese even.  Unless I suppose you're hanging out in bear bars. ::)

If I read correctly, Statichope likes himself on the chubby side.

This thread got me thinking and I just posted a new thread about how we think about our body type.

Anyway, if I were always one type of body, I might get unnerved by a change related to HIV.  We know its a concern when there are questions about wasting, lipo, very serious HIV related infections, etc.  We don't have all the details on the OP to go there.

Weight change can still be a legitimate concern in the absence of serious or obvious complications from the HIV or HAART.

I agree with you Miss P that statichope is at a good weight - but what if it doesn't "feel" right for some reason...

Not to be dismissed.

So you'd also endorse someone of an appropriate weight wishing to lose 30 lbs. and look anorexic?  Neither are particularly healthy, especially when you have HIV.  Your post really doesn't make much sense.

I was listening to the OP's expression that the change doesn't sit comfortably.
I agreed with you, before you posted in fact, that the current weight seems appropriate.

static,

that kinda happened to me too, i was at around 210, then I got sick in november and went down to 175, but i have put on a few more pounds about 182 now since i started meds, but i dont seem to ever go up from there.  Really i'm not complaining unless i start going down again.  My doc doesn't seem worried about it he just keeps an eye on it everytime i go in for a visit.

Well, Teddy is getting fat, so I'll give ya some of mine.  I was reading some BMI calculators online and they said at 6 feet tall, I would still be considered overweight if I got back to 185 pounds.  Overweight at 185lbs at 6 feet tall??  That is what I weighed in my profile pic, I believe.  That is overweight?  I am over 200 pounds now and considered obese according to these BMI calculators.

Yes, it seems you've cut calories and been working out.  I'm sure that explains the weight loss.  Drink a 12 pack of coke a day and you'll be fine.  Those Welch's Fruit Snacks (which are addictive) will put on the weight.  2 small packages are the same as one coke in calories and carbs.  I am so addicted to those things.  They are suppose to be made with 100% real fruit juices, so you'd think not too bad for ya.

My experience was it took a few years to regain normal weight fluctuation. That is, to regain your "before" weight and have that weight react as before to over eating or dieting. In a lot of cases, people actually have more of an issue keeping unwanted weight off, after a few years on treatment. It seems way to easy to gain weight and harder to keep it off, after time in the long run.
I too was worried about my under weight for a few years after my counts recovered on treatment. Now, I always feel like Im too fat for my own good and health. I miss the days when I was slim and trim. But having an illness to get there is not the answer, naturally.

Awesome, so what I have read and understand is that I am about right weight for my age and height, which is awesome too hear, I have dropped a few since the last time I went to the doc and that kinda got me worried. I do not mind being this size but only if its not because of something that is actively going on with my body that I am not aware of ya know. I was 180-190 for close to 2 decades, so its not that that is what I want, its more of well I am used to that and that is all I know, but if this is correct for me then I am VERY happy =).

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate it. Truth is I should have worded it differently or better so there wouldn't be as much confusion!

Weird. Some people seem to drop weight some gain after beginning treatment.  I weighed about 160 at 5'10 before I testes positive. After starting treatment I am now about 174.  No change in diet.  My weight has now stabalized.
Don't be fancy, just get dancey
