(Probably) A Silly Question On Organ Donation
« on: June 20, 2013, 12:13:34 am »
After searching online for about twenty minutes I couldn't find an answer to probably a stupid question:

I recently renewed my driver's license and opted to join the registry for organ donation.  Since then I obviously have found out I have HIV.  What I want to know is, do I have to manually remove myself from my state's organ donor registry?

I simply ask for the obvious reason of me not wanting to infect someone else in the event that something happens to me.  I assume that when my state is notified of my status that they would remove me, but I am just double checking that action is not required on my part.  If anyone knows, that would be great (I am an Illinois resident, in case that makes a difference).

Best answer I can find is call the DMV and let them know you are no longer interested .

If you Google the question specific to your state you will find what you need .

The direct number for the Illinois organ/tissue registry is 1-800-210-2106.  I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

Best of luck.

I talked this point with a doctor and she told me that despite you authorize to give your organs, they always make prooths to be sure that they wonīt appear any problem with a transplant, remember many people with HIV donīt even know they have it, also there are other health conditions that donīt make a transplant possible...  so in your case I would not be really worried, but for sure it would be better for your tranquility, if you can, to be removed form the list for organs donation...

An HIV test is always run along with a tissue compatability test. Still, since you are in the know, let the organ donor organization of your state know.
