Passeurs, the documentary .
« on: July 10, 2014, 01:32:15 pm »
Andy Velez has been in the trenches fighting for people with HIV from the beginning of the epidemic and still is working to this day to educate and make life better for all of us that live with this virus . Our community owes him a huge thank you for stepping up and making a difference in the course of this epidemic .

Andy was interviewed and featured in a documentary and I wanted to share it with you so that you can join me in thanking him for a lifetime of activism and service .

Below is a quote from Andy about the film .

The documentary is a portrait on an international level of people who have been involved in working in various ways in the epidemic for extended periods along with some newer faces like an activist from Nigeria whom I introduced to the director. Michael, who is out gay and HIV+,  had to flee Nigeria because his life was under threat. Africa, Europe, US (NY, SF, etc) are all represented.

Thank you, Jeff. Very much.

The movie will premiere at the Melbourne International AIDS Conference. Releases elsewhere are not set at this point but there's talk of getting into festivals like Tribeca, Berlin and Sundance. Stay tuned.

I'm on the way to Melbourne tomorrow morning.

XOXO to all.

And thanks again, Jeff.

thank you andy      Read a interview you did  on the ACTUP oral history Project. what a amazing man you are. I have to wonder where our community would be without your voice and the voices of others who lead the way, no only on the social issues but also on the medical side of it. You courage and determination serve as a inspiration to all. Once again thank you for all you have done.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems but it will annoy enough people to make it worthwhile.                              The point of the journey is not to arrive.

Sadly I won't be making it to this years IAC, I always catch up with Andy somewhere during that week, so I will miss out on seeing him again.

Have a great time Andy, I look forward to hearing all about it when you return.

Just want to say hello to all. Meeting so many great community people here.  And one local, Richard Keene, who is on my Liaison team is so great to work with and an endless source of information. We have managed to fit in some walkabouts which won't happen once the actual conference gets going on Sunday.

At the National Art Gallery there is an eye opening and stirring as well as erotic and in your face exhibition of the work of David McDermitt , an Australian artist lost to AIDS, who was previously unknown to me. Wonderful that his work is being acknowledged in conjunction with the conference.

Love to all. Matty I wish we were going to meet while I'm here. xoxo

That is awesome, it is beautiful down there. Keep us informed if/when it goes wider here in the states.

And dragging out my art history classes, my first declared major

What are the odds?

There is also a New York artist named David McDermitt, also positive, and still alive last I knew. A contemporary with Keith Haring, he did multimedia pop art portraits in 20s-30s costume.

Spelling of David's surname is incorrect should read "David McDiarmid".
