Risk?
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:29:46 am »
I am a heterosexual male that is in a long-term relationship with my girlfriend.  Unfortunately, I am one of the dogs that strayed.  I recently had a female of unknown HIV status perform oral sex on me.  We did not use a condom.  While she was doing this, I was fingering her.  I then masturbated with the same hand I was using to finger her.  I am concerned I may have put myself at risk.  It's been over a week now and I am afraid to have sex with my girlfriend.  I do not want to pass a risk on to her.

I seem to have contracted a UTI from this and am currently taking antibiotics.  In reading the forum, I assume my risk for HIV is negligible but wanted your advice.  Do I need to get tested for this?  Could HIV piggyback with the bacteria that caused by UTI?  Is it OK to have unprotected sex with my girlfriend?  Before this incident, I know she and I were both HIV negative.  We had been tested.

You were never at risk of contracting HIV in the situations you've provided.

Clarity,

To be clear, getting a blowjob with or without a condom is not a risk for hiv infection.

Fingering is also not a risk. Neither is using the same hand that you fingered with to jack off or otherwise touch your penis. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus. Sexually speaking, it's only transmitted during unprotected anal or vaginal INTERCOURSE.

You did not have a risk and you don't need to test.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

RapidRod and Ann,

Thank you so much for your quick responses.  I really appreciate them and they have helped ease my mind.  So, you don't think having the UTI increases the risk at all?  I promise I will not deluge you with a lot of "what ifs".

No, having UTI and a no risk issues doesn't increase your risk.

Clairty,

Having a PRE-EXISTING UTI may increase your risk if you'd had UNPROTECTED INTERCOURSE, but as none of the situations you present are risks in the first place, the UTI does not change our hiv risk assessment at all, whether pre-existing or not.

NO RISK.

I really appreciate your replies.  The logical part of me understands that this was a no-risk situation.  However, the guilt and anxiety tend to override the logical part at times.  It has now been almost four weeks since the incident.  I swear I have had every symptom, including a slight fever, muscle cramps, joint pain and headaches.

I know symptoms mean nothing, but can anxiety and guilt cause these things?  I'm sure you had heard it all before and just wanted to know if this is "normal".  Thank you!

Clarity,

Anxiety and guilt certainly can cause bodily symptoms. So can a lot of other illnesses, besides hiv. If you continue to feel unwell, see your doctor. If you continue to feel guilty and anxious, see a counselor. We cannot help you with your feelings of guilt here.

You didn't have a risk for hiv infection. Whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv.
