Atripla - how long to kick in?
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:46:45 pm »
My dad is on his 4th day of Atripla.  He is very sick and 67,  (cd4 51, viral load >500000),  my biggest concern is getting him to eat.  Its hard to get 1000 calories per day in him.   To those of you that have been very sick,  how long did it take to start to want to eat again? Thanks for your help.

Hello runnergal - It will take a few weeks for the Atripla to start kicking the HIV Virus. Would your dad be open to the idea of smoking some weed to boost his appetite?

My appetite returned after about 2 weeks on Atripla.  At the one month mark my VL had decreased from 700,000 to 4580, but my CD4 hadn't budged much.  This is not going to be a quick process, but over time he should get better, you're just going to have to be patient for a while.

I wish I could get my hands on pot,  although my dad is old-fashioned (he really doesn't even understand what HIV/AIDS is and the unfortunate stigma...),   so I am not sure he would smoke pot.  Can it be prescribed as a pill?  I am happy to read that a few weeks and he will become a little more hungry.  I have noticed he more alert and the dementia is fading already, thank goodness.  Thanks for your feedback!

Yes it comes in a pill but it I understand that it is not as good as the real thing.

You could always bake it into brownies, although making him eat pot without his knowledge sounds like a set up for a stoner movie.

When I lost my appetite I took astragalus in tincture form which I bought cheaply from a health food store. Within a couple of days my tummy was soon rumbling and telling me to eat more!

Hello Runnergal,

Your father's doctor could prescribe Megace in liquid form. It is indicated for cancer and AIDS patients with wasting and appetite issues, probably not at cheap option if not covered by health plan.
good luck,
V.
