The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

I was just curious and my unofficial tally at this point is Vegas 9; New Orleans 9, and London 6.

Three more for London and we will temporarily have a 3 way tie.

...and if it wasn't for 3 ways I would not be on this forum right now  :o  :-\  ;)

Wagner, you're new to the site so I'll give you some leeway here.

Still, your comment about Ann is what I call a potstirrer, the sort of whatever from which no good is likely to come.

Just stick with the purpose of this thread if you will -- indicating which city you prefer, rather than raking up.

Thanks for your cooperation.

If everybody else is having their hubby and BF vote, then I will too.

Sid votes for Vegas.

Yes -- he is planning to come this time.  He wanted my first AMG to be all about me, so he stayed home.

Which is a good thing, because he knows Boston even better than I do, so he probably would have won the scavenger hunt, if we weren't on the same team.......

Add Santiago to the list of Hubby's voting for Vegas. He's not a member of the Forums, but he has attended AMG twice (under my supervision, of course!)

Wow...today seems like husband day....if so then lodge another vote for London from my other half.  Both of us were at AMG Boston so they are both valid votes.   :)  He would post himself but is too busy with school...

I know I'm going to catch hell from this one way or another. Can you all make just one thing easy  ::)

This whole husband/spouse thing is getting out of control.

The only way i can think to curtail this and avoid having the votes skewed is to prohibit voting to those who actually have a screen name at AidsMeds.com.

Another option would be to allow a spouse to vote ONLY if they have attended a prior AMG (that is if they don't have a screen name.)

My recommendation so there can be no accusations of poll skewing is to have your partner sign up with AidsMeds.com to cast their vote.

If not, than I'm just going to cast my entire family's vote and AMG will be in my backyard next year. ;D

I would love to visit any of the proposed cities, and I think at some point, we will.

But, in the meantime, I will cast my one vote for:

Las Vegas

unaudited, unofficial, non-certified, non-KPMG approved numbers so far:

Vegas - 16
London -16
New Orleans -10

...I just got home from Sox game and my head is spinning a little so the numbers are in no way presented as either accurate or official.  Someone needs to determine which "spouse" votes count and double check the math but I think that is what they are at the moment.  Perhaps to get the "winner" a poll can be created on October 9'th with the top two and each screen-name would be allowed 1 vote?

11:17 Update...Aztecan voted as I was posting....I think the new number would be Vegas 17, London 16, NO -10.  If anyone is up to it please do a count and confirm.

A final and official count will be suplied upon the end of voting.

Until further discussion, I have not included votes of anyone who is not a registered member of AidsMeds. That includes husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, fb, dogs, cats, goldfish, etc.

D- If you're tracking the vote via a spreadsheet, it would be helpful to post that in advance of the end of voting...such that any discrepancies can be addressed prior to the end of voting.

I understand that I have never been to a AMG, but wouldn't a fairer system be for there to each member and their household.

In that way, members who are single have an equal vote to others.

I'm fine with NOT counting non-members -- in fact, I thought that only members could vote -- that is why I only had my vote originally.  Thanks for clarifying.
As for one vote per household -- I don't agree with that.  If there are 2 members living together, they should get 2 votes.

So how to resolve this as to prevent any skewing of the numbers.

Because I've met them at prior AMG's I know Basqo's partner, Mini, and Ric and Nico's partner.
Do we allow their votes to be counted even though they are not registered members?

Of course this would allow anyone to come into this thread and cast two votes to include their significant other.

I'm fine either way, as long as there some sort of concensus among members.

If we go with registered members-only voting, that means that Mum gets a vote but Mini doesn't.

Hmmm.... well, I was talking to my bf the other night and again last night about the AMG and he said he'd like to go - if it were in New Orleans. My number one vote would still be with London - however, I would also like to go if it were in NO. Neither one of us has the least interest in Las Vegas. (He's been there and would rather see somewhere else, and Vegas has never held any attraction for me. If we're going to travel half-way around the world, and he has to worry about bringing meds in, then we want to go somewhere we want to go, if you see what I mean.)

So, he's interested in going and would like to vote for NO. Can he vote when it doesn't "add weight", so to speak, to my vote?

It would be kinda silly for him to get an account - he's absolutely computer-phobic and I would have to do it all for him anyway, from my computer. (he obviously doesn't have one!) He hears about you guys all the time from me though, so he feels like he knows some of you already. ;)

It's dangerous to start changing the vote process, mid-vote.  I don't really see any significant harm in the voting process thus far.  If people believe that voting manipulation is happening due to people casting multiple votes, asking folks to set up a forum account just to vote is unlikely to be much of a deterrent.

I am absolutely against only allowing partner votes for people we know.  That closes off the process to potential new attendees at AMG and also unfairly skews the voting towards Las Vegas.

I do think Carousel's point about one vote per household does raise an interesting point.  But ultimately, I'd rather just keep things the way they are now and make any changes effective for any future voting.

I see your point.

However, allow me to go on record as saying I am only responsible for tallying the votes, and not who or how they vote.

Voting will continue this year without any change to the process.

I think you need to clarify exactly who can vote for the AMG location, because it has always been limited to members only voting on a location.  If you start adding spouses and whatnot, you may get skewed votes that will not represent what the forum members want.  I would think that limiting votes to one per member, or one to a family unit, would be the fairest way to count.  The way it is, you can have a family unit with three votes, to my one and that is hardly representative.  I think we should address this and do it now and get it in writing.

So, does that mean non-member spouses/family members can vote or only members vote?

If non-members did vote in the past, I'm wondering -- if you still had prior years spreadsheets, did their vote ultimately swing the results to a different conclusion than if only members were counted?  Not sure if that is feasible to look into, but might at least put some context around the "bigness" of the issue.

I think it would be hard to say "members only", because then you can just have folks register and you have the same result.  If you say one per household/family, then you knock out a member vote from households with 2 members.  In the end, I guess there isn't a "perfect" scenario, and if things have worked one way these past 5 years, maybe leaving well enough alone makes the most sense.

My understanding has always been that each member has a vote and I propose that it remain that way and for those who are in a family unit, which means anymore than one (members or not), also gets one vote as a family unit.  It does not seem fair to me, for a non-member partner to have the same vote as an actual member here.  This would be easy to administer and a single member vote, will count the same as any family unit.  This is not an issue of swinging a vote, but of having the people who actually attend AMG, voting on where it will be held.

Whether you change the actual voting rules or not, you still need to definitively state who can vote.

With the exception of a couple of well known members here who have attended AMG's in the past, this has never been an issue.

Also, the voting for choice of destination has typically not been as close as it is this year. That's why I foresaw it as possibly being a problem this year. More people are wanting to vote by proxy for their significant other. However, I see Cliff's point about changing protocol midway through the vote.

So, how do we deal with this?

If we say members only, are people likely to sign up just to vote? In my opinion this is not likely. If being affected by HIV was not motivation enough to sign up, I don't think AMG is going to be either (I don't mean this as cruel as it sounds.)

Another option may be giving a members, non-member spouse only 1/4 of a vote.

I'll guess we'll let this discussion continue.

This seems really simple to me, because the name of the "gatherings" is formally AMG, or AIDS meds Gatherings.  That would suggest that registered members of this site are fully qualified and invited to this event, and to allow those who are not registered opens it up to the universe.  Not particularly fair in my book.

However, if you all decide to let anyone in the household vote, then I will certainly register my husband's vote since this is possibly the first one he might think about going to if it is held in Las Vegas.  Neither one of us will even cross the border of Texas or any states east of there, so New Orleans is simply out of the question.  (HATE hurricanes, and sopping humidty)

Sorry, I still have a problem with giving any non-member a vote, because then you are penalizing anyone without a family, because a family unit vote would be worth at least 1 & 1/4 votes vs. 1 for a single member.  And I'll be both brutal and honest in saying that I resent the possibility that the boyfriend of the month's vote would count the same as mine.  I don't think so.

Of those who have voiced their opinion on this issue, there has only been one opposition to limiting voting to members only.

Should we give this more time for discussion or continue on with the terms that voting is only open to registered members?

Time usually is a good idea, but in this voting thread.......   I don't know.  If I were in your shoes, I would probably create another thread to really dig into this......... then if this voting thread needs to be changed accordingly, it would be easy to either add or subtract the votes of non-registered members.

I'm in the same postion as Ann with my spouse, he is completely computer ignorant.  Still, he knows all of you.

I want to be clear here, I am not in favor of non-registered members voting for a members only site.  This of course would be a problem for those "married" people who consider the marriage sacrosanct and the vote of one naturally assumes the partner gets a vote also.  Marriage and registered members are two unrelated subjects altogether.

If the goal is to maximize AMG attendance, then it seems reasonable that we count numbers of those who sincerely intend to attend. We can do this by invoking an honor system among ourselves.

Let's not vote if you really have no interest in attending just to skew location.

Let's VOTE honestly about where you'd really prefer to go, especially if you're hoping to attend.

however, My impression is that AMG gatherings are so special because you gather ... no matter where it's held.

Personally, I think it's fair to only give a vote to folks that either have attended the event or are active members (i.e. post on these boards). I'm relatively new here but I look forward to attending the next AMG event.

I'll go to New Orleans to see you guys, but it's hard work for me.  Las Vegas is a three day city.

Final votes:

1.  Chicago, because I've never seen it right without butt high snow

2.  Las Vegas, because Jan would go

3.  New Orleans, I'm skeered but let's see how it goes

I'm not quite sure how to read your vote. Chicago isn't an option at this stage of the game.

So, the choices you get to pick from are Las Vegas, London, or New Orleans. But only one!

My bad.  I'm always so far behind in a conversation here that even reading 70-75 messages before speaking up I still manage to step in it.

Tell me where to show up next summer.

70 to 75?!?  i can't finish 7.5 in an hour.  anyway, chicago is a perfectly lovely city so i do not believe you stepped in anything.  this is the AM forums, not JAMA!

'though it appears new orleans is out of the running this year (or any year with a digit in it) my provincial jingoism (jingoistic provincialism?) simply forces me to inquire/post/babble.

...
3.  New Orleans, I'm skeered but let's see how it goes

scared of what?  heat stroke?  crime?  the fact many bars are open 24/7/365.25 so no one tells you to go home at a reasonable hour (except police on horses at midnight between Mardi Gras & Ash Wednesday but if you're in a bar you can stay in until street revelers are encouraged to go home)?   or just getting here would be out of your budget?  any other location besides here and baton rouge is out for me and i wouldn't be caught dead in baton rouge so i understand financial considerations.

regardless of southern etiquette (i guess northern, eastern, & western, too?) about white post labor day in new orleenz (in honor of our midwestern forum members... ;->  ) light-weight 100% cotton clothes of the lightest color are de rigueur year-round, during daylight at least.   leather queens must have their sweat glands removed to wear pants, chaps, jackets, even vests except about 5 - 10 days a year when both heat and humidity are very low.  a former source of bar-plopping amusement for me and my friend al was some of the "fall/winter" clothes guys insisted on wearing -- sweaters, leather jackets, long wool pants, calf-length boots (i had a pair and wore them about twice a year until they dry-rotted -- my nancy sinatra phase).

media sensationalism about crime in new orleans frequently omits details such as the population is still about 200,000 fewer than before katrina so stats get skewed without adjustment.  besides, as has been the case for at least 30 - 50 years, the vast number of violent crimes occur in easily distinguishable geographic areas.  the common traits are poverty, drugs, gang violence, etc. -- very few locals would go to those areas even in daylight.   as with other urban areas visitors should be careful about following safety tips and information.

my 13 cats & i vote for new orleans.  i'm a bisexual platonic bestial polygamist & they are all consenting adults so in the interest of inclusion and fairness i believe all 14 of our votes should be counted.  who are we to judge others lifestyle choices?  who are we to use such revolting phrases as "lifestyle choices?"

I'm scared of NO, too... of the humidity (and heat) and mosquitoes.  I bet they aren't any worse than here, which are two reasons I don't like doing much at home in the summer.  If I've got to deal with heat, give me dry heat any day!

I've tried to attend a couple of AMG's but because of time constraints, distance, money etc, I've not been able to attend. As I'll be 'up north' during that time I could likely attend. I have family in London that I could stay with as well.

So I vote for

For those who are confused and obviously want to stir up trouble, I request that you please view each and every post within a thread to gain the full picture of what is occuring.

I clearly stated in post 375 that I was extending the vote 10 days due to the poll to discuss voting procedures, which occured in the middle of the vote. The vote lasted 10 days, therefore voting was extended 10 days.

Is this confusing? No, I think not! Biased? Again...I think not. Another reason for some to want to cause some sort of drama? Obviously!

If you scroll through the history of the AMG threads you will also note that votes and other decisions have been extended in the past, for whatever reason. You didn't seem to have a problem with it then, so why now?

I was legitimately confused.  It would be nice if you could accept this instead of pointing fingers about what the motivation is.  Thanks.

The average poster would usually reference the first post for the end date.  If that changed later perhaps in addition to a statement halfway through the thread you could have additionally added a notation at the end of the opening post.  Thanks again.

I was replying more to the accusation from another member. Not so much you, Miss P.

I apologige for expecting everyone to do their own due dilligence and actually read the posts within the thread they are posting to or questioning. Perhaps this is the school teacher coming out in me. I unfortunately don't have time to hold everyone's hand or send personal emails. And unfortunatley I don't have the ability to modify a post after a certain time frame.

However, the information in question was posted for everyone to read, in an appropriate area, at the appropriate time.

Legitimate confusion and/or questions I understand. Blatant accusations are completely uncalled for.

I'm afraid I am still confused at the reason for extending the vote to 19th.

I've read the explanation, but it does not sound very convincing to me.

It feels that the procedure is being changed as we go.

You know, I shouldn't be surprised, yet I am.  The AMG Coordinator asked back on 9/18 if we should run a poll on who should vote (members only was the conclusion) and then extend voting a few days.  The only real opinions expressed on the extension were to do so.  So, he did and now we have folks bitching about it.  The coordinator is in a "damned if he does, damned if doesn't" situation.  Why don't we all act like adults, stop with wth conspiracy theories here and assume a little positive intent on the part of the VOLUNTEER coordinator.  If you didn't think the vote should be extended, then you should have said so when he asked about it 3 weeks ago.

While, I personally didn't see a need for the extension, I have confidence that the Coordinator is only doing what he thinks is best, based on input in this thread.

I know that my post was not meant to be bitchy, but was just trying to raise some concerns.   It's seems that, statements seem to be made in the middle of threads that may be referring to other threads, which makes in confusing.  Well for me anyway.

From my reading, the decision to extend it appears in one thread, but I don't see where there was a call from members to extend the vote in that or in any other of these threads.  If there was, can someone guide me to it?

Sorry, but it confuses me why there is an extension, that is all.

I really don't see any childish behavior.  Just people expressing their opinions (even if a bit late, but then not everyone checks this thread/forum on a daily/weekly basis).

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't recall anyone asking for (or even giving) opinions about extending the vote for 10 days.  Had I been I asked, I would have said no as there was no interruption in the voting process, (which is the only justification I can see for extending a vote).  Having said that, what's done is done and extending the vote probably wouldn't change the end result, so I'm not too fussed over the issue.

But I certainly see nothing wrong with people expressing their views about that matter.

In a thread where the OP is asking for a vote, you can't expect your average reader to go through three pages of bitchy homosexuals just to vote, which is why I suggested attaching a summary of important developments as a "post script" at the bottom of the first post.  It's rather normal netiquette on a message board to do this with an important voting thread, but my request for this was dismissed evidently.

And unfortunatley I don't have the ability to modify a post after a certain time frame.

Fortunately, I do have that ability as you well know. I've been happy to alter AMG posts for you in the past and I'm still happy to do it. I would have thought you realised that. ::)

Ann,

I realize this. However, I apparently made the mistake that people read before they post. Silly me!

I do appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I didn't think this was that big of a deal. Again...silly me.

I'll defend myself here, for the last.

Plain and simple. This thread, or any thread within aidsmeds.com does NOT only consist of the first post. A thread should be read in it's entirety. Simply put, read the first post, the last post, as well as those in between to get the entire scope of what is being discussed, as well as any last minute information related to said topic.

If information is posted within a thread and you choose not read it, that is not my fault. I have seen many of you dig back through years of members posts to dig up just one single comment someone made. So, I find it hard to imagine that you would miss my post about the extension.

Would you all be happy if I announced right here, right now that AMG will be held in London. If this is what the group wants, than I will glady announce it TODAY.

This is your AMG. Take some responsibility and read the information that is supplied by the coordinators. Which by the way, has already been pointed out is done on a volunteer basis.

To prevent any further going back and forth about the issue. And, since I am damned regardless of what I do...

AMG 2010 will be held in London

The next step now is to choose a coordinator. As I mentioned back in September, if AMG is in Europe, than someone from Europe would be best suited for the role as AMG Coordinator. I will be more than happy to offer any guidance to the new team.

So be it!

When AMG 2005 launched this annual event, I recall that we had about 20 attendees.  Let us hope that AMG 2010 has the same number.

I nominate Cliff to be AMG Coordinator for AMG 2010 London.

I would like to personally thank RAB and Dennis for their combined years of volunteer service for the benefit of AMG.

Respectfully, Ric

You guys can be absolutely absurd sometimes.  Seriously, I am amazed at how manipulative, covert-aggressive and just down right silly you guys can be.  Ric, I suggest you rethink your statements before you make this personal, with your obvious intimidation tactics.

Cliff, I rethought my statements before I hit the post button.  And they still stand.

I certainly see nothing wrong with people expressing their views about that matter.

Just another forum member "expressing their views".

And, how did I make this "personal"?

Did it ever occur to any of you to have two 2010 AMGs???  London and Las Vegas.

This has been discussed. Some are for two AMGs it and some against it.

In previous threads I mentioned that even if the official AMG was in Europe next year, there would probably still be some sort of gathering in the U.S. I was chastised for that comment as well.

I hope after all the rallying our European friends have put forth to officially vote for a European AMG, that they take the necessary steps to ensure it's success. I wish them nothing but success.

OK, last try here.  AMG is our function period.  If we want to have two or twenty each year, that is our decision.  Economics is a real consideration here and I think having two AMGs would be excellent.  It involves posting exactly two threads.  One for London, the other for Las Vegas.  Sign up for the location you want and then that group picks a coordinator and poof two AMGs.

How fucking hard can that be?  Really folks, get a grip and remember why we do this.

So, what about HUGO (angelofdreams)?

hey all,

i know this has been brought up multiple times but still,
as some one living in the UK and not being able to travel to the USA or for this mather Mexico i would like to explore the options of a meeting in London.
I am aware of the large number of members on the site in the same position as myself and how much we would love to come to the AGM we just dont have the chance for what ever personal or even sometimes financial reason.

As a event manager from trade i would love to set up a meeting for people living in Europe aswell as in other parts of the world, giving everyone the option of being there.
So i would love to hear from you all regarding idea's, comments, etc.

you can email them directly to me or trowe them in the forum

xx
hugo

Also, what about the dates?  Traditionally, off-season (Oct-Mar) offers the lowest fares from the US to Europe.

Since I don't want to even continue this thread, I have started a new one to discuss two AMGs in 2010.  So please stop by and lend your support.

So what city was decided?  I see something about a Las Vegas gathering but I've been out of the country for a few weeks.
