Look here Chm, just because you have a degree in psych, as do a few other forum members, that doesn't make you the end-all.  The people I know who have degrees in psych who are the most successful, make the most sense, and are the most useful, are those who have life experience to match their degree (in other words, they also have "common sense" to back up what they say-not just "book sense," which is apparently the only quality you have).

If I were to be put on an antidepressant, and I'm in the class they don't work for, then the drug to me is "useless."  That's common sense.
I've never killed anyone, but I frequently get satisfaction reading the obituary notices.-Clarence Darrow

"Common sense" is generally wrong - a fact that 4,000 years of Western intellectual effort heartily agrees upon.

If I were to be put on an antidepressant, and I'm in the class they don't work for, then the drug to me is "useless."  That's common sense.

Precisely the point I made earlier. I'm glad you agree.

Edited to include:

For me, the truth remains that if you buy into the article as it is written, then you must accept that missing premise. You must accept that "Drugs which are effective for only a small population are mostly useless."
For me, this is a morally abhorant statement. It is the very rationale used by "Big Pharma" to deny lifesaving drugs to populations deemed too small/marginalized/insignificant to bother dealing with.

I don't know why you would.... I've tried to avoid the ad hominem, and stick to the point I'm trying to make about the bias in the article.
Antidepressants have literally saved my life. You can imagine how irksome it is when so many are so eager to jump on the popular anti-antidepressant bandwagon, especially by backing such a clearly biased and unscientific article.
How would you feel dealing with the popular (i.e. ignorant) wave of sentiment against any lifesaving medication you happened to be on?

ch,

It just seemed to me that things were getting a little heated and I tried to inject some levity. Are you sure you wouldn't like a chill pill? I have them in some very palatable flavours. ;D

I think too much importance is being given to an article which appeared in the popular press. They over-simplify every single last medical thing they get their hands on and the subject of antidepressants is no different.

Personally, I shy away from antidepressants. However, I wouldn't dream of giving a hard time to someone who used them with success. Whatever works, eh?

I find it funny that SciFi rules the day again.  WHAT?  You may ask...

When Star Trek first appeared on TV, Dr. McCoy aka Bones, was always telling people, eat right and exercise is the best for anything.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for taking whatever the doctor tells me.  Its his job to know, not mine.  My job is to eat right, stay active and take what I'm told in the hopes that I'll outlive my relatives and the people I don't like.  Nothing better than outliving those that have pissed you off in life, you get the last word.

Bubba hugs!!

I have to agree with most of the posts here. I have a chemical imbalance, a true chemical imbalance and the medications are a life saver for me. I take a handful a day and cannot immagine my life without them. I would be in a whole or on the roof. God knows I have been in both places before. The thing is too many people are being given drugs that do not have true chemical imbalances. How can you compare anyone to the other. Even the perscribing of drugs is a hit and miss challange. It has taken years for me to find the correct cocktail of drugs that works for me. This is more of an art than a science at this time. I for one do not think that we can just put us all in one category. As for exercise and eating right. Hell I know it is the best thing for me but it is just not possible when you are in that whole when you cannot get out of that hole. The medication gets me out of the house gets me focused on work and keeps me going. Without it I know I would be in an institution, or dead.

I gotta say this every time a newspaper article talks about scientific research (warning..rant coming) - BEWARE OF THE SCIENCE JOURNALISTS!  Some of them don't even have a science degree, and do not understand how to interpret and evaluate scientific research properly

Not all research is good research.  It takes a trained professional (and preferably one who specialises in the field of the article they are reading) to properly understand and interpret the results and evaluate the merits a study.

An example I can give you (and I think I've said this before) - do you remember the HRT scandal?  HRT GIVES YOU BREAST AND OVARIAN CANCER.  That was the most outrageous and irresponsible journalism ever.  It was infuriating.  And FALSE.  Firstly, the result wasn't statistically significant (which means that the difference between the groups was not significant enough to be credited to anything other than chance)  and secondly, they misrepresented it.  Estrogen therapy will only hasten the progression of an already EXISTING breast cancer and only IF that breast cancer is estrogen receptor positive.   NO cause at all.  Hundreds of thousands of women stopped taking their HRT because of this and would have experienced negative health effects because of it all because journalists cant be bothered or are incapable of understanding scientific research.

I know that was off topic but I'm just trying to give an example that shows how these people cannot be relied upon.

I have a long history of depression (well I'm only 24 so I guess that 7 years is long for my age??) and I read a few studies (by non-affiliated, government funded researchers) on the benefits of SSRIs (the new generation of antidepressants), therapy, and combined on depression and the consensus is (for MOST people, there will always be people who react badly to psychotropics) that they work as a monotherapy, and that therapy also works.  But that therapy and antidepressants combined work best of all because you are treating the here and now problem (wow i feel crap i just need something to take the edge off so I can manage to get through my day) and also the CAUSE (in therapy).  I've never been good with therapy, but there were times that ADs saved my life just like Peter.

If this stuff really worries you, try to speak to a doctor you trust, one that you know has no affiliations with drug companies etc.  I'm sure in America that is hard as (from what I have gathered) your health industry is in bed with the pharmaceutical companies but still, don't believe the hype!!!

Cheers!
Anna
