Coinfected with Cirrhosis stage 4
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:36:06 pm »
Hello-

I have a friend who is co-infected with hiv and hep c.  The doctors said his liver is so shot that there's no sense for hep c treatment.  He is being released from the hospital with post care from nurse and girlfriend.  Any suggestions on what he can have, food wise, or teas?

Also, he has been off his hiv meds for months now.  Any sense putting him on a new regimen?

Thank you

Im sorry to hear about your friend.

I'd look into the merits of milk thistle for the liver. A friend of mine had hep c and used it for his liver, not prescribed by docs, and he says it helped. Sorry, but I really dont have any science to back it up, but Id look into it. Im sure some one else will weigh in on the merits of milk thistle.

You might want to make sure his care givers have some support as well.

I hope things get better for you all.

There are people with HIV who have had liver transplants, including well-known activist/writer Larry Kramer. Is this the next step for your friend?

Are the doctors saying he should be off HIV meds?

Inchlingblue-  He cannot be a candidate for a liver transplant, because his years of drinking would preclude him of such an operation.  He's home now with full support from his girlfriend and close friends.

He will be seeing his ID doctor in a week.  I don't know what she will tell him but I know it won't be great  I think it's just waiting.  He scored a 13 on the Child-Pugh evaluation for liver failure.

If detoxifying teas and a strict diet (low salt and juicing) can give him a little more time, then it's worth the effort.  I will keep you posted on what his ID feels about continuing treatment.
