A CD4 of 85 is pretty low, and would justify starting meds by any standard.  Technically, I think a CD4 of less than 200 constitutes AIDS, but that distinction doesn't really mean that much anymore, with the advent of HAART.  I dropped to 166 before I started meds, so technically I have "full blown AIDS," but, as far as I'm concerned, it's really no different from being HIV-positive now that I'm above 200.

What is important for anyone with a CD4 of 85 is to get on meds as soon as possible.  And your husband  should be able to get straight answers from his doctor.  If you're not getting straight answers, you need to look at getting a new doctor.

Just a suggestion, perhaps you should bring a notebook with you to the next appointment and write down exactly what the doctor says.  Some docs are just not good at putting their thoughts into laymans terms so what may seem like not giving you a straight answer is really a communication problem.  If you have it written down, you can look things up or have someone else help you with it.
