It's a BOY!
« on: June 17, 2007, 09:35:09 pm »
Hi Everyone. Just wanted to post a couple of pics of our newborn. He is 2 days old in these pictures. We are thinking of naming him Tahoe. What do you thinK? He is a gunmetal gray color....and ears galore. His mother (Ursla) is the brown llama in the second picture.......and the brown and white llama is Auntie Calypso.
 ;D......with Pride,
Mike

Tahoe is an unusual name; isn't that a lake? Does it have a special meaning?

Yes Melia, TAHOE is the name of a lake. No special significance to me other than it's a special place, I like the sound of this word,  and hopfully it's not overused in the llama registry association listings. Just when you think you've pick a name that is cool, a search of the listings reveals there are 50 llamas with same name or used within a name. Frustrating. So we are still tossing names about ............but this one pleases us nicely.
xxx,
Mike

P.S. Just checked the registry listings. There are 25 or more llamas with name Tahoe as part of name. Sheesh!

Llama + Alpaca?  Oh, it's being done. A couple of years ago, a well-known, upscale Alpaca & Llama farm/breeder was busted for trying to register a "mix" as pure llama genetics.............seems the required DNA testing proved the cria was fathered by the breeders stud alpaca. The animal itself was a beautiful creature. The deception was scandalous. (hee hee) She said it was unintentional and she was unaware her alpaca bred with her prized female llama. Yeah, right.
One wonders where these Suri llamas are coming from all of a sudden. They're just flooding the market now and their wool is as fine & soft as can be.
I am hoping we can rescue an alpaca or two in the future. Expensive little things, those alpacas.  I'd love to mix the wools to achieve a softer texture than our llamas are capable of producing. Half of our girls and all the boys have a fair amount of guard hair and as you know, guard hair is coarse and can't be separated easily (if at all).
xxx,
Mike

Well Mark you probably know as well as I do that you don't keep your females in the same paddocks with intact males..there is no way you can control the breeding programme if you do..I call BS on that one.

I only have two females and my boys are all wetheres so we can keep them in the same paddock..and when it's time to breed we bring in a good stud from a neighbouring farm.

We seem to be getting more Suri breeders here also..their blankets are just beautiful and the softest I've ever felt..certainly softer than Merino sheep wool.

We only use the top blanket and top neck fleece..the leg and under neck gets thrown away, but we only sell to spinners, there are not enough Alpacas farmers in NZ, as you know we only shear them once a year, so you would need to have huge herds to get enough wool to export...so I don't think we will ever be able to rely on our Aplaca wool exports.

Let us know what name you decide on.

I inquired with one of our friends and here is what Kathy wrote to me: "Here is a picture of Magnifire. He is a Llama/Alpaca Cross.  Originally, he was registered as a llama, a suri llama.  But, when they found out the truth, all the offspring of Magnifire had to have their registrations taken back and then re-issued as a Llama/Alpaca cross.  It was a HUGE mess and so many people were so angry because they had bred their crias sired by Magnifire and had to go back to the people who bought the babies and tell them they weren't llamas at all, they were a llama/alpaca cross.  There were lawsuits flying everywhere."

xxx,
Mike

P.S. Named our cria Maximus Prime for registry. "Max" in the bardyard.  :)
