First Time-displaying early symptoms
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:37:10 pm »
Hi all,

I had anal sex with an uninfected partner with protection about 4 weeks ago. This was a one time thing and I have had only 1 other partner for a 1 night stand with protection as well about 1 year ago.

Thursday I experienced some nausea in the evening. HOWEVER, I did eat quite a bit throughout the day, worked out then proceeded to drink a protein shake IMMEDIATELY (as in 1min after leaving the gym) which caused me to feel nauseous and vomit some of the shake out as well as part of the meal I had earlier in the day. I went to bed at 9pm, woke up at 2am covered in sweat with some pain in my back and joints. I did fall asleep on my couch in a strange position. I did not fall back asleep until 3:30am and woke up again at 5:30 am to fall back asleep until 7:30 at which point I had to get ready for work.

Friday morning I was severly fatigued, had aches in my joints, and had a minor headache. I could not focus at work.
Saturday, there was still some pain in the joints, and I was sweating throughout the day, still some fatigue but no fever (as in dry cough, sore throat, running/stuffed nose). While I did sweat at night, I was not shivering at any point which usually happens to me when I have a fever (jumps between sweating to shivering often). I took some advil to help with the joint pain and it did help.

Yesterday/today, still expericing the night sweats but no pain, no fever, no other nauseaous feelings.

Other tidbits: I use marijuana on a daily basis but NO other drugs (often I have a hard time eating or feel nauseous from eating even a little if I have not smoked). Stool has been relatively solid since Thursday (had some mixed solid/watery stools today).
I do not see any immediate swelling of lymph nodes or any lesions in the mouth. I also have not seen any rashes on my body that would resemble those of an early HIV infection.
Last bit: Since last wednesday until yesterday, I was pretty stressed about work. I have a lot of work that needed to be done which did not finish until yesterday. Thursday night in bed all I could think about was my work project.

My question to you all is, are these signs/symptoms something serious or just work related stress/bad sleeping habits thats causing these issues? My partner tested themselves on April 2 and was Negative (no STI/STDs at all).
I have read that work related stress can cause some of the issues above (fatigue, sweating, fever) as well as taking advil can cause one to sweat at night. The joint pain, I could pin on sleeping on a couch that's not made for sleeping but cannot confirm.
I plan on getting tested for sure but would like some preliminary advice.

tl;dr: Protected anal sex with 1 partner 4 weeks ago (uninfected, they tested negative as of 4/2/2014); experienced some minor joint pains, irregular sleeping, 1 day of nausea, nightsweats since Thursday, 1 day of fatigue, but no other symptoms. Am I at risk or can I sleep easier tonight?

Chaotic,

Nothing you describes put you at risk for HIV, because you used condoms, just like you should for intercourse.

The risk factors for HIV are ...

Sharing IV drug needles immediately after use.
Unprotected anal and vaginal sex.
Mother to child during or shortly after birth.
Very specific healthcare situations.

Use condoms for vaginal and anal sex consistently and correctly and you will avoid HIV infection, it is that simple.

It sounds like you are over analyzing every symptom you may have, but symptoms cannot tell you your status, only testing will.  You do not need to test over these incidents and if these are the only situations that concern you, then yes you can sleep easier tonight as you did not have any risk.

Thanks for the response Joe!

I think you may be right in this regard of over analyzing symptoms (I tend to do that with EVERYTHING-my finances, drive to work, cooking, watching tv, anything simple or complex).

I still plan on getting tested as a precaution but you have made it easier for me to sleep tonight!
