I don't think I've had Columbian cuisine, unless you count cocaine.  Haven't had Afghan either, but all the rest I have.

I can generally find something I like in each one.  Italian probably wins, but only if Mario Batali cooks it.  I think I'm going to one of his restaurants for my birthday next month.

mmmm... oxtail!  I used to have this GREAT Jamaican patty place around the corner from me in Brooklyn and I'd always get the oxtail.  Delish.  Also had a tasty Senegalese place... don't see many of those.  Probably the best thing I liked about living in NYC was the great access to such a wide variety of ethnic foods.

Eldon... what's up with all the flirtation?

Does soul food count? They may sounds disgusting but I love some chitlins. If the soul food doesn't count then II will say Italian as well. I miss eating Cuban food though....Wishes I could make trips just for the food.

Philly: A nice quiet setting with a dimly lit room with candles lit while the soft music is playing in the background is definitely a choice of a relaxing dinner to be had.

Casual conversation to take the Stress away from the day.

My grandmother made awesome food.  Pickled watermelon rind and pan fried salt cured country ham.  Corn bread with pork cracklin' all served up on our family tobacco farm.  And yes, there were fancy ceramic spittoons in each room!

Yes, but my grandmother insisted on wainscoting in the living room.  And french doors in the dining room.  She was kind of high faluttin' for country folk, or so she thought.  She could never keep up with her brother who actually owned a Mercedes and *gasp* drank a martini every night before dinner.  If my grandfather wanted some hooch she made him go down to the stables with the workers.

Based on my observations of what?  If my grandmother kept up with my uncle?  Hell no... they had a fierce house in Florida on a canal, ALWAYS a Mercedes and had lived in Aruba for a while as an engineer for an oil company.  My grandparents owned a Ford and lived in the middle of nowhere.

For me, it would mean moving back to NYC because it's not just the food, it's the whole thing, the restaurant, location.  Except Chinese which, however it reflects on my mother's disinterest in cooking, means 'homecooking' via the smell and warmth of it through a paper bag on a cold Sunday night.  I can cook Italian, but if I were siimply talking about eating it: Little Italy.  Cuban via the Cuban/American places in Chelsea.  Indian via Indian row on East 6th Street.  Japanese via Japanese row on East 10th Street.  French at Paris Commune in the West Village.  Win

Love food. Period.

In no particular order except the first:

Mexican - not that "TexMex stuff or the cheap knock-offs they serve in Arizona and California. Real Comida de Norteņo Nuevo Mexico. If they don't ask you "red or green,"  if the salsa or the sausa doesn't make you sweat, and the meal doesn't come with refritos and sopapillas, it ain't a real Mexican restaurant.

Thai

Chinese (Szechuan)

Navajo (kneel down bread, mutton stew and fry bread)

Belgian (mussels served any and every way possible)

Japanese (primarily sushi)

wtf is Medieval French?  Can I have some examples please?

I do research into recipes written pre-1600 as part of a medieval recreation group I participate in. Example: as part of a course, in a feast, that I'm serving to a group of 80 people next month I will be making" Mushroom Tarts". They aer in a pie crust and have chopped mushrooms, Brie cheese, and assorted spices, baked at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

I am part of a Medieval recreation group. I research and recreate foods from pre- 1600 Europe. Next month, at one of our local events, I will be preparing one of the four courses of the FEAST. I will be serving a lamb dish, mushroom tarts (a pie crust with chopped mushrooms, brie cheese, and assorted spices, Baked), and a dish of Parsnips fried with onions and spices.

Queen.....
You never had a meat pie...gurlfren...we used to get those as TV dinners from Swanson....Chicken Pot Pie...you know from MOM:"here eat this and shut up."
But England has a long history of meat pies.  I suspect its a way to use up leftovers. There was even a musical that used meat pies as a vehicle of satire......Sweeney Todd ( Angela Lansbury did a stint as the lead) .....in which this couple ...I think he is a barber? anyway the couple kills various people and turns them into a lucrative meat pie business.

Im all about Ethnic foods...

I simply Must know what Oysters Mombasa is ....

One that I havent seen mentioned is Puerto Rican,  Nothing like some good Mofongo. ( yes I know it sounds like something youd pick out from between your toes)  which is mashed plantain, seasoned with Garlic, and fried pork skins although Bacon is a commom substitute.  I'm going to San Juan in a couple of days and definitely plan to load up on it.

Jamaican Jerk is another one near and dear to my heart, Im working on creating my own version of 'Rasta Pasta' Salad which Ill share when I manage to perfect it. So far, its  curly 'dreadlocks' of pasta and a
Jerk Seasoned pesto, but Im working on a hot version with grilled meatballs....

Another alltime fave is Moroccan, if youve never parfumed your home with a saute' of red onions and cinnamon, you just havent lived.

The whole Middle Eastern lineup is something I fell in love with at first bite, Hummus, Tabbouleh, and Falafel are in my soul forever

Im not sure, but I think a 'Plowmans Lunch' is a chunk of bread, a slice of cheese and a bottle of Ale.

which reminds me of another weirdly named dish called 'Welsh Rarebit', which is melted cheese, seasoned with beer and served on toasted bread.  yummers.

I simply Must know what Oysters Mombasa is ....

OYSTERS MOMBASA
Baked with a Wine Garlic Sauce
Yield: 8 portions (4 oysters per person)
Nowhere are oysters more delicious than on the east coast of Africa (except for the tiny Olympia oysters you get at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco or in New Orleans).

In Kenya, the oysters are opened and each one goes on its own tiny china ramekin or tiny container which looks like a miniature coaster. Twelve of these little dishes are placed on a large platter with a bowl of dark, dark-red cocktail sauce and slices of lemon. Mombasa, that lovely city on the coast of Kenya, boasts the very best of these small oysters.

Open 32 SMALL OYSTERS (Bluepoints or Olympias if possible).

Leave them on the half shell and place on baking sheets.

Wine Garlic Sauce:

Combine: 1/2 cup MELTED BUTTER

4 cloves GARLIC very finely minced
1 cup CHABLIS
4 Tbs. CHOPPED PARSLEY
1 tsp. SALT
1 tsp. FRESHLY GROUND PEPPER
few drops TABASCO
Ladle half of above sauce (1 tsp. per oyster) on each one.

Bake at 350'F. for 6 to 8 minutes.

Ladle the remaining sauce uniformly over the oysters again.

Serve immediately, four per person, with LEMON WEDGES on a 9 inch plate (or on hot rock salt if available).

There you go dear!!!

Thanks !!!!
I just read that Olympia Oysters are the new rage in upscale Raw Bars , so Ill keep an eye out should I find myself in upscale surroundings..sounds like a nice treatment, I hate it when they douse oysters in an overbearing sauce.

Ploughman's lunch = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ploughman's_lunch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ploughman's_lunch).

As for a meat pie, whilst English in origin, it is an Aussie staple - football, meat pies, kangaroos and holden cars. Some say, our national dish.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_meat_pie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_meat_pie).

And, a pie floater, is a meat pie served 'floating' in a bowl of mushy green peas. YUK, unless your pissed (drunk) and then they are divine.

Being in New Mexico, obviously my favorite food is Mexican. I can't get enough red chile, and have oftenthought about setting up an I.V. drip, so can get a constant fix :). Of Mexican food, I really love Huevos Rancheros, which are eggs served on a tortilla, covered in the chile of your choice, then covered with lots of cheese, and a side of beans. MMMMMMM!!!! Second up has to be Carne Adovada, which is chunks of meat, simmered in red chile. I can't get enough. When I travel to the east coast, I make sure to bring red chile powder with me, so I don't start jonesing. To paraphrase the late, great Hunter S. Thompson, "There is nothing in the world as depraved and dangerous as a man in the depths of a chile binge"
I think Aztecan will back me up on this one. And please don't talk about "chilli" which is something entirely different.

Helmand, in Cambridge, was a fave of mine for years. Reasonably priced, fresh, quiet but not somnolent -- perfect date place. With good food to boot.
