*MOAR* threads about the holidays!
« on: November 25, 2013, 07:27:22 am »
OK folks, this involves everyone -- whether you're spending days with family or tooling around town doing the festivities by flying solo -- let us discuss that old pastime of going to the movies during the holiday season. I mean, it's kind of right up there with shopping, isn't it?

So what have you seen recently and what do you want to see at the cinema in the upcoming weeks and months. There's always something released last minute that I wasn't even aware was in production, though I keep up with E!News via my Kardashian obsession.

Basically I haven't been to the movies in months, so I need ideas. You see, my main Father-Son bonding activity is going to the movies -- matinee hours, natch due to my father's senior citizen discount plus I prefer it because the theater is practically empty. Nothing worse than pesky teens texting all during the show, is there?

The Hunger Games is next for me (loved the books)
The Hobbit on opening day (Dec 13)
Gravity is still on the List
Saving Mr. Banks (I think that's the name -- The making Mary Poppins movie)

Probably a few others too, that I can't remember -- Nov - Jan are my prime movies season.

I can't remember the last movie I saw in theaters.  If I go, it has to be some huge blockbuster, that you want to see on the big screen.  I'm not going to the movies to see "The Help."

Hope you have a good time bonding with dad.  Bill Maher ruined Gravity, by revealing a plot twist.  I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it.  I haven't seen it yet, but I guess it will be ruined when I do-- unless he was kidding.

I really started going more because I get a discount through my employer which is pretty  sweet since movies here in NYC are 14.50, pffft.

I pay $8.60 and I'm happy as Twink in a room full of sugar daddies!

I am most excited about The Hobbit. I am also looking forward to The Hunger Games and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. My partner wants to see Philomena.

The last movie I watched was Braveheart.  It pissed me off so badly, not realizing it was a double feature.  I don't have the attention span for a 2 hour movie, let alone a 4 hour one.

That's the last time I was in a theatre.  ;D  You've never met me in person or you would recognize that I can't sit still for that long.  If I remember correctly, Bill allowed me to sneak a flask in.  Plus, I have never had much of an attention span anyways.  My mother always jokes that I would have been put Ritalin quicker than fleas on a dog if it was available back then.

I have a hard time with attention span through a movie.  I will watch one and could only tell you what it was kinda about.  Well, unless it is really good.  And, people complain I talk too much during a movie.

. My partner wants to see Philomena.

Stephen Frears loves unwed mothers. Anyone remember The Snapper? I loved the part where the girl had to throw up on the dance floor so she did it in her purse.

There were a couple of other movies about the Magdalenas. Both a documentary and a feature.

I had a boyfriend who had to get up in the middle of a movie and walk around the theater lobby. When I am watching a good movie or reading a good book I am totally absorbed and can sit for hours, in fact when it ends I can be a bit disoriented.

Yes, I also talk out loud on occasions to the screen, not loud in volume. In fact I am a complete film snob ,very rarely venturing out off Art house cinema,s as the general English behaviour in cinema,s is awful.

I saw Gravity last night and you certainly are correct that 3D "worked" for the film - I had a pretty uncomfortable case of motion sickness during the first half because it worked so well!

Disclaimer: I don't travel well and haven't really since I did the hep C treatment over ten years ago. I get motion sickness very easily; not usually to the point of actually throwing up, but to the point where throwing up would probably be a relief.

I was really happy that I managed to get to the cinema without feeling any nausea, only to be nauseated by watching the film. LOL sometimes you just can't win!

I enjoyed the film despite the discomfort. The 3D effects had me involuntarily ducking in my seat several times.

I know exactly what you mean.  I had to take 5 Dramamine (yes, five), when getting on the plane a couple weeks ago.

I saw "The Hunger Games - Catching Fire" yesterday.  It was very good -- better than the first one, I'd say.  So often a movie doesn't hold up to the what my mind envisioned when reading the book -- but these two surpassed my imagination in spades!!  The arena was just so well done -- actually in both movies, but the second one especially.
