Ian Roberts has been out for years.

Granted his code is Rugby League not Rugby Union but the effect is much the same.

I can attest to the bond of a rugby team and the fierce brutality of the game in comparison to football and then both teams always end up at the pub and guys you cursed and cleated would drink brews and sing weird songs as though nothing ever happened earlier. One of the most brilliant moments in my varied  sports career but no less unforgettable. Unfortunately I played wing and 3/4 and those positions get hit constatlyif no one is out there  and to see guys coming toward me as I was dinner took it's toll, and witnessing a guy break his femur( the excruciatingly loud pop and the bone angle out his leg are also memorable), but the commeraderie is top of deck!
Long, but great story!

Comraderie was fine in soccer and basketball and no bones were broken.  Though I agree nothing beats contact sports for that primal thrill. This makes me think of Temple Grandin who invented squeezing and pressing mechanisms for kids and animals.
Among normal people a similar effect can be delivered by a slap which remains a socially acceptable way to calm down hysteria.  When we were boys we would dispense with the football rules and just play "tackle". Tackle was simple. Who ever had the ball had to run until the rest of the gang caught him and piled on top, crushing him into the ground.  That was brilliantly satisfying. Then the weird thing was that the ball would get passed and someone new would accept the challenge of having it. Why? It was a setup for obliteration, though you would have a few moments of freedom trying to avoid the gang. But the final crush was satisfying anyway.
Weird primal game.
