Mouth Wide Shut
« on: June 02, 2013, 01:14:58 am »
Wasn't that the porn version name to the movie, Eyes Wide Shut?  I'm sleeping with my mouth wide open.  I wake up with my mouth completely bone dry.  Literally bone dry.   I wake up feeling like I have a sore throat, due to zero moisture.  I have to keep water nearby to drink right away.  It would be a great time for someone to take advantage of my purdy mouth.  I guess I'm raising my spider consumption numbers.  Don't they say we eat like 10 a year in our sleep? Lol

This all started a couple months ago, when I had a minor sore throat.  I guess my body adapted by opening my mouth to breathe better, but my brain didn't get the message that I don't have the sore throat anymore.  Everyone says I should be checked for sleep apnea.  Unless the sore throat causing this was a complete coincidence, then perhaps I do have some other issue.

I know my tonsils do always look inflamed to me, but docs act like nothing too out of the ordinary.  I am curious whether anyone has experienced this and what you did.  I guess I should see an ears, nose, and throat doc.  I am concerned about oral health issues from having zero saliva.  I would think my breath would be just awful in the morning, but no complaints so far.  Although, I usually don't speak up close, until I've brushed.  It probably helps that I brush and floss before bed.  I've read things online where some actually tape their mouths shut.  That seems a little scary.  My partner said I was sawing the logs this morning.  I've read sleeping position can contribute to this.

Anyway, it is just frustrating to wake up with a bone dry mouth.  It does make me wonder why this is happening and whether I'm not getting enough air.  I've wondered whether certain meds are causing depressed breathing.  But, I never had this issue until the sore throat.  I remember back in my drinking days having this happen sometimes.  So, just curious what any here have experienced.

Personally I don't know about dry mouth during sleep but I've recently been put on medication for akithesia (the inability to sit still) and it was derived from my anti-psychotic medication to level out my bipolar and it gives me extreme dry mouth so I drink a lot of water but something that may help you re-wet your mouth is an oral solution by biotene. I wish you luck on finding out what may be causing it.

I have a similar problem as thepostergirl (hi!) from a similar medication (or the same — risperidone here, and I'm feeling much less psychotic, haha), and I second the Biotène (or generic equivalent).

It's a little pricey, but:

1) Really, go for the generic. You can get a liter of it Walgreen's brand at Duane Reade for like $10, so you can probably get it at a CVS or Rite Aid for 50¢ and whistle.

2) People generally use too much; you need maybe a tablespoon at most. You definitely ought not swig it because it's not really "mouthwash" in the way Listerine is. It works via some kind of chemical-enzyme-reaction whatsit that causes you to salivate more, or mimics salive, I don't know. Anyway, I use a tablespoon or so in the morning, but for 'touchups', I bought a tiny spray bottle (the size of a Binaca bottle) and get the same effect if I spray three or four times. This liter of generic Biotène will last until the next millennium changeover or at least through the summer.

3) Just to hammer the point, it's pricey compared to Listerine, but it's not really mouthwash, so that's like comparing the cost of a hamburger to the cost of a pack of playing cards. I still use regular mouthwash for antiseptic purposes (along with flossing 1,453,431 times per day).

Edited to add "a liter of it" in the first bullet point.

Are you having sinus trouble?  I usually only sleep with my mouth open during the worst part of allergy season when my nose is stuffed up.

Are you having sinus trouble?  I usually only sleep with my mouth open during the worst part of allergy season when my nose is stuffed up.

This is what Brian, my better half, said.  He said I've been stuffy lately.  And, I have.  Louisville is always in the top cities for allergies.  I usually get stuffiness, instead of having to blow my nose constantly like many.  When I get that, sometimes pinching the skin around nose near my eyes allows better breathing.  But, this started back around the beginning of March after the minor sore throat.  But, I realize early March is actually when things begin to bloom, so pollen my be the culprit.  Perhaps the pollen was responsible for the sore throat and the mouth breathing still happening.

I suppose an ear, nose, and throat doc or allergy doc will be a good place to start.  I also spend a lot of time in our basement family room.  They built the 1,000 sq ft basement with no HVAC returns.  The main floor has several.  We were just talking about adding at least one HVAC return to the basement.  I am sure the air gets stagnant in the basement, and the basement has carpeting, while the main floor has wood floors.  Perhaps an air purifier would be a good investment, too.

I never had this issue in previous years, but I know allergies can occur at any point.

Hate to suggest MORE PILLS on here, but a benadryl at bedtime always helps me.
