Huge tonsils
« on: November 25, 2008, 08:41:35 am »
Over the past couple of days I've noticed the glands in my neck becoming tender and this morning they're quite swollen. My tonsils are MASSIVE, so much so that they touch when I say "ahh". I'm not running a temperature.

I've just started a new combination, so could this be immune reconstitution syndrome? I know I should contact my doctor, but I've spent so much time in hospital recently that I'm a bit tired of the whole process of giving my details and describing my symptoms to several different people!

BM,

While I totally understand your reluctance to contact your doctor, unfortunately this is what you must do. Tonsillitis can be either bacterial or viral in origin and if you have bacterial tonsillitis, you're going to need antibiotics to get rid of it. At this time of year, chances are good that it's bacterial.

No matter what the cause, gargling with warm salt water should bring some temperary relief to the pain and swelling, along with taking Ibuprofen. A doctor would be able to prescribe something like lidocaine for local pain relief.

I urge you to get in contact with your doctor - the sooner, the better. If you leave something like this, it's only going to get worse.

Take care, keep warm, drink plenty of fluids and call the doctor!!!

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Ann. I took your advice and went along. They took a swab, a sputum sample, lots of bloods and I've to go back on Thursday. Hopefully it's nothing.

BM,

Glad to hear it. And yes, hopefully it's nothing, but better to know for sure one way or another. Keep us posted, ok?

Feel better soon,

My doctor prescribed clindamycin (600mg, three times a day), suspecting a massive throat infection. I wonder why my once-weekly azithromycin didn't sort that out. Hmm...

BM,

Sometimes bugs are just too virulent for a once-weekly antibiotic prophylaxis. I'm glad you've got it sorted out now and hopefully you'll start feeling better within a day or so. Don't forget to take the whole script of clindamycin, don't stop taking it just because the sore throat has gone away.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hey BM,

Just butting in here. I took Clindamycin for a rather persistent infection. It worked very well.

As Ann said, take all of it, even if you feel better.

Your doc probably already told you this, but don't spend too much time in the sun, if you are in a location where the weather still permits this.

Also when you finish taking it, you might consider eating yogurt to help regenerate the beneficial flora and fauna in your gut.

This antibiotic will wipe them out and can sometimes cause lingering tummy issues.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

HUGS,

Mark

Thanks Ann and Mark. I'm eating bio-yoghurt while on this antibiotic and will do so for a month afterwards. Even if it doesn't have the desired effect, it's still a yummy distraction from the throat!

Mark, did you experience diarrhoea while on clindamycin?

BM,

Diarrhea is a common side-effect of many antibiotics. Keep eating plenty of yogurt, that should help. If it becomes too bad, talk to the doc.

I'm just back from the hospital after vomiting for most of the night and having really bad diarrhoea. Clindamycin isn't for me! I'm now on clarithromycin and metoclopramide for nausea.

I vomited 70 minutes after taking my anti-retrovirals this morning. Do you think they will have been absorbed?

BM,

From what I understand, as long as you didn't see the pills (whole) in your vomit, you should be ok because that means they've disolved. Even if they've only been partly absorbed, you should be ok.

Sorry to hear you're having such a hard time of it. Hang in there and feel better soon.
