Brain Problems after acquiring HIV?
« on: October 15, 2011, 12:58:55 pm »
Before I became HIV Positive I led an okay, average lifestyle any 18-year old could lead at the time. Start going to college, fraternity, and going out. Then the next semester I got the HIV virus. As soon as I got it, I got tested, got my blood-work done all in a 2 month period.

6-months in...
At first I thought it was depression, I got treated for it. Didn't work. Was seeing a therapist, psychiatrist. Not much has changed. I am currently taking "ADHD medication" called Adderal. I do not show the symptoms for ADHD, but it helped me "cope" to at least a certain extent. My doctor recommended more for "off-label use".
It has "improved" my cognitive functioning; all though I still "suffer" from your typical issues of brain fog, huge memory problems, and massive migraines. (It must be said, I am only 21 and have already some problems) -- it's one thing if you're working and have gotten a routine, but it's different when you're still in College; and it's your "job" to read, read, read and concentrate for hours.

I was wondering what are some typical disease progressions of HIV in the brain? ( I am currently not on Medication)

I know toxoplasmosis is a common one, which other ones also cause cognitive impairment in certain individuals? I would be interested to know some topics about this.

Toxoplasmosis is not at all common.  It basically requires a compromised immune system and no treatment.  This day and age people will begin treatment before they would really be at risk for Toxo.  There's also another thread right now that's somewhat arguing that brain issues in the hiv+ may be a little overblown.
