I went to ER last night after I was having some weird heartbeats.
They said my EKG showed Extra heartbeats or Premature Atrial Contractions or PAV's. Actually PAV's are very common and everybody has them occasionally... you know those little flutters you get sometimes.
What's less common is to have them constantly and for them to not go away, as in my case. About every other beat I have this "extra one" and it is very unnerving.
So they put me on Metoprolol (Toprol), which gets rid of most of the extra beats but makes me rather tired. I also have to go back to the cardiologist. boo.
Where is this "aging gracefully" I keep hearing about?

Ah, tis a hard feat when the heart doesn't match the driver's license :)
At any rate I am sorry that you are encountering this -- didn't this same thing happen when you were jogging or something or was that something else?

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker, hubby bob has been on this since 2002, after his Heart Attack and Open Heart Triple bypass Surgery, now you really need to start taking care of yourself there young man ;)

I take metoprolol extended release. The tiredness should go away after a bit.
On the positive side beta blockers have been used to make people better public speakers.

I've never had this before but coincidentally this started night before last after I went walking/jogging (first time since before Xmas). But I wasnt able to jog hardly any due to my hurt knee, I was maybe out there a total of 20 minutes.
The incident you are thinking about was chest pain and dizziness after some hardcore jogging a few months back. After a battery of EKg and Stress tests I was cleared to jog again.
On the positive side beta blockers have been used to make people better public speakers.

There is, however, much to be said for a massive heart attack. Far better than some lingering gruesome death at the clammy hands of cancer or drooling your autumn days away in some dementia ward.

Are they sure they aren't picking up the heart beat of the baby growing inside your tummy? Although, they grow in the duodenums of men, right? If that's not it, I hope the med works and you are back in rhythm.

I'm pretty sure Will is suffering from Chagas. The long term parasite has damaged his heart and caused him to develop an irregular heart beat. This must be true, because well I was reading about Chagas recently.
Love ya Will, even if you're full of parasites which are slowly eating away at your heart.

I hate this MEtoprolol, it gives me a headache and makes me feel blah. I really hope this is just a temporary thing... I have been thinking about skipping 1 dose of the Meto to see if the wacky beats come back. Matter of fact I think I will do that tomorrow since ill be at moms most of the day.

In all seriousness -- don't fuck around with your heart, Missy! If you are having issues with your med's side effects, talk to you doctor about options -- don't practice medicine on yourself!! You do want to see your Granddaughter get married some day, don't you???

Oh please. The ER doc said it wasnt critical, just something that needs to get rectified and really is more of an annoyance than a life threatening issue.
But anyways I went all day without a dose until about 30 min ago when it started up again. So ill be a good boy and take my meds till I see the cardiologist.

You know folks, I've decided to tell my doc I want off the Abacavir.
I've had to many weird heart issues over the past year or two. Correct me if Im wrong but dont the studies show that the risk of heart attack on Abacavir is increased if there are underlying heart issues?
I have a heart murmur( most people do?), I have a couple minor leaky valves, and that jogging incident a year ago, and now this. Maybe one or two of these by themselves wouldnt be a big deal, but now they are just piling up. So why continue kicking this abacavir "can" down the road?

btw, did you not immediately contact your HIV specialist after having gone to the ER?

The D:A:D study, a large observational study on side effects, suggested a doubling of the risk of heart attack when taking abacavir, the extra risk going some 6 months after ceasing abacavir. This only matters if you have a substantial risk of heart attack etc.
There are problems with interpreting this study, namely it contained loads of Americans with kidney problems on abacavir, and kidney problems are a risk for heart attack.
Unlike the studies GSK/ViiV claim shows no extra risk of heart attack on abacavir, the D:A:D study was designed to capture this quite rare event. I therefore consider it informative, not definitive.
Tis sound to consider an alternative to abacavir if there is one bearing in mind your heartbeat+
However, the abacavir is prob not the cause of the heartbeat+

Since I'm certain all of you have been sitting on the edge of your seat awaiting info on my gimpy ticker, Here's an update.
Spent 3 hours at the cardiologist today, had an EKG and Echo. Doc said there is still an extra beat showing up (that I cannot feel) even with the Metoprolol. Echo shows a Mitral Valve prolapse with minor leakage. Also have a little fat on my heart (shocker).
Basically none of this is gonna kill me right now (sorry folks), and may never kill me. If the beats start breaking through the Metoprolol then he will think about doing something. He thinks all this is brought on by stress.
No limitations on walking/jogging. yay.
So whatevs, I'll just add this Meto pill to my growing regimin of meds.
I'm still going to discuss being taken off Abacavir when I meet with my ID doc next week.

I had this same thing maybe 10 years ago. At the time I was pos but did not actually know I was pos yet. The heart palpitations as I called them started durning the Winter. The doctor had me wear this monitor device for 24 hours. Bottom line, I was told I would not die from this, and that many people also have this condition, and that it was not life threatening. Very un-nerving, but not life threatening.
Mine started around November ten years ago, and simply stopped on its own sometime later that next April, some six months later.
They have not returned (knock on wood).
Looking back I thought of a few things in my life back then that was out of the normal, that I wondered maybe was the cause.
One, I had been having a lot of sinus issues and was popping a lot of sinus pills almost daily. Ingredients in some sinus medicine can cause heart palpitations I later learned.
Two, not knowing back then, I had just became positive and later wondered if that had anything to do with it? The virus staking its ground within my body?
Three, it was Winter time and I usually eat like a pig and get little to no exercise.
Was lack of exercise the cause i wondered?
As March and April came about, I started getting out more and doing more. At some point in April they just stopped. I later wondered if finally getting exercise caused my system to return to normal, ending the palpitations?
That was a strange time. I kind of believe of all the causes I pondered over, it could have been that sinus medicine. The heart doctor had suggested I switch to sinus medicine that contained no Pseudoephedrine (I think that was the ingredient of concern?). I actually quit taking all sinus medicine, but the heart palps still continued for months until stopping on their own later that April.
The doctor had no idea what the cause was, other than telling me I would not die from it. The doctor did not suggest giving me anything for it, only saying that many people also have this.
I later heard Ellen saying on her TV show that she suffered from this. And many other celebrities as well were talking about having this.

Thanks Randy. I'm hoping it goes away soon. I've become used to the Metoprolol and the fatigue has gone away a bit, but I still get headaches that I attribute to the Meto. I also think sometimes my blood pressure gets to low with the meto.
But it's whatever :P
