Treatment for HIV and Hep C coinfection
« on: May 31, 2015, 06:58:08 pm »
Hello. My name is Herb. I am a sixty year old black male.  I have been HIV positive for 28 years and found out I have Hep C 15 years ago.  I have been relatively healthy thought out my treatments.  The only HIV related sickness I have had that I was aware of were night sweats and pneumonia about ten years ago.  I have been on a regimen of truvada, lexiva, and norvir for many years and was recently changed to tivicay and truvada so that I can begin hep c treatments.  Tried complera and it did not let me sleep and gave me vivid rough dreams.  Prior to the change in regimen four months ago I was undetectable and t cells 900.  After the switch my viral load went to 300 on last blood work 2 months ago.  I am experiencing joint aches which is probably hep c related.  I sleep better but I am experiencing bouts of deeper depression and confusion.  Looking forward to hep c treatment but am worried about how it will affect my numbers.  My doctor did another genotype to make sure I am doing okay with change of regimen.  I am grateful for the 28 years of life after witnessing friends die within 2 years of diagnosis in the 80's.  I have heard that people are being cured of hep c but I am still wondering should I have stayed on the regimen that was working well for me before tivicay/truvada.  looking for some encouragement.  I have been blessed with a long life with HIV and am active in encouraging others to receive treatment when positively diagnosed.  Other than small hemagiomas on liver I don't recognize any hep c related illness. I work out regularly and stopped smoking 6 months ago.  I am 6'2 and 215 lbs.  I have been blessed.  Thank you for allowing me to share.

Hey Herb,

I moved your post into your own thread, so everyone can get to know you.  We also have a LTS forum, for those of us diagnosed prior to 1996, where we discuss issues that are unique to our living with HIV.  I look forward to hearing more about you.

Welcome to the Forums.

Some people can cure thier body of Hep C, but as far as I know it happens within the first six months of infection during the acute phase. I'm not sure of the rate of spontaneous cure from chronic cases however.

I'm one of the lucky ones so I'm thankful. Tested positive for Hep C antibody but further testing confirmed that the virus is no longer in my body.

Good luck to you.
