hello everyone, my name is nigel and im 21. recently been diagnosed with HIV (9th april 09) bit of a shock as you can call imagine! was my first ever HIV test too which was a bit upsettin, but nothin i can do now but just look after myself and others.
wish i would have found this site alot closer to my initial diagnosis, you guys seem to know you stuff.
been up and down recently coming to terms with it etc. and got my results back on monday (11th may)
my cd4 count is 595 (which my guessin is good) but my viral load is 76223... the dr said thats about medium but to me is seems a little on the high side, the dr said its normally quite high when it has first been contracted.
so glad i have found this forum too, theres alot of questions that have already been answered by just reading all your other posts

Hello

CD4 above 500 is normal. Counts can dip around a bit if its a recent infection so dont sweat the numbers. 1 test means little. it's the trend that counts (erm, you will hear that a lot here I guess). Viral load around 50k (like yours) is indeed medium. Average, typical even.

Yes, it's a roller coaster but tis not one with a break in the track necessarily. Life goes on, better, worse, different, but on.

i know just one isnt best to go at, just quite pleased with my cd4. gonna try not to worry about it too much until i get a more accurate trend to go off.
life does go on, just gonna b a bit more difficult now. full of new dilemmas really.

ive got a "date" on saturday with someone i have just met. bit nervous really, dont know whether to disclose or not.
i know once u have told someone u cant take it back.
he does live about 52 miles away from runcorn, he lives in hebden bridge, we met in a club in manc. so if he does react a bit badly then at least he is not in the same area of me.
someone who has been giving me a bit of support said that if its a one night stand kind of thing then theres not really any need to disclose because nothing else is really going to happen. but if its gonna develope into somethin more then i should disclose.
theres never really a good time to disclose my status so anyone got some advice about when to do it?
i was thinkin on the first date as then it leaves it up to him to decide whether he wants to c me again or not...

anyone got any ideas or advice on when i should disclose?

 tested positive a couple of years ago and joined the web site just recently.  I don't talk much about my medical status with anyone other than my doctor and my wife of 36 years.  I just wanted to say hello to all and I find most of the posts helpful in some manner.  I have found that whether you are 18 or 54 the news can really shake your world.  I have spent the last 18 months trying to drink myself to death (not really) but it seems like it.  I am in relatively good health and have the support of my wife.  Our marriage is a little weird because the last 4 years of my life I have been transitioning to being a female.  I guess I am a little weird.

You should disclose before you have sex.

Otherwise any advice anyone gives you is just based on their personal experience and personal list of fears, biases and expectations.

Me, I always disclose right away.  That's mostly because I don't really want to waste my time with guys who are uptight about hiv.  There are a lot of fish in the sea I guess.  But even this strategy is far from perfect.  Other people think it's better to wait and see if it's going to go somewhere.

You have a lot to think about and consider before disclosing to a new potential date:

1.  Is it safe?
2.  do you feel secure that you know how to handle it if it goes badly?
3.  have you dealt with everything you need to emotionally?
4.  what are you required to tell a partner, ethically and legally?
5.  is it necessary?

There are many others.


I am sorry that you are so young coming to these forums.  However, I hope you find a sense of support here.  Welcome.

remember...dating is never easy....especially now that you are hiv+...
first...be postive in yourself before you start telling your new dates....
you need to be secure of who you are...
second...date a few times before you tell...make sure this is the right guy for you....
no sense in telling the whole world your story.....

you are still the same person you were before your diagnosis....
