On Ringing in the Ears
« on: January 03, 2007, 03:05:59 pm »
Almost everyday i have "ringing in the ears" - it only comes and goes ... nothing overly annoying.

Is this a side effect of my Combinivir and Sustiva ?
or just something mundane ?

Asone,

I would talk to your doctor about it.

Perharps see a ENT specialist.( Ear Nose and Throat )

Being on med's may cause any kind of physical side effects on the body.

I have started to loose my hearing on Sustiva and Abacavir.

As of last February I have lost all my hearing.

To this day no one can associate my hearing loss with being HIV for 20 years and having been on meds for a long time.

Best of luck.

Hello ,

I have had the ringing in the ears, (tinnitus) since around early to mid 2004. I live with it everyday unfortunately. Do talk to your doctor about it.

Here is a link from the old forums, perhaps you can get some info from that link ;

Are you currently on any anti- biotics, besides your meds?

Have you had a conmplete STD scan ?

I get it A LOT too. Most of the time but usually it can be ignored. Not the high pitched R I N G I N G, but more of a background suttle hum.
I've tried the nose & throat doctor and they are clueless (as I expected). Wasted money on hearing tests and nothing came of it.
I feel its from the meds. I've heard many drugs cause ear ringing and these are pretty powerful drugs, so I just blame it on the meds.

Maybe someday they will discover, or admit, a link between these meds and ear ringing for some.

ps. sometimes I think its the sustiva frying my brain, but I guess that would be more of a sizzle than a ring  ;D

I've had ringing in my left ear for some years - prob since 2002.  It was really bad at first, a loud low buzz.  It subsided after two years and I only notice it very occasionally now.  Like Randy I found the specialist to be without any effective treatments - so i had to stick it out.  Personally I think it's a combination of nerve damage by loud 70's rock and the drugs.  I wish I had some good advice for ya.  My otolaryngologist wasn't helpful but he was honest about medicine's limitations to treat this.  I'd be wary of doctor's pushing pills.

Hello,
I have continuous ringing in the ears.  I don't recall when it started.  I haven't taken any of the drugs mentioned under this topic, but I have taken antibiotics.  I have also been a bartender.

My first regimen was Fortovase, Epivir, and Zerit.  The second was Epivir, Zerit, and Ziagen.  Currently I'm taking Reyataz, Emtriva, and Ziagen.  I took Bactrim and Zithromax daily along with my first regimen while my t-cell count was low.

I've been hospitalized for being dehydrated and was given antibiotics.  I volunteered to do a lymph node biopsy for research purposes, got an infection, and was given antibiotics.

I know of an hiv-negative woman that has severe ringing in her ears and she believes it's from taking antibiotics.

Is it from hiv, hiv-meds, or prolonged exposure to loud music/noise..............................or?
I figure that if my doctor isn't concerned with my fatigue, he isn't concerned about the ringing in my ears.

I know we are our own best health advocates, but as someone here has stated,  they have spent a lot of money and have had no success.

I figure it is just another thing to live with............. and yes it may sound trite, but it does beat the alternative.

I read in Reader's Digest some time ago that ringing in the ears is actually produced in the brain and not in the ears themselves. I don't know whether that is the way it really is, but I have had it for several years, long before starting meds for HIV.  Presently taking Kaletra and Truvada.  There are times when the noise nearly drives me nuts, other times it isn't so bad.  Mine is more like a buzzing sound with variances in pitch.  Some times it's higher than other times.  My wife has it too, and she doesn't have HIV. However, she does take a lot of meds.  Maybe some day someone will figure this out and get us some relief.

I still think its the meds, and can happen with any drugs. I just remembered a childhood friend that was an asprin freak. He popped asprin every day for this or that. I now remember he always complained of ear ringing.

I also think its in the ears or inner ears. If I move my jaw around, the pitch changes and volume. So it must be inner ear.
I wish I could get radio stations, like Gilligan, if I have to have sound in the ears. CNN breaking news would be nice.
Just as long as I dont start hearing little "voices"...  :P

Just a point of interest...............or not.

I'm reading a book now, "things we once held dear."  The author, Ann Tatlock, states that it is true, "that when radio station WLW was broadcasting at 500,000 watts in the 1930's, residents of Mason (Ohio) reported picking up its programming through their drain pipes, metal fence posts, and bedsprings, as well as in the fillings of their teeth."

I thought it ironic that I would choose this book to read before I went away this past weekend and after reading the posts here.
