Today Show Story On Mary Fisher
« on: January 12, 2013, 12:38:47 am »
The Today Show interviewed Mary Fisher.  I had heard of her, but did not know much.  When they showed footage of her giving a speech at a 1992 political convention, I assumed it was the Democrat's.  I was surprised this was the Republican convention.  But, after all, she is a white woman.  To be fair, I am not sure the Dems would have given a speaking spot to a gay man with HIV, in 1992.

At that Repub convention, she did speak about the plight of gay men, and how so many were being disowned by their families.  It was good to see her doing so well, despite a recent breast cancer dx.  She spoke about how being diagnosed with cancer is so different.  She says people were lining up to offer support.  She says this wasn't the case with HIV.  It was good to see Today feature the story.  They actually made room for this, with all their Royal coverage taking up so much time.  ::)

Modified:

After making the statement that I am not sure the Dems would have given a speaking spot to a gay man with HIV in 1992, I was going off my memory of Dem conventions.  However, I didn't really start paying attention until 2000.  I watched bits and pieces prior to that, and was just a political bystander.  Can anyone recall a Dem convention, where someone with HIV/AIDS got a speaking spot--especially in the 80's and 90's?  I could be wrong about what I said.

Ray, thanks for sharing that.  After seeing that, I do remember seeing clips of that.  I had a feeling I was wrong.
