Cipro
« on: August 08, 2008, 06:15:55 pm »
I just received a prescription for Cipro for the trip to AMG next week. My doctor suggests starting it on Monday so that I will have a level amount in my system by the time I arrive in Mexico City on Wednesday.  I had thought the cipro was to be taken only if I thought I was suffering from a bacterial infection (in other words, waiting for symptoms to arise.)  For the others who are bringing Cipro (or its equivalent) are you going to be taking it the entire time...or were you going to wait and take it only if you experience symptoms?

Also, does anyone know whether our hotel has ice that has been made from purified water?  Some tourist hotels in Mexico offer this, but I could not tell from the hotel's website.  Does anyone know...or should we just avoid ice cubes altogether?

Now, remind me why you need to be taking this?

Gary, hun, we'll be doing more than drinking warm drinks.  I'm a bit more paranoid than most, I'll admit, but we are not drinking anything MADE from water: juice (from concentrate - unless it's served in a sealed container), tea, coffee, ect.  Also, our hands, face, and teeth will also be cleaned using bottled water.

Wee One won't be taking anything*.  I'm bringing more meds than she is after finding out today that I have a sinus infection and my lungs are acting up again.

Here's to safe travels for everyone.

Philly,

The purpose is to prevent bacterial infection.  I had thought you only took the antibiotic if you acquired symptoms and wanted to stave off further illness.  My doctor is suggesting taking it prophylactically the entire time (including two days before) going to Mexico as a preventative measure to avoid bacterial illness from water and/or food.  I was wondering what others planned to do with the antibiotics they were bringing.

I don't want to be paranoid, but I also don't want to spend AMG on the throne!

Come on GUYS!

It's not like you are going trekking into  Pakistan or Nepal, you are going to be staying in a hotel in Mexico City!!!!l. I bet they have purified water for their ice machines.

you would only take it if you GOT some bug or something. Cipro is quite strong and it kills all the good flora. Save it in case you do.

Always a good rule of thumb if you travel anywhere out of your country

Drink SEALED bottled water
Don't open your mouth in the shower
Brush your teeth with bottled water
Don't eat food from street vendors.
Ask the hotel if their drinking water is purified, I'll bet it is

Stop being paranoid and enjoy your trip!!!!!

I admit I've been a bit concerned about this after my friend just returned from a week in Mexico with a bit of advice:  "Brush you teeth with bottled water!"  But honestly, she was in coastal towns and frankly, it could've been something she put up her nose as much as something she put in her mouth.

I'm hearing that water in MC is safe.  Regardless, I plan on drinking bottled water if I drink water (as if.) And I think the best thing to do is to ask a concierge at the hotel.  Chances are Jan and RAB will have done this before the rest of us get there.  And if we need to, we can ask if a restaurant has "hielo purificado" before we order a drink.

I don't know about starting the Cipro before you show symptoms, but I'm willing to bet your doc has given that advice before. If it was a huge deal, we probably would know about it, and by that I mean we would have heard something if Cipro ruined a vacation or saved it.

The friend I roast above lived in Playa Del Carmen for 6 years. I'll ask her what she thinks, but really I don't think she's ever been in MC long enough to do anything but hop a bus to party in the backwaters.

I filled a prescription for Cipro "just in case." If nothing happens, I will return with the full bottle.

I also bought a new bottle of Imodium. I always travel with Imodium, whether it is to Mexico City or Santa Fe. One never knows when the hersheys will strike and I was almost out of my travel bottle.

I am packing all my meds in a carry on bag, so they will be with me, regardless. I can buy some changes of clothes if they lose my luggage, but the meds would be much harder to replace.

Aside from that, I am really excited about AMG 08 and look forward to many hugs, butt swats and good times! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

HUGS,

I am bringing "industrial strength" prescription Immodium with me (diphenoxylate/atropine.)  The doctor said it would be more efficient and effective than over the counter Immodium.  If anyone needs any while we are there, be sure to let me know.  I had to sign for it (a controlled substance) so it must be pretty strong!

Beginning the packing process now...but determined not to overpack.  I understand that shorts and sandals are almost never worn by the locals (and it will be quite a bit cooler there than it is here) so I am adjusting accordingly.

Given what I have read here, I am not going to take the Cipro ahead of time but will only take it if the need arises.

I am eager to learn whether or not our hotel uses purified water for their ice. (Hate to go a whole week without ice!)

See some of you on Wednesday...others when you get there!
