Two months, my first numbers and disappointed, I think..

Good morning guys...I am being treated here in Mexico on Atripla....The treatment here consists of handing you boxes of meds, and a "come see me in a few months", in between 6 month testing.....So yesterday I got back my results from my first test after starting Atripla . I had been on the meds 8 weeeks when they drew the blood....The Dr. (22 years old) just handed me the results with no explanation what so ever...I am REALLY bummed about the CD4 count...Can anyone tell me if I should be happy or freaked??

From all your numbers the take home lesson is that you have lost more than 2 LOGs of VL after 2 months which is what you want

VL should be below 400 after 12 weeks , so we might consider you have passed that too

CD3 :72% 71% you have retain homeostasis, which is good

CD4 264 is more than you need to keep away from big trouble

CD4 will go up, takes time

Smoking cessation recommanded.

Life expectency lost to HIV (if any) : estimated less than one year
Life expectency lost to smoking : estimated around 8 years

At least this is the way I (not a doctor) look at it.

First things first, look at your VL. This is what you want addressed so your body can recover and get those CD counts better.

65k to the hundreds is a massive improvement and shows that your drugs are doing what they are designed to do. Your body will be under less strain from fighting the HIV and get on the road to recovery.

You have started your meds in a position that isn't too bad and it would be expected you will react well to the treatment, which indeed you are. As said above you are with CD4 counts high enough to keep you away from the really nasty stuff, believe me, you should be very happy about that. I've been on meds for 3 months now and my CD4 is still at dangerous levels, with that comes more pills each day etc. Your not in that place and the only way you will go is up.

Give it time, its a good result.

the meds don't directly raise your cd4, thats a nice side effect of rebuilding you immune system, VL will go down much faster than CD4 will go up. meds primary function is to prevent virus from replicating

quit smoking, no excuses, just do it.

Erik Lee and Zach...Thanks very much for your responses...That helps me alot...Its really hard not having a Dr. to help interpret the results ...I am much more encouraged!  I will stay the course and attach the smoking issue...Need to stop that!...Thanks guys!!  Madison

Congrats on your results, they are good! I'm sure you will be UD next time. :)

Also, did you precisely asked your doctor to take the time to explain what all those stats are about? Maybe he assumes you know all about it, which is wrong, but it can happen in certain medical environment that healthcare specialists rush things because there's so much things to do. Don't be scared to ask him if you feel like you deserve more time/information. :)

First of all, thank you to all of you guys and gals for this great forum. I just finished 5 months on Atripla and my numbers came in yesterday.. <20 which is UD and my CD4 up again to 312...Its been a tough 6months but all of you were right...Be patient, stay the course and reap the benefits...THANK YOU ALL!!
