At times like this all I feel like doing is chucking everything in, finding a remote house with land and living in complete solitude away from the world growing vegetables and keeping chickens :-\

Well, growing chickens is a lot of work. I have a few hipster friends who tried to dabble. But the eggs are fantastic.

Hey, low feelings happen. Some you can push aside, others you have to surf. I am really sorry you are having to surf these feelings. They absolutely will not last forever. They will not define you.

Although, if you get a house like you described, and if it has wifi, please consider an extra room or three for some of us. Sometimes that remote house with a yard full of chickens doesn't seem like the worst idea.

Obviously, you have never lived in such an area.  It'd be nice for a day or so then what?  Sitting around all day watching the grass grow?  My WVA granny said that to me after I asked her what she did for fun around her little country farm.    ;D   She lived an hour out a gravel road, with nothing remotely close.  I spent all my summers there and was so ready to leave after a short while.  They still don't even cable television in that area so I'm guessing WiFi is out of the question.

We still have the property and I'm sure I'd be allowed to hold an AMG there if anyone is interested in such a non-adventure.

Growing in up in B-F-Missouri, my family raised chickens. It was my job to find the eggs each day. More often than not, the snakes beat me to them.

Oh, and the chickens attracted mountain lions. I can't tell you the number of mornings I found huge cat-tracks in the mud outside the barn and chicken pen. Anyone reading this is probably thinking, "oh, those were bobcats, not mountain lions." Nope, the conservation agents confirmed they were mountain lion tracks due to their size and toe configuration.

After talking to our more experienced neighbors, none of whom had any fowls on their farms, my dad decided to get rid of the chickens. It was just as well. My mother hated plucking them and I hated dealing with snakes in the chicken coop.

After we got rid of the chickens, all the snakes moved to the barn. They drove the rats out of the corn crib, so the rats moved to living under our house.

And people wonder why I really don't miss my childhood.
Reality is frequently inaccurate.

Chickens were allowed to live anywhere they wanted in my great grandma's barn, and they made nests high and low. Mostly high. I had to climb up and get the eggs down for her sometimes, and I was sure every time I reached in I'd pull out a handful of snake.

I'm almost accidentally vegetarian because of chickens. I saw how they lived and what they ate. There's no way I'm putting that in my mouth.

So, yeah. Chickens, blech.
