HIV/AIDS and IDOL Gives Back
« on: April 22, 2010, 03:31:33 am »
I was so glad to see HIV/AIDS getting so much attention on American Idol tonight.  The story about the little girl with AIDS moved me so much.  That little girl inspired me so much.  She was near death with pneumonia and still was upbeat--well, as upbeat as she could be.  Annie Lennox did the profile of the girl.  Then Annie sang a song wearing a T-shirt saying "HIV Positive" on the front.  She has done this before and actually sells the shirts.  It made many wonder whether she was poz, but she isn't.

It is so amazing what HIV meds can do.  I really expected to hear the little girl died.  It really is the Lazarus effect.  HAART has to be the greatest medical achievement in history--even more than the polio vaccine.  Below is the video of the girl and Annie.  I couldn't find Idol's video online from tonight, but I found the video they used.  Idol obviously didn't shoot the video themselves, but used the charity's video.

I love Annie Lennox as an artist and she seems to be a compassionate person who walks the walk.

I saw this last night and the piece of the little girl was striking. I too thought the next segment would be that she died, if you look carefully at the part where she is painting she is breathing (panting)  like she couldnt get any air in her lungs. I was brought to tears when it show her robust and "healthy" several months later, thanks to ARV's. I think the piece spoke well to the masses. BRAVO to Annie for wearing the "HIV Positive" shirt!!! She seemed to be saying " I stand behind everyone who is HIv poz, you should too, I am not afraid, you shouldnt be either"

Loved it.

Found this Youtube Video of Annie explaining why she wears the HIV Positive Tshirt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qngxRypofw0&feature=player_embedded#!

It's all about Solidarity

In part it says:
In a country like South Africa, where HIV is so prevalent, and yet you have stigma where people are afraid to openly come out and say that they're HIV positive," Lennox said, "this T-shirt, whoever wears it, is making a statement of solidarity, and they're saying, 'We're coming out from behind the shadows. We're trying to normalize what is a preventable thing. It doesn't need to have the stigma.' "

I was lucky enough to listen to Annnie Lenox speak at a Womens Rally that was held in the Zocalo area at the IAC in Mexico City, although most of it was done in Spanish her message as always was very powerful...a wonderful lady and very dedicated to helping Children with HIV.

I DVR'd it and just saw it now. Annie Lennox . . . gotta love her. What a moving story about that little girl (Avelile).

And Mary J. Blige doing Stairway To Heaven was amazing.

I know I'm late to the party but I just finished watching Idol Gives Back. I found the videos very moving and it made me appreciate, yet again, how lucky I am that I have access to HIV medications. Some other observations:

Carrie Underwood and Annie Lennox sounded awesome.

Could Alicia Keyes have found a less flattering outfit? I don't think so.

The Black Eyed Peas were a big 'ol mess.

Wanda Sykes was very funny and her American Idol skit seemed to piss off Kara, which made me love Wanda even more.
