We met on the dance floor
« on: November 10, 2007, 07:18:47 am »
With the seemingly never ending perception of some that there exists a new versus old dynamic withen the forums I offer you this vlog. I don't think I've heard it expressed any better or with any more power or meaning.

Seems like it was only yesterday.

A lifetime ago.

Thanks Dach.

It was very moving. I might be a relative newbie, still pre-med and with a relatively positive expectation from the future, but I think it's very important we not forget the impact the epidemic has had on so many, those that died, those left behind and those still suffering.

Very powerful. I am writing to you through tears.

Those who don't know cannot possibly imagine all that has been lost. In a way that's what happens pretty much naturally from each generation to the next and the next. But with the epidemic we're talking about something unnatural -- the decimation of at least one and perhaps two generations which have left an enormous chasm with only some of us left who know what happened.

Thanks, Doxie.

That was a beautiful and moving tribute. Even though I never went to a circuit party, it was a very sad and emotional reminder for me of those days.

Thank you so much for posting this.

If anyone gets anything out of what Joe is saying I want this part of his message to ring out loud and clear to anyone who feels a chasm exists in the forums...

Oh man, do I remember...
I'm a little surprised how close it is to the surface still, when I watch something like this.
It catches me off guard.
Thanks Doxie.

What a great blog.   It brought me to tears as well, as I was there at a lot of the places he talked about in Atlanta.

No one can ever completely understand unless they went through it.   That is the bond us 'dinosaurs' have with each other...we get it.

I love his stories about the dance floor.....and I still do love to dance (and completely made a fool of myself at our Meet N Greet in S.F.)   Thank you Dennis, for dancing with an old guy.....

And thanks Hal, for posting this.

hugs,

Alan

Memories such as this recount, are strong and poignant to even me who is about 10, 15 years his junior. Hal, thank you for posting this, it's, as you said earlier a "bittersweet" recollection of a time when people flocked together to create these chosen families for love and support. Additionally it is an excellent commentary on what is missing in today's gay community, our familial bonds with each other.

Thanks Hal!

I guess I was somewhat lucky.  I came out at 24 in 1989, and seemed to miss that huge tidal wave of loss that hit the gay community.  Out of that initial group of friend I made going to dance clubs, nobody has passed away from AIDS.  I count myself very fortunate in that respect.  Some have been living with HIV since that time though.  Of course there were the hot guys you'd see every weekend and  then just disappeared, leaving you to wonder had they moved away or...

PS I don't remember the last time I went out dancing, but I don't suppose my straight friends who have been married for 16 years remember either.
