Title: Man Intentionally Spread AIDS To Numerous Women
Post by: dad1216 on February 21, 2010, 09:42:56 am
GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A man was arrested Friday night after he knowingly and intentionally tried to spread AIDS to more than 100 women in central Indiana over a period of more than five years, police said.
A SWAT unit was called in to arrest Tony Perkins, 47, who authorities said had been using the dating Web site plentyoffish.com to find many of his victims, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

Police expect numerous women to come forward in the wake of the release of information about Perkins.
Investigators said a very brave ex-girlfriend brought the case to light, even though she received death threats from Perkins.

The woman, who didn't want her identity revealed, said Perkins' daughter warned her that he had AIDS and had been trying to spread it since being diagnosed in 2004.
"One of his daughters Myspaced me and … said that she had watched her father infect countless women," the woman said. "Some have died, and she could no longer stand by."
The woman told 6News' Tanya Spencer that she loved Perkins, who she had dated for nearly two years, and thought he loved her, too. It wasn't until well into their relationship that she found out he had AIDS.

"It's my personal mission to help save lives. God spared me. I've tested negative for a year. My last AIDS test was in February," she said. "Maybe I was the angel to stop the anti-Christ. His quotes were, 'A whore gave it to me, so if a whore wants to sleep with me on the first night, she deserves what she gets.'"

Perkins was charged with failure of carriers of dangerous communicable diseases to warn persons at risk and intimidation.
Police think Perkins had unprotected sex with 100 or more women. They have confirmed the identities of more than 10 of them already.
"We will go through his cell phone records and try to find some other numbers and see if we can locate as many as we can and delicately notify them of what's going on," said Greenwood Police Chief Joe Pitcher.

Perkins was held Saturday at the Johnson County Jail on a $9,000 bond. He declined 6News' request for an interview.
The woman told 6News that she's outraged at the bond amount and that she's convinced that if Perkins gets out of jail, he will kill her.

Sorry but that has got to be the biggest load of bull i've read in a long time. Obviously written by someone who thinks you become infected and die in a matter of days.

That story doesn't suprise me coming from GREENWOOD, Ind.. I'm sure everyone remembers the story of Ryan White from Kokomo Ind. which Greenwood isn't that far from, about 68 miles apart. I don't condone what he may have done. but Ind. has a big problem with making a mountian out of a mole hill.

If he was diagnosed in 2004 and started, then, to spread it, I find it hard to believe some he infected have already died.  I've heard of fast progressors, but that is fast.  I suppose it could be possible.  I've been hearing about these arrests on a weekly basis it seems.  Maybe I'm just paying more attention now than in years past.

Off topic-- I hate when people say God spared or protected them.  I just got into a big debate with a family member about this.  When people say that, they are saying God felt they were special and others weren't good enough for his protection.  If you were lucky enough to not get HIV or die in a natural disaster, you were just lucky.  It demeans all those who weren't as lucky.  But, I'm getting really off topic.

No dear, that is very much on topic.  Such ignorance and stupidity and hatred (hiv+ is the anti-christ) in the words quoted in that article.

I love the comments sections (http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/Man-accused-of-knowingly-spreading-hiv#viewSingle93114385) on the internet:

why not blame it on the one who asks? I dont see any difference between him and his partners. Vile disgusting free sex! Acting as animals. Caught up in their perverted fantasies. Mating with one then another like rabbits. Seak the lord. Vote republican and remember god put this disease upon mankind and mankind should never find a cure. This is what the homosexuals deserve. The adulterers. Drug users and all africans on that continent that live like animals and have not been trained by the white man. Sarh in 12! Lets have tea!

That is a truly awesome display of idiocy.

So what would happen to someone who was sleeping around without using protection and all the while knowing that they are positive?  I've read a couple of stories like this one from the US but nothing in the UK.  It must be really hard to prosecute?

Taboo, there have been quite a few cases in the UK. They mostly seem to involve immigrant men accused of infecting British women. See a bias? I do. Try googling hiv prosecutions UK.

LOL that's exactly what I was thinking!  I wonder about the accuracy of this 'article'.  I mean, the guy's been infected since '04 and is intentionally spreading 'AIDS'.  I'd have thought that, by this time, he'd likely be on meds.  If so, and undetectable, there's not a huge chance that he spread much 'AIDS' by having sex with 100 women (thinking back to that Swiss study).  Even if not on meds, how does he track these women to make sure they're infected?  After all, that very brave ex-girlfriend has tested negative again for AIDS.

These people sound very ignorant... an 'AIDS test'?  Hell, I'd bet most members here would pass an 'AIDS test', but they may not test negative on an HIV test.  I'm thinking it was just a really slow news day and 'reporters' were scraping the bottom to get a sensationalist story.

Thanks Ann, found lots of info on the tht website - I've copied the link if anyone else is interested!  It's all a bit scarey - I didn't realise all the legal issues.

This is also true of prosecutions in Australia. It is generally heterosexual men (of largely immigrant origin) who face prosecution for infecting women.

Miss P,

Was that off the WRTV 6 webpage about the story?  I went back looking for it and couldn't find it.  I wonder if they pulled it?  I noticed they didn't pull all the endorsements of violence people were spouting.  I found that very disturbing.  Every other post was about hanging him, cutting his penis off, or the swat team should have killed him on the spot.  I don't understand why a swat team was needed, but whatever.

I just noticed you had a link...sorry about that.  Yours is from WISH-TV.  I did an internship at WISH-TV.  I'm surprised WISH is allowing endorsements of violence and comments saying this guy must be gay/bi and "that is sick."  I cannot believe they are allowing people to speak that way.  I know if people made derogatory remarks about other minorities, they would pull it--as they should.  I'm going to e-mail some friends I still have at that station.  This really disappoints me.

WISH web story about man with HIV arrested‏

Dear Debby,

I'm writing to you with this, because I'm not sure who to contact.  I actually met you a couple times in the early '90's when I was in high school.  I did several job-shadows at WISH and an internship.  I actually started to know several people there.  I was there so much that I started to think I was wearing out my welcome..lol.  I left for Louisville and have worked for a couple stations here.  Everyone I knew at WISH is gone now.

Anyway, I was reading the story on WISH's website about the man who was arrested for allegedly not telling 100 woman he was HIV positive.  On the web version, it says he was infected with AIDS and many other references like this.  Well, as you know, people are infected with HIV--not AIDS.

That is not the thing I'm concerned about.  In the forums/comments section, there are people saying really offensive things.  One person was saying HIV is God's punishment for gays and that we should never find a cure or even medicines.  She goes on to say Africans deserve HIV as well, because they need to be controlled by white men.  There are others saying offensive things like this as well.

I was hoping you could forward this to the web content director.  I know some of my friends who still live in Indiana say they have clicked on the report abuse button, but nothing has been done.  Those comments are very offensive.  I would normally be against censoring people, but those comments are getting out of hand.  I realize people don't have to view the comments if they don't want, but I know WISH wouldn't want comments like that on it's page.

Thank you.  I hope all is well in Indy.

How smart to do this and for multiple reasons. I hope the station management directs their webmaster to make revisions. Will you please let us know how it goes? This could be a success story, quoted and used, to help other local-level affiliate stations revise news content. Every time I hear, or read, AIDS when it should be HIV, I think of the dwindling quality of news, zero researching of topics, and deteriorating language skills. News anchors of today can't get lay/lie right let alone the distinction between HIV and AIDS. Locally, one of our radio announcers very confidently spoke of a criminal trial that was going to have a "change of veneer" -- I thought WTF? Then I realized, it was probably spellcheck's offering to a misspellling of venue.    Hope you post that Debby made your WISH come true.

The internet is a great innovation but gives a voice to the schmuck. It is is perhaps useful to know you are indeed in the tents of the MOST HATED (paid and unpaid) whatever the law says. It encourages vigilance.

I regard all news reports as untruthful. Even the ones with a modicum of fact, eg our Prime Minister's management style, can be spun for column inches.

WISH-TV removed the offensive comments so far.  They removed the really offensive comment about how gays and Africans deserve AIDS.  They removed other offensive comments similar to these.  However, they didn't remove the incorrect use of the word AIDS from the web story.  It still says he infected women with AIDS.  When you watch the on-air story, the reporter does say HIV instead of AIDS.

I think it was probably people clicking the report abuse button on the comments that got them pulled.  Louisville stations are now covering this story as his ex-girlfriend said he would often come down here to an adult bookstore.

I was hoping they would correct the web version story as many incorrectly use the word AIDS.  Some may think this isn't a big deal, but I know I've gotten into arguments at stations I've worked at for putting out incorrect info--not just about this, but other things as well such as political info.

This is from this website, Poz.com.  I thought it was interesting that it said none of the women have tested positive.  In the news reports, they let the claim, "he infected several women and some have already died" go unchallenged.  This clearly says none have tested poz.  I'm more concerned over how the media has covered this story than anything.  Journalists are always suppose to challenge statements like these.  They should have said, "We cannot confirm any of these women have tested positive or anyone has died."  They should have done this until they could confirm what was true or false.

From Poz.com:

Indiana Police Say HIV-Positive Man Put 26 Women at Risk

An HIV-positive Indiana man pleaded guilty February 24 to two felony counts of failing to warn a sexual partner that he had HIV, the Indiana Star reports. Tony Perkins, 47, was arrested last month after a former girlfriend reported him to the authorities.

According to the article, this case is likely the first conviction in the state under a 1993 law requiring people living with HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B to inform their sexual partners of their status.

In Johnson Superior Court, Perkins reportedly admitted to having sex with two women—including his girlfriend of two and a half years—without disclosing his HIV status. He affirms that he always used a condom.

Police plan to recommend additional charges after 24 other women have come forward to claim to have had sex with Perkins. None of them has tested positive for HIV.

Perkins said he revealed his HIV status to his dates for about a year after his 2004 AIDS diagnosis but then stopped after a string of post-disclosure rejections.

“I told them, and they would never call again,” he said. “They treated me like I had the plague.”

Perkins will be sentenced April 21.

I am fully aware that in many places that nondisclosure is a crime.  Even if there was no transmission. Even if it was safe sex.  Thus no risk of transmission.  Which is the case for this guy.
So here is another one of these instances in which the punishment does not fit the crime.

He just seems like a selfish guy attending to his needs, a liar - like a lot of men and women in relationships.

This story is just pathetic - for the stupid laws, for the stupid people on both sides of the "crime".
