Recently diagnosed and have questions
« on: October 20, 2013, 06:35:02 pm »
I was diagnosed last month that I am hiv positive.
Since then I haven't been to the doctor yet. I'm waiting for my Ryan White to kick in.
I was wondering if its okay for me to exercise right now? I'm scared to cause I'm worried I might over work my body cause I'm not on any medications right now. Also is it okay for me to take a multivitamin? I'm scared to take that cause I'm worried it might affect the medication the doctors put me on. I'm 21 years old btw

work out and exercise and get your body healthy and ready to fight this virus.  You'll be fine. You'll live a long life.  I was just diagnosed a few months ago and I was put on meds.  Don't see a difference at all, no side affects.  Still work out every day.
Take your vitamins, work out, eat right.  Do all the stuff you did or should have done before.
Live life to it's fullest.  You have a great future ahead of you.

I got diagnosed in June this year and one of the things I found really helpful was that several people pointed out that this isn't the end of the world. I have a long-term, chronic health condition, sure. But it's one that can be managed -- managed more easily than diabetes. It's not all roses and puppies, but it's really not the end of the world either. And the latest studies are that the life expectancy for HIV+ people is pretty much the same as the life expectancy for negative people. Our diagnosis does not mean we're going to die young any more.

Are there support organisations in your city? Here in the UK, the Terrence Higgins Trust runs group courses for newly diagnosed people and I found that pretty helpful too -- I got to meet some other guys in just the same situation as me.

Don't be scared about going to the HIV clinic. They won't judge you or make you feel stupid or bad. But they will monitor your overall health, so that you can start meds before you get ill. But no-one will force you to start meds if you're not ready to. And, as Houskypoz pointed out, plenty of people don't get side-effects or only get minimal side-effects -- and side-effects get better as your body gets used to the meds anyway.

It's a tough thing to get diagnosed with HIV, but everyone here has been through what you're going through now and we're all happy to help in any way we can.

Good luck, dude!  :)
