Toothbrush Risk
« on: July 03, 2011, 08:22:04 am »
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.
My two year old recently developed thrush. I don't think it's normal for two year old to get thrush, is it. Anyway, reason I'm writing is because a couple months back he got a hold of my toothbrush. He was going into my closet where I keep my personal stuff. He did this a couple of times before I knew my 4 year old was going in their to steal my gum, snacks, etc.
Am I being an idiot in thinking I infected my son with my toothbrush ? I do bleed when I brush. At times I don't  rinse it well because of being in a rush. My toothbrush  was used probably 90 mins before he grabbed it. He did this about three times, maybe more.
The thrush really scared the shit out of me. Please accept my apology if this is a stupid question.

You are an idiot, but not because your kids are playing with your toothbrush. Rather, you're an idiot because you've elected not to educate yourself about HIV.

Prepare to be educated.

HIV is transmitted via unprotected anal and vaginal sex, by sharing contaminated injecting equipment such as needles and syringes and in some cases from HIV positive mother to her unborn or nursing infant.

Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread and follow the links to our lessons on HIV transmission.

I dunno what the fuck is going on in your house, but why don't you buy your chilluns some toothbrushes of they own?

Thats, calm down. You can't get hiv from a toothbrush.

It's not uncommon for a two year old to get thrush, particularly if they are still sucking on things (like thumbs or those toddler cups with a spout) or if the child has recently been on antibiotics for something like an ear infection, for example.

Has this child actually been diagnosed as having thrush? Because if you're just looking into the mouth and seeing white, you're probably mistaken.

He is a baby . He puts stuff in his mouth. They have their own toothbrush. I have read about a case of a kid being infected by this route.

Yup. I remember that case. Twin boys. One was born positive and the other was negative.

At some point the second boy tested positive and the only thing they could put it down to was the sharing of toothbrushes.

Best you don't let your baby share your toothbrush, eh?

In your initial post you said that English was not your native language.  On the off chance it might be easier to read them in Spanish, here is a link to the Spanish version of the lessons on transmission:

well really the question is a good one. i remember when i was dx'd  a year ago my primary doctor who dx'd me told me to never share a toothbrush or razer again.
so perhaps this person's dr told him the same stupid shit when he was dx'd and never thought to question a dr by checking into that fact?
the mainstream doctors have to educate themselves so they can educate thier patients.

ah thats not nice .hes a good dr,but he doesnt have the info. thats my point. society dr's included do not know the facts. hell i was guilty of being very ignorant of this thing until i was dx'd with it. here i am a gay man at 40 who grew up with this disease. i should have been more aware of the facts too. but again if dr's are dx'ing us they gotta have the facts. have to.

I don't think you have too much to worry about Thatsall....If there was any viral residue on your toothbrush after you brushed your teeth, HIV cannot survive outside of the body for very long at all, and I'm talking a matter of minutes..Your 2-year old should be just fine

Really? Online is just the place for disrespect.  Its annonymous.

This is a pretty basic lesson though in HIV transmission.  You >can not< transmit HIV via a toothbrush or kissing or anything of the sort.  I'm sure its still frustrating to see people still in 2011 question such a thing.  Its rather elementary.

Probably because sites like The Body state that this can happen. My babies momma brought that up to me as well that she read online that he can get it from my toothbrush, I was lead to believe no and no on kissing, but 1 of the main sites that google brings up for HIV info is The Body who sure enough says both

If you read the thread a bit more carefully, you would have noticed that the OP ASKED if he was being an idiot. He got a reply in the affirmative. I do not see a violation in that exchange.

People loose relevancy when they excuse and condone bad behavior.  Boys will be boys mentality doesn't hold up any longer.  Personally, I don't need to "understand" someone's personality to know bad behavior when I see it.

I know people collaborating behind the scenes to make an issue where there isn't one, too.

If nothing else, this certainly stands to underline just how sincere your apology really was when you drunkenly attacked Phillicia a few weeks back.

Rather than allow another useless back-and-forth insult exchange to take place here, I'm locking this thread. It long since served its original purpose anyway and has gone way off-topic.
