Because you had protected sex, you have nothing to worry about with regard to HIV. Please read our Welcome Thread to learn how HIV is and is not transmitted.

That said, sexually active people should have a full STD screen at least twice a year. A full screen will include an HIV antibody test. STD's such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea are far more prevalent and contagious than HIV. If it's been a while since your last screen or if you've never had one before you might consider making an appointment with your doctor or local clinic.

I went to the doctor today for a sore throat; they tested for strep and it came out negative.  She said I do have a bacterial infection in my throat and put me on zpac.   Are Bacterial infections a symptom?

Again,

Bacterial infections are a sign of bacterial infections. They're nothing to do with hiv.

You did not have a risk. Protected intercourse is just that, protected. Condoms have been PROVEN to prevent hiv infection.

Now I am really freaking out!!  I put the HIV thing behind me and my girlfreind and I just had unprotected sex for the first time ever 5 days ago.  We just noticed a rash on her legs that looks like little pin wheels; they do not itch.

Is this to soon for symptoms.    I thougt I was in the clear because I was protected.

I'm freaking out that I may have given her something if I caught something.

Go back and read the "Welcome" thread. You had protected sex and whatever is wrong with your girlfriend has nothing to do with the protected sex you had with the SW. End of subject.

Again,

You don't just need to be using condoms with sex workers, you need to be using condoms with anyone unless you have tested together with them. Has your girlfriend ever tested?

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

I tested last October and she tested during the year.  We have always had protected.  Even with my one out of bounds turn with a SW.   So we always used protection.

We started last week having unprotected because I thought my SW episode was a no risk.

I’m just scared because of the rash.

The rash is unrelated to HIV. See a dermatologist if need be.

I have one last question and I will leave this alone.

Would 5 days be to early to see Rash do to ARS?

Yes. You can't get ARS if you didn't have a risk of becoming infected and you didn't.

Just want to clarify something here. You mention that you and your gf are now having unprotected sex. Have you both tested negative together at the same time? And are you in a securely monogamous committed relationship?

Because those are the only circumstances under which you can safely dispense with using condoms.

Yes we had both test around the same time last year.  We been in a monogamous committed relationship with eachother always using protections.   Other then my one moment of self greed going to a SW we have been monogamous.  Condoms were always used.

I had put the SW insident behind me because it was protected.

We just started going unprotected.  Was this a big mistake.  I thought HIV was a no-risk with the SW because it was protected?

As long as you always use a condom for intercourse you are well protected as far as HIV is concerned.

However, you do need to be aware there are other STDs which can be passed by skin to skin contact or orally, so if you are sexually active outside of your relationship you should be getting tested regularly with a full STD panel. By regularly I mean at least annually and every six months is even better.

Thank you Andy,

So you think it is safe to say I can stop worrying about HIV from the SW becuase I was protected.

And yes I need to get checked for other STIS.

Thank you,

One more question.

I understand that because I wore a condom I was protected.  My only question is if I had a scratch on my scrotum could that be an entry point?  I have a varicose vane in my scrotum that makes it much larger and I am wondering if I got vaginal fluid on my scrotum if it could enter that way.

again,

NO. Hiv is transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. What you describe is NOT a risk for hiv infection.

I am learning very quickly that there is a lot of different information out on the web as to what is safe and what is isn’t.  I have also notice on the back of the condom box it says that nothing is 100% safe when it come to HIV.   Does this mean condoms are not always 100% when use correctly.

Sorry to keep posting.  I am still just a little bugged out by all this.
My girlfriend 11 days after we first notice the bumps on here legs still has them.  They are not as red and starting to fade.   I am wondering if maybe it was a hot tub that caused them.  I just can't get in out of my head if I did catch HIV.  I am positive the condom did not break.

Ann,

I am trying to take you advice and realize I didn’t have a risk.  Now my new concern is my gf is saying she is hot at night not waking up to serious nigh sweats but hot.  I think I am just symptom hunting but the what if’s keep happening.   I am also now seeing a counselor who keeps telling me that I didn’t have a risk because it was protected.  Should I be concerned about her being hot at night.  I am usually the one who is hot

If your girlfriend is having problems, then she needs to see her doctor. We cannot possibly tell you why she is hot at night. This is NOT an hiv situation.

Again,

That is unlikely. However, the ONLY way to know what is going on is to go to the doctor. This is not a doctor's office, it is an internet forum. An internet forum about hiv.

If you are as worried about things as you say you are, then I don't understand why you cannot be bothered to see a doctor or get your girlfriend to a doctor. You didn't have a risk of hiv infection and the only way to know what is really going on is to see a doctor. We cannot possibly diagnose either you or your girlfriend over the internet.

You didn't have a risk of hiv infection and if you continue to insist on coming here to wring your hands over your sex worker experience, I will have to give you a time out to encourage you to get to a doctor.

Perhaps a visit to a counselor to deal with your feelings of guilt is also in order. You cannot deal with that here.

Yes, you can let this go. You never needed to test over this incident in the first place. You are hiv negative and it's time to move on with your life, taking the condoms with you and making sure you use them properly.
