I had unprotected sex with someone in March 07. I tested neg on 4/24/07 then never had any "risky" behavior. I was tested poz on 1/22/08, then I asked my Mar 07 partner he said he tested neg Dec. 07. Suppose he is telling the truth, suppose I didn't get it from anybody else, is that possible at all someone has the virus but they don't develop any antibodies so regular HIV test can't detect them?

Not sure of it, but my guess would be that your friend is lying. (doesn't want you to blame your POZ status on him).   I don't think there are any mysterious strains of HIV that antibody tests fail to uncover......

Yairs, early in the infection (prior to 6 weeks since infection) it's possible to test HIV negative but carry the virus and transmit it.

Yeah, I think you are right. I did demand to see his test result but he refused. I want to trust him and don't want to blame anybody but his behavior is kind of strange.

Oh, he said he was detained for 83 days w/o a trial, Dec 07-Feb. 08, that's when he was tested when he was arrested. Is that true that STD test is mandatory for all inmates? And, is that possible someone can be detained for so long without a trial? He said he was falsely accused of assault and robbery happened in November 06 in SF while he was in LA... But who knows... I can't believe anything he said any more, but he appears to be so genuine... What a world!

He was detained for 83 days for suspected robbery/assault?! In the US? Alive, this is not China you're talking about right? If he wasn't charged or prosecuted I don't think they detain people for that long. Or am I missing something.... ???

Sounds like China, but it's US. He said he was stopped in Houston, his hometown, then police found record, or maybe a warrant out for his name in Santa Clara county so he was extradited to Santa Clara county and was detained there for 83 days until he found the money to make bail. He is black, 38yo, if that's relevant. He said he has a college degree and had a nice pricy apartment in LA when we met...

So no scientific explanation of what's going on, I guess. I really want to believe him but now I have to assume he was a liar. It's really saddening to know a person can flatly lie to your face and intentionally infect you... Anyway, I myself believed him so it's my fault.

Whether you believe him or not I suppose it's not relevant now. Consider there's a small (?) chance that this guy was indeed involving in a robbery/assault, perhaps it's better to stay away. I mean - a nice apartment but no bail money?

It does sound like you have accepted that it's our duty to protect ourselves, but most of us would and did try to find ways to find someone to share the blame. I hope you'd find a way to work through this anger, perhaps, or frustration that you suspect he's still lying to you about his status.

I don't know what to tell you about all his legal problems, but the Damned One was right on in what he told you.

Yeah, Damned one was absolutely right. But in my case, the question was whether a person can carry the virus w/o developing any antibodies for more than 6 months or even forever? I wonder whether that's scientificly possible at all. How can HIV virus survive w/o killing CD4, and if CD4's are died, how come the body doesn't generate antibody?

It seems it is possible but exceptionally rare:

Thank you for the link, that's exactly the thing that I am looking for. Although my friend might not be one of the rare cases, this provided one possible explanation and I can make peace with it now.

Hind sight is 20/20, if I had read this article earlier, I would have never had unprotected sex with anyone...

Alive,

I would encourage you not to stress out too much over whether or not this person was or is hiv+.   Something we all must accept (and some do struggle with it) is that we are responsible for our own health and well-being.   The only person to 'blame' is the one you see in the mirror.

The sooner you accept that and forgive yourself, the sooner you can begin to lead a much richer life.

Just some advice from an old guy who's had a LONG time to think about this kind of thing.....

hugs,
Alan

Now that's a good attitude!    ;D

You know, I can truthfully say that NO sex I have ever had in my life was worth all the pain and heartache AIDS has caused me.  But, at least it was some fun along the way...

Keep on looking for those silver linings.  ;)

My doctor got a viral load out of me in 11/07, but my ELISA test still came back negative until three days ago (with the most recent one being January). My first encounter with the person I got it from was in July and last was in September. That means there are potentially 6 - 8 months that I tested negative that I had and could have spread it... so... ya. I guess it happens, everyone's bodies are different and there are so many strains going around... who knows, with the right combination maybe there are people who never come up positive on an ELISA test but carry a viral load forever.

Very interesting. My doc didn't take my VL before I tested positive. Did you have to pay for the VL test before you tested positive ? Your experience goes counter to what the CDC says everybody testing positive at 13 weeks and most at 25 days ! I really think that is BS by the way. Either that or we are 2 very exceptional individuals. I had a severe illness that I think was HIV in early april 2006. I tested HIV negative in late june 2006. I didn't test HIV positive until late october 2006 . And I had a very low V (698)L. My VL had probably spiked during the preceding illness and then gone way down by the time I tested positive.

It seems to me that there are still so many unknowns on HIV. Disappointingly I have to guess we are still pretty far from a cure. I am going in to get my 2nd lab tomorrow hopefully my number is still good so I don't need to start meds just yet...
