Pregnancy and Elite or Viremic Controllers
« on: August 25, 2008, 03:32:05 pm »
Hello,

I'm wondering if anybody out there know of any women that are viremic or elite controllers who have become pregnant ?

I am interested in getting in touch with a woman who has been in this situation.

I am in my second trimester of pregnancy and am hoping to speak with somebody in this situation. I am curious whether women in this situation have started treatment at 14 weeks or 20 weeks.

I have spoken with some of the HIV+ women on this board that have recently had children and this has been really helpful, but I am also curious to speak to an elite controller or viremic controller. If you know of anybody in this situation or who has been in this situation please let me know !

Thanks,

Sara

Hi Sara-
I had to google what viremic controller was so I am not going to be much help.  I just wanted to Congratulate you on your pregnancy.
Just wondering, wouldn't it be kind of the same thing as a neg women and poz man getting pregnant natually.  They must start meds at a certain point?
I could check with my sons fathers ex-wife, if that would help.  She is still neg, as is, thier daughter.
Good Luck

Hi Snowangel,

Thanks for your congratulations !!

My question is different from that of a poz man/neg woman -- I am poz (female) and my partner is negative (male). We conceived artificially to protect him.

I'm just curious about other women who control HIV without medication  -- I am curious when they started treatment to prevent transmission to the baby. There are different schools of thought ranging from 14 weeks to 20 weeks.

Thanks !

Sara

Hi Sara-
I was just thinking that it would be kind of be the same thing, since you are not on meds. She wasn't taking meds but did during pregancy to prevent transmission.
I was in a Women and Infant transmission study here in Mass but I have always been on meds.  I just had to switch meds during pregnancy.  I can send my nurses an e-mail and ask them to see if they have run into this or not?

Hi Snowangel --

I had not heard of that -- the HIV negative woman took medication ?  I guess I haven't looked into how it works when the man is poz and the woman is neg. I had no idea ...

Thanks so much for your replies. Any information I can find is welcome. I have a specialist here that is an expert on peri-natal transmission. She seems to be ok with me starting medication anytime between 14-20 weeks --  I was just curious if anybody else had been in the same situation.

Thanks snowangel -- :)
