Latino-Jewish urban collective Hip Hop Hoodíos have seen a surprisingly strong debut for their new digital-only ‘Viva la Guantanamera EP’ (Nacional Records). In its first week of release, the album debuted in the Top 10 of iTunes Latino’s Top 100 Albums Sales chart (ahead of platinum-selling acts like Shakira and Enrique Iglesias) and also hit #1 on eMusic, the second largest digital service. Hip Hop Hoodíos were also recently profiled on Public Radio International’s nationally syndicated program The World: http://www.theworld.org/audio/08132007.mp3

The post-ethnic merrymakers in Hip Hop Hoodíos are donating 18% of net profits from digital sales of the “Viva la Guantanamera” single to Amnesty International’s efforts to close Guantanamo Bay Prison and encourage the full restoration of due process.

"Music has an infectious quality, particularly a song as joyous and entertaining as Viva la Guantanamera,” says Larry Cox, Amnesty International USA’s Executive Director. “It is our hope that this song will inspire action against the continued human rights abuses carried out at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, where for more than 5 years now, individuals have been held without charge, without trial and without end. "

The “Viva la Guantanamera” single was produced by Wildog of Ozomatli, and is a veritable Latino-Jewish “We are the World”; joining Hip Hop Hoodíos as guests on the track are Wildog, Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg of recent Grammy winners The Klezmatics, Kemo the Blaxican of Latin hip hop pioneers Delinquent Habits, and instrumentalists Walter Miranda (Beastie Boys, Plastilina Mosh) and Chris Washburne (The Syotos Band, Tito Puente).

Amnesty International has initially committed to inclusion of the new Hip Hop Hoodíos track “Viva La Guantanamera” on multiple Amnesty and Amnesty-related websites including AmnestyUSA.org, MusicForHumanRights.org, and TearItDown.org. Also featured on the ‘Viva la Guantanamera EP’ are remixes of tracks from Hip Hop Hoodios’ previous album ‘Agua pa’ La Gente.’ DJ Niño of Barcelona-based electronic sensations The Pinker Tones puts a dancefloor-friendly spin on the track “Agua pa’ la Gente”, while Hector Coulon a.k.a Leo Sidran (producer of Jorge Drexler’s Oscar-winning “Al Otro Lado del Rio”) recasts “1492” with spacey jazz bass. Also included on the mini-album is a shiny new mix of fan favorite “Havana Nagila” from the forthcoming V2 France release ‘Nu Jewish Musique’.

What great news Andy and congrats to Abe!!! My dinosaur p.c. at home didn't take the download of Quick player so I will try to listen at work if I get a spare few moments. My old roommate Les introduced me to Klezmer music and I probably have some old albums and tapes that are collecters items...I will someday have to go thorugh my inventory I still have from Les...Some of it was terrific and the combo of Latin and traditonal Jewish music is a wonderful concept!!!
