Memorial Service (update so far)
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:34:56 pm »
Hi everyone

I was just wondering if you wanted us to have another AIDSmeds memorial service this year in SF..if so then please let me know so I can start planning something and get in touch with the people who run the "Circle of friends" at the memorial gardens.

I have some information already and they are very open about us having our own private service, I just need to let them know in case there is anything they can help us out with.

Please let me know your thoughts on this so I can get the ball rolling...it will only be a very simple service but if anyone has any thoughts or ideas please don't hesitate in letting me know...but we really do need to keep it as simple as we can...mainly because it is out doors.

Thanks.
Hugs

the 'memorial' service is one of the best parts of the amg... for new and old alike.

It doesn't matter how big or how small, just that it happens and reminds each of us why we came together in the first place.

Toronto's was smallish.. Montreal was larger and more organized... each made me cry.

I don't think this group can really go without having this as an 'event' there.

I think another memorial service would be great.  Assuming we make it to S.F, you can count on us being there.  Thanks, Jan.

I haven't been to an AMG (yet), but it strikes me as a signature event as well.  It's one thing I would absolutely make a point to attend at an AMG.

Of course I'll be there.  The Grove really is beautiful and is part of Golden Gate Park which is a natural wonder with everything from windmills to buffalo.  Stretching from "The Haight" (Haight Ashbury) to the ocean.

MIchael and I used to live on Stanyan St. (as in Stanyan St. and other Sorrows, by Rod Mckuen), just across the street from the Grove.  But that was in the early 80's, long before the grove had anything to do with AIDS.

Jan, you don't need to work on this by yourself.  If you need some help, please let me know.

I would be honored to attend.  Thanks for all the work that went into it the past 2 years to Jan and all others who worked so hard to make it so meaningful.

Jan:

I really hope we have another memorial service.

I can't imagine an AMG without it.  Like Dingo said, it reminds each of us why we are together in the first place.

I also can't imagine a more perfect setting (see below), the "circle of friends" couldn't be more appropriate, and I'm confident our common bond will make this something we all remember.

Thank you for giving so much of yourself again this year.  If I can help in anyway, you know I will.

I know you said you wanted to keep the visit to the Aids Memorial Grove simple, but what about having the Mormon Tabernacle Choir fly in to serenade us?   ;D

Even without  an organized memorial service, a visit to the AIDS Memorial Grove would be a powerful experience. The grove is a beautiful and serene place that invites wandering around and quiet reflection. The centerpiece of the memorial is a spiral constructed of paving stones, each with the name of a person who has died of AIDS. Many of the names will be recognizable to everyone. Throughout the grove there are individual memorials donated by friends and family.

The arboretum in Golden Gate Park is very beautiful area that is not too far from the Memorial Grove. Many of the benches in the arboretum have memorial plaques. From the dates of birth and death on these plaques, it is clear that many are for people who died of AIDS. I think of this place as a kind of extension of the Memorial Grove.

I don't think a gathering would be complete without a memorial. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything.....just coming together in a moment of time to remember our fallen is powerful enough. I haven't ever had the same feeling of fellowship that we all shared in Motreal.
Looking forward to it.

Hi everyone

Thanks for your input so far.

Rab, Robert and Dennis thank you all for your offers of help I will certainly call on you if I encounter any problems along the way.

Allan I have looked around the site of the memorial gardens and it looks just beautiful and if some of those who are going to the AMG and would like to just look around on their own that will be fine, but the AMG memorial service has become a big part of the gatherings for us all as a group and I hope that most will join us on this special occasion.

I have a simple idea floating around my head but may have to leave it until I get to SF, I plan on getting there a few days prior to the main group so I can put the idea into action, there are a couple of things that can only be organized when I get there, so please trust me and bare with me if I don't give you all the details before the gathering..but what I will need is the number of those who will be attending..so please let me know for sure before I get to SF..no rush we still have 4.5 months.. ;)

Love and hugs
Jan :-*

P.S...The Morman Tabernacle choir were already booked ...sorry Rab.. ;)

Hi everyone

Just thought I would let you know that Allan (bless his heart) has spoken to the people at the Memorial Grove and they have reserved us the time at the the Circle of Friends for Friday the 14th at 11am.

I still can't give you anymore details at the moment regarding the service it's self but please just bear with me, I may not be able to explain how we are going to run the servise until the actual day, there are some things I need to do and can only do them while I'm in SF.

Nearer the time however I will need numbers of those who will be attending the service,  so I will need everyone to help me out by letting me know the exact numbers, I would hate anyone to miss out.

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Hugs

Dear Jan,

I will be happy to participate. When my friend Charlie died, we tied notes to helium balloons to say our farewells. Have the best day
