para,

It all depends. What sort of incident prompted you to test? You may not need further testing at all, or you may simply need to confirm your negative result at three months. Six month testing is totally unnecessary.

As the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, I would not expect your result to change - provided of course you had an actual risk in the first place. If you did not have an actual risk, your result will NOT change at all, no matter how many times you test.

If you give us a better idea of what's going on, we can give you a more specific answer.

well i wasnt thinking and had unprotected sex 8 weeks ago. i had a test done at 3 1/2 weeks, ( which came negative) then realized that i might have taken it too soon, which was why i recenlty got tested again. ive never had unprotected sex before, and im not sure if the risk is lower if he didnt finish inside of me.. he said he was tested and was ok, but obviously im going to get tested anyways..

Para,

You're absolutely right to test - you can NEVER go by what a person says about their status unless you've tested together with them.

You do need to confirm your negative result at three months, but I do not expect your result to change for the reason I stated above. You will not need to re-test at six months; three months is conclusive.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence. Please also check out the information on the female condom as it is a method of protection YOU can control. And don't be afraid to carry condoms in your handbag - far from saying to the world that you're "easy", it says you care about yourself and your partners too.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

para,

It's a high enough risk and one you should not take. I don't want you thinking you'll be ok if you have the guy pull out - precum is also infectious.

However, it's pretty much a certainty you got away with it this time. Please, don't let there be a next time, ok?

Just make sure you get that three month confirmation, but don't sweat it in the meantime. I've yet to see an eight week negative turn positive at the three month mark.
