Title: Miss P's Annual Snowfall Thread
Post by: Miss Philicia on October 27, 2011, 02:51:36 pm
... and so it begins. I really can't believe that we will get 3-6" of snow before Halloween. I don't think that's happened my entire life living anywhere between DC and NYC.

You'll love Boston in the snow <snicker>!!  I lived there for 3 years and worked there for about 8 -- nothing like it.  If you think Boston drivers are something -- wait till you see them drive in the snow!!

Of course, a stroll through the Commons is actually quite nice -- you can go skating at Frog Pond.

Wow, NOAA has upped the potential totals in a band from Reading, PA to Allentown, PA of 6-10".  Those places are a mere 60 miles northwest of me. When I went to bed last night it was only saying 4-6" up there. For perspective the most that has fallen in that area this early in the year is a bit over 2".

I think I'll just get rain though, but the weather channel is still saying 3-5"

I hear ya Mike.  You know being that I've lived in Miami all my life I really don't see a problem wiith the way they drive here.  In my opinion they know how to drive, and my aggressive style helps. lol

It did not snow where I'm located, it's just cold (42 degrees).  A beautiful day though, nice blue sky with crisp air.  This I can do.  It's that stuff that will be coming shortly that scares me. :o  The wife and I are one of the few tenants who opted to pay an extra $50 a month for covered parking.  It's paying off already because this morning  I noticed all the cars in the parking lot had windows covered with ice, but when I got to mine it was clean as a whistle.  (whew)

Uhhh, remember when I had that episode in April?  Well when they checked me into the facility I was weighing 117 lbs, I'm 5' 9".   Right now I weigh 160 lbs and have been working out since June. ;D

I look so good my wife bought me a new wedding ring.  I had lost my other one while mowing the yard about 2 years ago.

Sorry to hear about the cold snowy/rainy dreary weather you all are getting Ms. P.

But glad that it makes an even better excuse for you to stay in and rest your foot some more.

We have been around 85 and humid here in Miami - A/C day in the car today.

It's supposed to get stormy tonight -with rain all weekend due to the remnants of Hurricane Rena - now a tropical depression.

I leave for DC next Sunday for a week - and while I LOVE D.C. - I am not looking forward to going from 80-85 degrees here to 45-55 degrees there --- I am packing the heavy coat (and may even take gloves).  I get cold and shiver when it gets below 67.

Jan - what does your temperature translate into in Fahrenheit?  I suppose I could look it up --- LOL.

NOAA just upgraded NYC in a major way for full Winter Storm Warning and possible 10" totals. Previously the warnings were just north of the city and NYC was only going to get a small amount. Delays at Newark Airport are already at 8 hours.

Philadelphia is somehow escaping the worst of this.

I remember one Halloween when we had a blizzard in the Cleveland area and my mother wouldn't let my sister and me go out trick-or-treating. I was so upset (threw a tantrum) that my mother finally gave me an early birthday present just to shut me up (bd is Nov. 4th). I think I must have been around five, so that would have been 1967 or thereabouts. It always seemed that the first snow in NE Ohio usually came within a few days of my birthday, but that's the only time I remember it happening on Halloween.

Since it doesnt snow down here I feel it only fair that I be allowed to post rainfall amounts....thus I would like to report that we received 1.5 inches yesterday morning. It was such an event that they pre-empted the Today show for nonstop coverage of the rain, including live shots of puddles.(seriously)

@ Theyer - its a Frozen margarits with a Dos Equis beer turned up in it. I really doubt you can be any closer to heaven then you are while drinking one .

They really should have never used Global Warming and instead used Global Climate Change.  They are starting to use that term more, however.  Most Americans think if it rains a lot or snows a lot and earlier, that means global warming could not be real.  I still think polls show the majority of Americans don't believe its real, just like they don't believe in evolution.  Have the polls changed?

And, most don't think the 1-2 degree worldwide temp increase makes much difference.  More heat equals more moisture in the air.  Less arctic ice deflects less sunlight back into space and less ice doesn't provide the world's natural air-conditioner as winds blow over them.  Even I can understand that.  And, yes, some places like Texas will see the opposite of severe drought, because God hates them for the gay mayor in Houston.

I agree. In Switzerland the difference between the terms is starting to get expressed.  There will be both, of course.

But global warming does not mean it will get warmer in any one place.  There is that theory that Europe may get colder if Global Warming shifts the Gulf Stream.

Im coming to the states for Xmas and sure would love a white one in upstate NY.

Snow in New York City is always fun, but really the MOST fun if it is huge dumps of snow, so you have the surreal piles and deep ponds and just a new reality of navigation for a few days.  Green Wellies are the ticket.  And a flask of whisky. Also the snow muffles noise and generally creates a wonderland atmosphere for at least a sparkling moment.

I've just received my official long range forecast and it states that "We still believe cities like Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City will have a White Christmas this year"... good thing I'm flying to North Carolina on the 23rd. 8)

I also just read that "It's possible that 60% of the country could have snow cover by Dec 15."

November has been totally mild this year, not that I've been able to enjoy it with my fucking foot full of infected incisions oozing puss and blood.

Are you still boozing oozing?

I rarely drink alone at home -- I have a bottle of premium vodka in my freezer and it's at least 3 years old, and 80% full. However, when winter weather arrives I do enjoy a nice bar setting (http://www.thefranklinbar.com/) with a well made Makers Mark Manhattan (up). However, the trend this year is towards elaborate boozy "punch" drinks... everyone has gone ga ga for Lairds Bonded Applejack and specialty bitters.

As far as oozing, no my foot is on the mend however slowly.

Now do you care to discuss snowfall or did you just come here to hijack a thread?
Title: Re: Miss P's Annual Snowfall Thread
Post by: Ann on December 01, 2011, 12:29:51 pm
Me? Hijack? Perish the thought!

I don't booze at home either, but I keep a bottle of Highland Poacher in the cupboard for when mates are over and fancy a nip.

Glad to hear you stopped oozing. Yick.

We haven't had any snow here yet this year, but it really smelled like snow earlier today. You know, that really crisp, clean smell. Almost as nice as a freshly mown lawn or spring.

The weather has been atrocious lately here with high winds and loads of rain. The local fishing boats have been blown in for two weeks now and that's not much use for them, what with the holidays coming up and all. The Eastern Europeans who work in the fishyards aren't amused either - they all like to go home for the holidays and it's going to be a struggle this year for some of them if the boats don't get back out to sea soon.

I used to train for long-distance running competitions in Upstate New York and Quebec. We would slather our faces with vaseline.  The face mask would freeze over quickly.  Then the other clothes that didn't move much with the articulations would freeze solid from the vapor.  This was before all the high-tech fabric.

Also we drank a lot.  But you didn't walk home alone, drunk, too dangerous.

Living, exercising, just moving daily in extreme cold is a fantastic sensual experience, however.  But maybe best for the young and strong?

I used to laugh when I arrived in class. After my face unfroze, that is.

Of course, there are days like this in NYC, too.  Shocking cold!!!  One time a rich bf from a warmish country took pity and gave me a superb artic expedition down parka, which I still have 25 years later.  If you have the right equipment, cold is bearable and even fun.  There were days I wore ski pants just out and about in NYC.  Flannel lined jeans are good, too.

If there is sun, I love bitter cold.

I absolutely hate the cold.  So why do I live in northcentral Indiana? Because I can't afford to move and my sister in Phoenix probably wouldn't support me. :P

I don't know that we have winters quite as severe as the East coast, but we gets tons of snow and extreme cold.  We're supposed to start getting snow tomorrow and it's supposed to last for two days.  We've been fortunate so far, Novemeber was quite a mild month.  However, winter is coming, and I'm sure it will hit with force.

Wimp. It's only 52F in my kitchen, 51F upstairs and 59F in my living room at the moment. (I have digital clocks that also give the room temp) I think it's around 49/50 outside, maybe a bit colder. I guess I should count my blessings though - there's no mist today, inside or out. ;D

It's currently 5 degrees warmer where I am than where Wumpmeister lives, and will top out at 63℉. However, there's the slight chance for a small amount of snow Thursday night.

Also, check out how folks can't drive in the UK (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2069801/UK-snow-Britain-braced-white-Christmas.html?ito=feeds-newsxml) with a measly dusting of white stuff. Pathetic.

Well, you got that right. I couldn't believe how bad they are in the snow. When I took driving lessons, four of us were taken to a big parking lot early on a Sunday morning before it was ploughed so we could learn how to handle a car in a few inches of snow and icy conditions. That lesson served me well over the years. It was good fun too!

The Brits aren't that good in snow mainly because they rarely get to practice. They're better in northern Scotland where they do get snow more than once or twice a year.

Oh, and I checked the local weather - it's colder outside than I realised. It's only 43F (6C). No wonder it's so cold in the parts of the house I'm not heating at the moment! (Damn recession)

Well none us here is really sure just where Wumpmeister lives, are even his true legal-age for that matter  ;D

We're just having more of the same (http://www.manx.net/weather) wet, windy weather we've been having for the last three or four weeks. The only difference is that it's effin' COLD! With the strong winds we've been having it feels a lot colder than it is, particularly when you're getting pelted in the face with rain. >:( I'd MUCH rather have snow and wind than rain and wind.

I feel sorry for the people in the fishing industry - the boats have only been out a handful of days in nearly a month. We normally don't get this much wind until January/February. It's tough on them when it comes before the holidays.

Trust. There's no way I'd ever confuse La Wumpette owning a fussy white colonial like Ford has, with the equally fussy poodle.

ps: it's snowing currently in the northeastern corner of Mississippi... meanwhile in Philly it's +60℉, 20 degrees warmer than New Orleans. 6 degrees warner than San Diego. Very strange for early December. Just three counties northwest of me (Poconos) there's a winter storm warning for 7" of snow.

It's still cold here (low to mid 40s) but it looks like it will be getting colder tomorrow, with snow predicted over the hills.

It's still blowing a hoolie as well. Tonight they're giving westerlies with gusts up to 60mph, but I'm sure the wind is stronger than that. It sounds like a freight train at the moment.

The constant wind isn't just pissing off people in the fishing industry any more - it's pissing everyone off now because the shelves are becoming increasingly bare in the grocery stores, aside from local produce. (most goods are shipped in, not flown in) >:(

Oh please -- can you imagine "wheelie bins" blowing down Broad Street here in Killadelphia during a wind storm and hitting lanes of oncoming taxi cabs and city buses? That's why we have to use just the bags. I live on one of the busiest streets in the city.
Title: Re: Miss P's Annual Snowfall Thread

Ha. We've been having gusts up to 100mph the past couple days. It's blowing a hoolie right now aamof. It's getting rather tedious - I damn near got blown over yesterday on my way back from the chemist.

Wheelie bins do not live on the street. They live in your front or back garden in a sheltered spot or in a garage, if you have one. They only hang out in the street on bin day when they're full and if it's blowing when the binmen empty them, they lie them over on their side so they don't take flight.

It ain't rocket science. (http://i933.photobucket.com/albums/ad174/dash1293_2010/Emoticons/014.gif)

The locals, meaning specifically South Philadelphia (not the entire city), think it's just peachy. Evidently every time the city has wanted to put in a landscaped center the community board, which probably consists of a dozen crusty old Italian men, fights it. Anyway, it's a very dense neighborhood and it's not easy to find parking.

ps: 2011 was officially the wettest year on record for Filthydelphia.

OK, I don't remember ever seeing this happen. We're having a 24 hour high wind event today, but the temperature is about 40℉. Yet we're having a a thick snow squall that is obliterating the skyline a mile from me, and the snow is actually "lake effect snow" from the Great Lakes 400 miles away.

Yet on radar it's showing it as rain and only as snow maybe 200 miles west of here.

edit: major wow factor -- that lasted for a total of 5-10 minutes and now magically it's disappeared and it's completely sunny.

The first time I experienced lake effect snow I thought I was tripping . It was a beautiful spring day in Chicago with blue Sky's and I couldn't get it through my southern bred brain why it was sunny and snowing really hard . I stood looking at the sky and it finally hit me it had to be coming off lake Michigan .

hehehe... I like that; "high wind event". I'll have to remember that phrase next time it's blowing a hoolie here on the Rock. (which will probably be next week sometime) I also rather like the local colloquialism "blowing a hoolie", but "high wind event" sounds so 21st century. :)

The wind was blowing so hard the other evening that when I walked home from the grocery over the road, I had to bend forward and my arms (and shopping bags) were blown way out behind me. On the way there, the wind was behind me and I nearly got blown out into the street (while waiting to cross) into the path of an oncoming Land Rover. whew!

That happened here last week. When I went into a local second-hand bookshop, the sun was shining. Within ten minutes there was a huge crack of thunder (rare here) and you couldn't see across the street for hail and snow - big fat flakes. About fifteen minutes after this started the sun was shining again. Weird. Even for weather on the Rock.

As several consecutive days of +70℉ arrive locally in three days and tonight's low of 32℉ is most likely the last for this season, this will conclude my annual snowfall thread:

source (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=ICAO:KPHL&almanac=1)

Philadelphia snowfall this season: 4.0"
Philadelphia normal snowfall:  20.3"
Philadelphia record snowfall: 78.7" (2009-2010 season)

I'd like to thank conservatards for denying global climate change.

Happy last day of Winter everyone!

so what were the total snow tallies?

San Antonio - Zero inches.

btw, It is fixing to give it to us here in Texas. We ahve a cold front colliding with the warm humid Gulf air and storms are developing. We are expecting High wind, large hail and several inches of rain. Our weatherman said there is 101% chance of at least 1 tornado in our viewing area (of course tornados are weekly occurences here). I'm all battened down with the Benz in the garage and a frozen lasagna in the oven. ;)

Noodles and blow jobs.  What more could a queen ask for, other than a few more inches  :P

PS: not a stitch of snow fell here in NYC either because us real new yorkers don't count dustings.

Are you OK, Wumpy? It looks like all of the fast food drive throughs were destroyed by the wrath of God last night (http://abcnews.go.com/US/tornado-hits-san-antonio-severe-weather-rattles-south/story?id=15959264#.T2iQXvRSRSU) in your area.

Yes, the big guy did smite a few of us Texans last night, but being the good christian that I am the tornado stayed well away from me.

It was quite an impressive storm, one of those turn out all the lights and open a couple windows and just take in all the thunder and lightning.

But jsut in case I made sure my Tornado closet was ready for me .

btw, on Thursday we will have abnormally high temperatures of +80 degrees. A normal high this time of year is 55.

And as far as mobile homes go, I've actually only been in one once in my entire life. But then again I expect most of you have never spent the night in a project/public housing in the South Bronx.

Can you believe we're having a blast of Arctic air today and that the wind chill factor will go down to 20F tonight (actual temps of 29F with a NOAA freeze warning)?

At least it's not going to snow like it did in Southern California last night.

Where did winter go? I didnt even get to wear all my sweaters. I can tell its going to be a barn burner again this summer. It's getting hot here already. Mid-80's.

Maybe I will relocate to Hawaii, isnt it 78 there year round?
