Ice Cream Sandwiches
« on: May 05, 2007, 02:38:55 am »
So, I was watching SG-1, and I was overcome with the most desirous appetite, that I had no choice but to go to Safeway.  Anyway...

I got there, and I couldn't decide on pancakes or a 12 pack of ice-cream sandwiches.  So, I got a cookie from the bakery, and ate it as I decided I could not live without either of my selections.

Then, I went to the supermarket check-out, and there were two people in the line next to me telling me that the lane wasn't open.  They were totally aware that I wasn't aware.  No sooner did they tell me this, a request went out for a check-out person at the empty, vacant stand where I was waiting.  The line quickly formed.

The guy behind me said how did you know?

have no idea...   THIS is the very inconsequential precognition bullshit that I wish I could rely on.  I know things, often, without aide of any of the known senses, but usually it's that someone's wearing a mismatched sock, or something equally as unintelligent.

But, I've eaten 3 of the ice cream sandwiches already, and I offered one to the man walking towards me on the street, but he didn't seem interested.

What the hell is an ice-cream sandwich  ???

I ALWAYS choose the line which will have a problem: the lady is writing a check and takes 10 minutes to get it right, or there is this guy with three thousand coupons, or someone got something that has no price on it  >:(

It's a little taste of heaven is what it is!  You've never heard of an ice cream sandwich?  Time to call on those high-level googling abilities of yours, milker.

Lord, Joseph....you sound like one of the Mystery Men with that psychic ability of yours.  Kind of like the "super hero" who can turn invisible- but it can only happen if no one is looking.

I *LOVE* ice cream sandwiches.  When I was a little kid and we'd make the 4 hour car trip down to Gran Gran's farm on the VA-NC border as soon as we arrived she'd prop me up on this ancient wood stool in her large kitchen, open up her humongous freezer, and present me with an ice cream sandwich.  This went on for as long as I remember.

Ok I just checked. What's interesting is that the wikipedia entries for "ice cream sandwich" are only in english and spanish, no other country :D

I'll have to try that.

Joseph I should call you everytime I have to choose a checkout line. Are you related to Miss Cleo  :D

Ha!  Was it one of those old freezers that opened at the top?  From my childhood experience, those appliances were always good news.  They always had something delicious to deliver.

Oh yes, it opened from the top.  It was like a huge deep freeze coffin.  And Gran Gran had some weird system in there and she did NOT like anyone going into the freezer other than herself.  She probably hid money in it or something.  When we had to move her into a rest home and sell the farm my mother found wads of cash all over the place, stashed in socks, etc.  I think Gran Gran still believe the Depression would return at any moment.

I also enjoy Ice Cream Sandwiches... But now that I'm eating healthy, try to make them with whole wheat bread... I eat them fast so the bread doesn't get soggy.

Joseph my friend, I'm going to call my friend Dionne Warwick and maybe she can use your abilities... Let me give her a call...
Ok... ringing, ringing, ringing... No one answers... Damn she probably knows it's me calling, she is good!!!

I'm going to my local Safeway this afternoon, I wonder if you could send some check out clearance up north for me. Before I start my shopping I can always put the basket over my head, like an antenna to capture your "gift", maybe that will work better.

Please advise if you need my GPS coordinates... or if you can just do it using my photo... Ahhh just in case you visualise me from above (out of body like), my hair is thinning on top...

Thanks,
Mauricio.

Oh, yes....those huge old freezers were the deal.  We weren't allowed to get into them w/o the grown ups around either.  We were, however, able to reach in just to scrape some of the ice off the sides to rub on when we were out riding our bicycles around in the hot summer sun.

I think the story was pretty much the same with all the folks who lived through that Depression era.  They were notorious for stashing cash all over the place...as well as canning and freezing anything they could.  Seems like they were always making provisions.

Oh yes, Gran Gran's canning skills were legendary!  I so very much miss her canned tomatoes which I would use to make pasta sauce (she passed away 2 years ago at the ripe age of 100!).  And of course there were copious amounts of canned green beans, which I detested but EVERYONE down there lived for hers.  I just hate that typical Southern style mushy vegetables... ick.  To this day I don't eat green beans.  They're just atrocious.

I could go on and on about her food though... stuff like pickled peaches (simply THE BEST) and pickled watermelon rind.  She also used to make something called "Big Biscuit" which was basically taking all the biscuit dough and placing it in one lump in a cast iron skillet and baking it.  Then you would slice it like a pie and serve with large amounts of fresh honey -- divine.

Ah, heck....this is all taking me to memory lanes.  I'm gonna need to start a new thread or something.

But suffice it for now to say:  I know of thes Big Biscuits of which you speak.  That must be a Deep South thing.

Oh... wow. My dad worked for Bordens dairy back when I was a widdle kid. And Bordens brand ice cream sands were the best!!! I cant find them anymore. Nothing tastes even close. Dont even know if Bordens is still in business...?
But back then every summer bordens had their company picnic in some park. And they brought in huge boxes of all their ice cream products, on dry ice, for the event. And... my dad always stayed to help clean up after and always got to bring home the left over ice cream sands. We had 20 or 30 packed in the freezer, many times, after a company picnic. So that sure made the summer time a lot more fun, knowing all that ice cream was in my freezer waiting for me. Those WERE the days...

Edy's Ice cream has an Ice Cream Sandwich flavor. It is really good. It tastes just like them, just sort of mushed up.
