Flu question
« on: January 10, 2013, 01:13:47 pm »
I'm on day 6 of the flu but on the mend i think. Four days of fever and and now just weak, coughing and congested.  I did have my shot in October. I've got two questions. First, do you find that it takes longer to get well after the flu or a cold?  Second and more importantly, what criteria do you use to decide that you're sick enough to go to the doctor?

I've been wondering the same thing. This is my first time dealing with this all. I can't decide if it's the flu side effects from my medications.

The flu hits pretty sudden.  one day you are feeling ok and the next you feel like someone beat you with a 2x4.  It really depends on your overall symptoms, some folks only get mild symptoms while others get it more severe including severe dehydration, high fever, malaise.

the flu itself takes about 7 days to complete its course beginnning with your first symptoms.  they are telling folks here to call your primary care doctor when you first start feeling symptoms because they can prescribe you tamiflu which shortens the time and symptoms.

if your doctor suspects it is the flu, they can run a little test to verify.

The flu will usually hit you harder than a cold. A really bad cold it's said, will take a week coming on, you have it for a week and another week to finally get rid of the symptoms.  I haven't had the flu in a long time and I never really know when something is the flu or a cold.  Lately whenever I start getting cold symptoms I take a once a day pill like Allergra, Zyrtec or Claritin and it clears up.  I don't go to the doctors for a cold or flu, I just let it run it's course and take meds to lessen the symptoms.
Pray God you can cope
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

And you call yourselves AIDS victims?

You're a bunch of soft cocks who are a disgrace to the Red Ribbon. >:(

If you're able to use the interpr0nz, you don't have the 'flu. You've probably got lace on your knickers but you certainly don't have the 'flu.

AND EVEN IF YOU DO HAVE THE 'FLU you shouldn't be whining. You should be grateful you're still reactive enough to feel ill.

Hang your heads in shame:

When i get the flu it takes ages to get rid [with no meds]. Because i'm a smoker i always get chest infections. So when i start coughing up green stuff i go to the doctor to be put on antibiotics. After taking my 1st dosage, the flu symptoms starts decrease within 24 hours but the cough could persist for up to 2 weeks [sometimes even longer] coz of the smoking.

Living in the UK i'm used to get the flu [2/3 times a year] but i try to get to the doctor within 2/3 days of it starting so it doesn't get any worst.
When someone gets the flu in my house i'm always the last one to get it but it hits me harder then everyone else.

I took the flu jab for the 1st time since i'm poz [i've been poz for over 15 years] late 2011 and it worked great, no flu during the winter for the first time in years. Last year, before the winter started, i thought about taking the flu jab again but in the meantime everyone here has had the flu [some have had it a couple of times] and i didn't get it, so i didn't take it. I might still have residue of the flu jab in me otherwise i'd have got it. Also, not having the flu jab every year will probably decrease the immunity to it in the following years [personal opinion]. I say that coz my mum [poz negative but diabetic] had the jab every year for the past 5/6 years and it worked OK for the first few years but this winter she's already had flu twice even though she got the flu jab in November.

9 out of 10 times when i get a and sore throat i get the first flu symptoms within 12 to 24 hours after that. It's my [and probably a lot of people's] way of predicting it.

What you've described in this post is not the 'flu.

It's a cold. Or at best bronchitis.

Just because you're a poof living in a shitty country like the UK doesn't give you the right to call a cold the 'flu.

Deal with it.

Seriously. I have had the flu. Not in the last few years, thank Gods.

It is a week AT LEAST in a bed or a hospital. It is absolutely incapacitating. High fevers that seem unending, whole body aches, no appetite, barely energy to crawl to the bathroom.

I agree with Matty. What was described was a cold, maybe bronchitis. NOT THE FLU. The fact that antibiotics helped is a red flag, of course.

Hell, it didn't even seem like a terribly bad cold.

Maybe i didn't explain myself well enough.

[When] I get the flu, after 2/3 days the cough develop into chest infections [also coz of heavy smoking].

One of most common complication of flu is a bacterial chest infection.

But if cold symptoms are body aching, lack of energy, sore throat, headaches, watery eyes, cough, [sometimes] diarrhea.... then OK, its a cold.

redrobot, what they're saying is that it isn't the flu in the first place. You're just getting bronchitis -- which isn't a great description anyway, call it an "respiratory chest infection" because bronchitis is one of many such things: upper, lower, bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, etc.

And yes, of course smoking makes it worse -- my advice is either to quit for the duration of the illness when it's acute or definitely cut back to a minimal amount daily.

If you catch those things up above they can easily be treated with over-the-counter medications.

But it's also true that the flu can develop into a cough after the "fever" state and if one isn't careful and it goes on too long it cold become something like pneumonia, then I would see a doctor.

Natty the damned, true it sounds like he doesn't have the flu but rather a cold with conplications, but kindly do not call my country shitty. There's really no need.

To answer the original question, Ive only had the flu once in my life (really flu as opposed to a cold) and it knocked me for 6 for at least a week. I don't think we called the doctor but rather just lay (hallucinating and sweating) in bed for 10 days.

ABC News reported tonight that almost 70 million Americans believe the vaccine can cause the flu.  Not often surprised by American beliefs, but that's a big number.  Their doc reporter gives the facts.  They showed an interesting animation that anyone should be able to understand.

That's weird, because my mum [as i said in my other comments] takes the flu jab every year and she always gets the flu not long after. Having said that, she wouldn't catch it again for the rest of the year. This winter [after 5/6 years taking it], the flu jab didn't do anything at all. She's already been ill twice.

I, on the other hand, took it for the first time in the winter of 2011 and haven't been ill since. I didn't take it this winter.

Confusing.

The flu jab doesn't protect against all flu strains, only the one which is thought most likely to be around that winter. So you can still get the flu after the jab, I'm sure this leads some people to think that it can cause flu - which it cannot. It gave me one hell of a sore arm though.

I believe, if you didn't take this years shot, you missed the "60% protection".  If you haven't got the flu this year, I don't think its holdover from last year's shot, my dear.  Just luck.

What you've described in this post is not the 'flu.

It's a cold. Or at best bronchitis.

It's bronchitis. Actually there are many types of upper respiratory infections that get labeled as bronchitis. Indeed smoking like a chimney while you have it makes it take weeks to get rid of.

On a personal note, as someone that's gotten this annually since I was a child as soon as you feel it coming on, and before all of the vile fluids fill up your lungs, buy something like Mucinex (in the US) or a product containing Guaifenesin, an expectorant that loosens mucus in your lungs, and Dextromethorphan which controls the cough. There's also a form that has Pseudoephedrine in place of the Dextro if you also have nasal issues.

That'll learn you not to wait until January to get a flu shot. You should have done that back in October.

Well Ms. P. since I am not sure of your mention intention (exoctically flavored snark perhaps?), my comment confirms that I have "not gotten sick with the flu".

On a side note and as I have mentioned before, child you so much remind me of my late cousin. He could work your last nerve and make you want to hug him at the same time.  Amazing.  ;)

Now, there's a good chance I read that wrong, from the other thread.  I've been known to do that.

It's a web forum full of people of questionable intelligence. Why should I waste my very precious time proofing everything I write? That would cut my +20,000 post count in half.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

Well Ms. P. since I am not sure of your mention intention (exoctically flavored snark perhaps?), my comment confirms that I have "not gotten sick with the flu".

My intention was quite clear and direct -- you've had the AIDS bug for several decades and should know by now the routine of getting a prompt, annual flu shot in either October or November. You can make all of the excuses that you wish to, but I will remind you that this will only serve to make you look foolish in the most public of manners.

And the "but I didn't get the flu" thingie -- Barbara please. Now that's just sad.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Why Ms. P. bless your stellar little heart (and I typed that after lightly sedating my fingers so that they do not type a fierce word rip in response to your post with the word "foolish" inserted to as character trait for me which, by the way, is quite alien and does not reside in my personal sphere.).

The empirical evidence points to my doing well and being here to type the tale about getting the flu shot precisely and in large part due to my attention to my health over the decades.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, what time will you be ready to make your grand entrance at the Inaugural Ball festivities tonight?  :D

Got better things to do with my time than to memorise internet memes.

Yes, I realize how much time you spend down at the pub playing darts and throwing back those pints.

It's not darts, it's pool, you fool. I'm crap at darts and you wouldn't want to be the person up at the board keeping score when it's my turn to throw. ;D

I only get to the pub about once a week these days - and I don't drink pints anyway. Money's tight and so am I. (and no, I don't drink in the house)
