Serodiscordant Couples - testing for the negative partner
« on: June 11, 2010, 01:21:19 am »
How often is normal to test for HIV?  I've been dating a negative guy for just over 5 months now.  He couldn't have reacted any better to my disclosure and has been a complete blessing.  Anyway, I'm undetectable, and we always practice safe sex, with me as bottom 90% of the time, so I know we aren't putting him at much risk.  But  I've been starting to think that he should still get regular HIV tests.  I know when I was negative, and in monogamous relationships, I basically quit getting tested (which just sounds ridiculous to me NOW), but that was always after we both had a few tests to prove we were negative.  Seeing as how I'm HIV-positive, there is *SOME* risk for him, so I think he should get tested.  But I would think going once a month is excessive and would cause him unnecessary worry, but what about every 6?  Every year?  Anyway, does anyone have experience with this?  How often is often enough when you're a neg dating a poz?

Well if you're always practicing safe sex then really there's no real risk of HIV transmission for him. That said, a 12 monthly antibody test for your partner might help bring you peace of mind.

Remember that HIV antibody testing is a matter for your partner. If he doesn't want to do it, then he doesn't have to.

Of course testing would be indicated if the condom broke during anal sex. Also I'm presuming you are in a reliably monogamous relationship.

Hi Justaguy,

my friend (neg) and I (poz) are together since 6 years (5 without meds for me, one year with); we are having sex regularly and practice Safer sex and have no prob. My friend tests every 18 months (he hates it)

I'm trying to get my partner to get tested again.  He performs oral sex on me.  I know that is a very low risk and I have a moderate vl.  We had lots of unprotected anal sex before I knew my status and when I'm sure my vl was much higher after infection.  He didn't get infected then, but I know that is no guarantee and doesn't mean it still can't happen.

He recently had a physical where some of his blood numbers were not in the normal range.  I, of course, started to worry that those numbers were off due to him getting infected.  At this point, I would like to tell him I don't want him to perform oral on me--at least until I'm undetectable on meds.  I just worry I will infect him and I just couldn't deal with that.

Has he been tested already?  I ask, because if he were already poz before meeting you and found out his status while with you, I would think it would cause you a lot of distress thinking you were the one who gave it to him.

Honestly the motto for serodiscordant couples seem to be better safe than sorry.  Even with no/low risk I would want a negative partner of mine to be tested once yearly.  Maybe you could go with him and get tested yourself just to make him feel better?  A Negative result will as matty said put your minds at ease and a positive result is better off being known about early in the process.

I'd say 6 months to once a year since you guys are being safe. You could test every 3 months if you really felt worried. My partner tests twice a year.

I couldn't agree any more.

foolishly, my last partner and I didn't get him tested over the 10 yrs we were together. We found out he was positive when he was hospitalized with non-hodgkins lymphoma and AIDS. If we had gotten him tested any of those years, he could have been treated and still be alive. Instead less than 2 months after his positive diagnosis, he passed away. :'(
