San Francisco forums?
« on: August 28, 2012, 01:10:43 am »
Hi all,

Recently tested positive... wondering if there are any San Francisco-specific forums, either on this site or elsewhere, to which I could be pointed... I would like to ask questions about people's experiences with the various places in the city to access care.

I was referred to this Magic Johnson Health Center/AIDS Healthcare Foundation and I'm already unimpressed with them and haven't even had my first meeting there. So far the only thing I can say for them is that they were walking distance from my testing site and weren't closed when I got my results, so I was able to walk over and set up an appointment right then.

Since then, however, I've been unable to get a call back from them after leaving two voicemails and they don't seem to have anything resembling their own website. Already questioning what level of care I can expect and wondering where else might be better to go.

Thanks for these forums, I've been reading a lot and feeling less alone. In general I have very good social support, mental emotional skillfulness, and know that I'll be able to move through this transition time ok.

I am mainly anxious about accessing care as quickly as possible, as I still have ARS symptoms (mainly swollen lymph nodes and low energy) and would like to get started on staying healthy.

Why would they put my registration meeting off for 2 weeks (and I don't think I even get to see a doctor until after that)!?

you could contact the EBAC (East Bay Aids Clinic) it's in oakland at 3100 Summit Street. there is also the health center in san francisco at duboce and market street. i forget what the name is right now. i think that either one would be able to provide you with information or help. there is also ucsf in san francisco that could be an option. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply... getting lists of places is no problem (the place I tested has them) the problem is knowing what each place is like (pros, cons, experiences, etc).

Welcome to the forums!  I'd also recommend that you check out the Stop AIDS Project.  They're located just north of Market Street in the Duboce area (I think...I get all the areas up there confused).  They have a really awesome two day PLUS seminar specifically geared towards those newly infected.  I found it a huge help to meet with other newbies, talk through our fears & concerns, as well as learn so much about tips for staying healthy and ARV therapy.  I think the seminar is once a month.  I went last year, and I was very grateful for the information I gained.

The link is here:  http://stopaids.org/programs/positive-force

Also, in terms of clinics, you could also check out the Stanford Positive Care Clinic at Stanford University.  Not sure if that would be too terribly convenient if you live in the city itself, but it's a great place if you're in one of the southern suburbs.

Good luck!
